No idea but that was Houston's original offer and they've since raised it

The steroid era was what it was. They didn't do anything about it, so you were stupid if your game depended on power and you didn't use roids.

You forget pitchers used them and benefitted as well.

No way it is what Boras was telling him he was going to get.

I think it's wise to see how the season plays out and wait for the trade deadline with Framber

I get your point, but if I was ever truly and ace pitcher and had the leverage that's exactly they "extra" I'd go for too.

81 road games translates to what, around 40 trips on the road in a season? If I knew for certain I wasn't playing in 10-15 of those road trips, I'd push hard to get those extra days at home with my family.

Selfishly I'm happy since I bought a Framber jersey after the season ended

The Astros could regret not trading Framber, but I believe dealing him now is a definite white flag for the 2025 season.

The rotation has good depth, but Framber (despite that occasional mental breakdown) is the only top of the rotation big game pitcher we have.

Hunter Brown, Spencer Spaghetti, and Ronel Blanco are not going to win many playoff series.

If the season is a disaster, we can ship Framber at the deadline. We'll get less back than we would right now, but someone will give up a pretty good package.

Clearly the Astros want to take advantage of the weak AL West and at least take a shot at 2025 while we retool for 2026+.

Remember in some of those seasons he didn't start pitching until June.

Yep- I said yesterday the market for him wasn't what Boras expected.

Agreed.

Some pundits have said Houston should just go ahead and go all in on a rebuild by trading Framber but you basically are kind of giving up on 2025.

Starting pitching depth is much more important than a single position player, as good as Kyle Tucker is, we got in return for him a guy that could hit just as many home runs even if the OPS numbers aren't quite as strong. So a downgrade, but in terms of impact to our 2024 season probably not as large as many think since Tucker wasn't in the lineup most of it anyways.

A pitcher like Framber isn't nearly as replaceable, and could make your starting pitching for next year extremely elite if some guys continue doing well and we get some of our pitchers back healthy.

Better to see how the season is going and get a trade haul at the deadline if we're clearly out of the division. Maybe the haul isn't quite as good but it shouldn't be a massive drop off since teams in the hunt for competing are more likely to go for it.

Really sucks that Boras may drag this Bregman situation out.

If I'm the Astros, I put my final offer on the table and tell Bregman plainly that the longer he waits the more risk there is that we sign other players and can no longer off your the deal.

Right now we should be heavily pursuing an OF hitter that can get on base, work counts, has some pop, but would be a respectable #5 or #6 in the lineup.

It is ok to wait. The entire league is waiting for the chips to fall, not just the Astros.

Boras or Bregman or the Yankees or the Red Sox or the Astros or Christian Walker or Pete Alonso will balk. Someone will compromise and take a little less or pay a little more.

Once that happens things will accelerate.

If Santander and Walker and Teoscar all sign today and we are still waiting on Bregman then you can panic.

Its just a holding pattern right now.

I wanted him. Nice bye low candidate that could end up in the rotation or back end of the bullpen.

Not sure, but I would bet he spends as much time in Upton as he can during the off season

I regret not realizing until right now you could classify two different very exclusive "neighborhoods" as Lower Upton and Upper Upton.

It's a Paredes Party
Paredes Party isn't bad!

If I was the Astros, that's probably what I would try to get going for the fanbase. The graphics you could make with Paredes Party would be pretty good.

He's gonna have to make some significant improvements because IIRC he struggled mightily and did not look comfortable over there last season.

He was very good against righties. Not so much against lefties.
This is an interesting bit, b/c if the plan is to platoon with Big Jon, then Dezenzo (based on a really small sample) is not the player to do it. On the other hand, there are usually a lot more RHP on the mound, so if you're comfortable with Big Jon on a somewhat regular basis, then I suppose it's fine (and cheap) to rely on Dezenzo vs LHP.

Otherwise, I think you need to try and get someone that is better than both, no matter the pitcher.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I was really hoping they'd move Framber and Pressly for prospects / corner infielders with a little more runway on.

Framber is great when he's on and Machete was behind the plate to calm him down. With Diaz catching him, he gets all bent out of shape, and gives up nukes.

Was really hoping the Pressly to Toronto rumors had some meat to them.

Machete wasn't on the team last year and Framber had one of the best seasons of his career.

On trading Framber now vs the deadline, one advantage now is you can get big league guys. Use the Mets as an example. Maybe we get Megill back as part of the package to fill out our rotation. Well, in August he is likely a key part of their rotation and unavailable. Similar to the Tucker trade, no way you are getting Paredes in August as part of that package. Basically in August you are looking at prospects only.

Is it a foregone conclusion that the Astros won't re-sigh Framber? If Bregman walks, you got to spend that money somewhere.

Also, why didn't they get him on a multi year contract last year?

Would you prefer to maximize the return and punt the 2025 season?

The objective this offseason appears to be to try and improve the immediate future while remaining in contention as a playoff team and division winner.

I realize that, but I also see him melt down and get sideways with Diaz as well. There seems to be little chemistry between the two.
