Cutch can't run for squat anymore but his eye at the plate is amazing. Will be interesting to see how he plays with the ABS

The final roster cut will be interesting this year for sure. There are multiple utility type guys competing for a spot and now McCutchen is added to the mix.

No cost flier. He had a 113 OPS+ last year vs LH, so maybe a platoon option for Joc/Carter. He was still a good overall hitter in 2024.

Pretty good signing. Not expecting him to do anything crazy this season but I think it's good to add a respected veteran voice in the locker room.

His ERA this spring is 43.20 in 3 appearances. Woof.

He has a $1 MM guaranteed contract, so he'll get every opportunity.

Just checked before posting but Thomas was indeed born in Chicago.

A healthy, healthy chunk of these guys playing in the WBC are from the United States or similar country, born and raised, but are playing for another country due to having a grandparent or something similar who is from that country.

WBC eligibility rules are as loose as they get. I mean team Brazil has multiple Japanese guys on it and a Bichette brother lol. And while it's gimmicky as hell, I think it's good for the game to have people from all around the world, and hopefully inspire a few more kids from these countries to pick up a ball and glove.

Joc Pederson went 0 for 3 with a strikeout. So far this spring he's hitting .182 with a .462 OPS.

I'm sticking with my prediction that he'll be gone by the All Star break. Sooner if McCutchen and Canha show they still have something in the tank.

Was just listening to the mid-camp podcast by Evan and Kevin Sherrington. A quote from Evan:

I had the same thought when I saw his pitching line.

DFA watch: Joc Pederson.

spring training stats: .167/.286/.167/.453 - BA/OBP/SLG/OPS

JMO of course, but if McCutchen continues to show he has something left in the tank, I don't see how he isn't a better DH solution than Joc. He's a switch hitter, can actually still play defense at a decent level, and if Canha makes the team, there's your DH platoon. Pederson not being a truly viable defensive replacement hurts his chances if he doesn't really rake. I know he's owed a lot of money and that will figure into this type of decision, but he IS on the last year of his contract and I could absolutely see them cutting ties with him sooner rather than later if he continues to not hit once the regular season starts. If we get to late April and he's hitting .200 or less I think the Rangers might cut bait.

McCutchen Is a RH batter, not switch. I think Joc gets at least a month into the regular season before they consider eating his contract. At least he showed up in better shape this year!

I do like the McCutchen addition, even though he is obviously towards the end of his career. An established veteran hitter who is willing to be a backup OF/DH probably won't be a bad thing. He and Joc can basically split the DH spot, since Joc typically doesn't bat much against LHP. This is assuming Joc doesn't get DFA'd/cut.

I will say, Evan Grant was hinting at some potential concern that Jung has yet to return to the lineup following his injury. That guy can't seem to stay on the field.
