I think I like Matty Fitz to get a 2nd US Open. Playing great and especially if its as windy as they expect.

Wide fairways so it's definitely a bomb and find it course for a USO. Depending on the setup I could easily see one of the bombers having an advantage. Potgieter, Rory, Woodland, Knapp or one of the Hjgaard twins. If the rough is tall it will turn into a shot makers/ ball strikers contest Scottie, Fitzpatrick, Morikawa etc

Weather will always be crucial, especially at Shinnecock.

Thursday- 50% chance of scattered showers
Friday and Saturday- clear but winds 15-20
Sunday - slight chance of showers in the evening.

Did you say "if the rough is tall"? It's Shinnecock…rough is always on the menu.

If you haven't seen the video….he advanced the ball about 10 feet.

That's what I consider naive area or gorse, I am talking about primary rough

Yes it's been a couple years, but Brooks won here in 2018. Withdrawing last week, could be a pretty big deal, tho.

Ya I don't see Shinnecock favoring bombers unless said bombers also can hit a fairway consistently. Guys who hit fairways and are great tee to green should be on your dance card.

Koepka wasn't even top 20 in accuracy in 2018, so it can be done. He averaged +10 yards better than the field and hit 50% of the fairways

Quote:

While Brooks Koepka lagged behind the average by hitting only 50.1% of his fairways (28 out of 56 over four rounds), the straightest hitters that week managed much cleaner paths off the tee.

Brian Harman 66.4%
Chez Reavie 64.3%
Russell Henley 62.5%
Tommy Fleetwood 60.7%
Dustin Johnson 58.9%
Henrik Stenson 57.1%

Watching Major Cut series with Bryan Bros & Horvat.. this place looks as tough as it gets with the wind up. Ready for some carnage.

The other winners at Shinnecock have been been Retief Goosen, Cory Pavin, and Ray Floyd.

Floyd was considered a longer hitter, but what set him quart was his short game. The other two were known for their iron lay and accuracy.

Just think if you spray it off the tee you're dead this week.

With the wind and low humidity I expect it'll be playing really firm and fast. That will negate some of a distance advantage for longer hitters.

No love for the 1896 winner, James Foulis?

My poor wife is going to have to hear how I played each hole as they show them on TV all weekend. I can't wait. She says she doesn't care, but doesn't mean it.

Guys like Young, Rory, Scottie have a huge advantage this week with the tee times. Thursday AM into noon winds at 4mph and gusts up to 8mph. Starting after noon on Thursday winds at 22mph and gusts up to 35, that continues until Monday. The guys going out early on Thursday will have the only advantageous conditions of the week, whoever starts hot may be very hard to catch.

They better be watering those greens and letting them grow out a tad or this thing will end up with stoppages because the balls won't stay still on the greens. Gonna be a bloodbath

As much a tradition as the Masters in the spring, it's about time for the annual *****ing and moaning from the players about the tough, unfair conditions.

I'm likely in the minority, but I am not all that excited about Shinnecock.

I'm just fine with a US Open final score of -2 or -3. Par is a good score.

par 70 is a crock of ***** I know some of you love your so-called impossible conditions and +par scores, but the US Open scoring is always a crock.

Quote:

Par in golf is determined by evaluating the expected number of strokes an expert golfer should take to complete a hole, primarily based on distance, terrain, hazards, and course design

Definition of Par
In golf, par represents the number of strokes a proficient or "scratch" golfer is expected to take to complete a hole or an entire course. It serves as a benchmark for scoring, allowing players to measure performance relative to this standard . Individual holes are typically assigned par values of 3, 4, or 5 strokes, though variations exist for unique course designs

I like Burns at 40/1 - if he doesn't blow up last year in the weather could have been a different story. Although Spaun's putt will always be legendary
