So it was not embedded in the sand/bunker?

Looked to be deemed embedded outside of the bunker, hence why he had to drop outside of it. Free relief

No, it was in the rough/wet ground just above the lip

No. It was in the grass. I had to read the rule change. But somehow that doesn't seem to follow the spirit of the rule.

Looking like a 3 horse race tomorrow. Have a hard time seeing someone outside the top 3 shooting a 65 or so to get in the mix.

What a great leaderboard to go into the final round. Even a teaching pro in the top 10 with lots of big names around him.

Connor with a terrible putt and a USA chant breaks out. These New York fans are bringing it.

Funniest thing, to me anyway, was Hovland's reaction to criticism of his clothes.

https://sports.yahoo.com/pay-money-viktor-hovland-explains-140719133.html

"When asked about his day one outfit at Oak Hill in the 2023 PGA Championship and the colorful nature of it, he confirmed he usually goes for more subtle styling.

No," he said, "I wear a lot of gray, black, and that's about it."

So, why is he rarely seen wearing gray and black in Majors? Well, of course, because he is a paid brand ambassador for J Lindeberg.

"Well, J. Lindeberg, they give me this stuff and pay me money to do so, so I just show up and wear what they want me to wear," he admitted.

https://www.sportskeeda.com/golf/news-i-give-sh-t-viktor-hovland-tells-fans-doesn-t-care-think-outfit-pga-championship-2023

And during a back and forth with a fan:

The fan continued saying:
Quote:

"I don't think golf fans really have a right to criticize, like when it comes to fashion sense."
In response, Hovland said:
Quote:

"I don't give a s**t anyways."

Didn't he play at Oklahoma State? Outfits make sense

Anyone else think the PGA is worried right now with Koepka in the lead. I don't care about the PGA and LIV stuff but you have to think they DO NOT want a LIV guy winning the actual PGA Championship.

On another note, I've got to hand it to Oak Hill. This tournament is playing more like a US Open. Only 7 players are under par.

Agreed on the course. Been an awesome tournament so far. Really testing the players. That rough looks BRUTAL.

I watched most of the day yesterday. Great day of golf that challenged the players. Couple thoughts. A lot is being made in articles about koepka and dechambeau being booed at the first hole. But none of the articles discuss how they were wildly cheered after and the crowd went really wild after koepka's last birdie.

Then the Connors ruling on the embedded ball. That is the second time I have seen that and both times it was the tournament leader. And in both cases, the guys got free relief. I dont see why that is any different than hitting a ball into a shrub that you cant hit the bal out of. I know it's the rule but that rule should change to assess a 1 stroke penalty with a drop.

It sounded like one specific group on the first tee box. And as more groups went after I think it was clear they were just hammered.

I have a vague recollection that there was more heckling than usual at Bethpage as well. May just be a New York thing.

Tend to agree on the relief. Hit one in the middle of fairway and into a divot and you get no relief. Hit a bad shot and embeds in rough and you get relief.

So the rule is ten seconds after reaching the ball? So maybe 12-13 seconds after the ball stops? His took about 33 seconds.

So they're technically correct, but that sucks. We'd count it in my local game.

I see Koepka with a 66 and winning at -10 with these conditions today.

Ever hit an approach to the green that gets embedded? Should that be played as-is? If not, how do you determine which embedded lies should get relief and which should not?

I'd be open to divot relief in a fairway but the embedded rule is a good one IMO.
Enrico Palazzo

It was embedded in mud/the ground, not grass. There is no such thing as embedded in grass under the rules

You can't. And that is the issue and. Just seems a bit unfair when a good shot that gets unlucky (in a divot) gets no relief. I'm open to divot relief in short grass. We play that way on our group. We take relief in a fairway divot.
Enrico Palazzo

The problem with relief from divots is that there is a long life cycle to a divot (fresh ones, partially healed, and almost healed) and lack of clarity around what is "in" vs not in. Almost impossible to write a rule that could be applied consistently. An embedded ball is much different.

I'd also point out that Conners didn't exactly get to drop into a good situation. Still had a problem advancing that ball well

The embedded rule to me is odd. Hitting a ball onto the green or hitting into a divot, you at least hit good shots. But when a guy doesn't clear the lip of a bunker, that is a bad shot and should have some type of penalty. It's like hitting into a bush. You have to take a penalty and a drop.

Worse than that his playing partner Speith is the one that told him to wait as he went to mark it after it didn't drop. Pretty ****ty all the way around.

Spieth was right to tell him to wait because it's determined by scorers whether it will count or not. No penalty assessed for waiting.
Enrico Palazzo
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Exactly. With Spieth's advice, he at least had a shot. If deemed too long, then it's the same as a tap-in. Made it sound like Spieth screwed him somehow

How do you write a rule that says whether the embedded ball was a result of a good shot or a bad shot? Embedded ball in green or in rough 5 feet from the shot or as it lands are all treated the same.
