Need to ditch the Krups blade grinder and upgrade to a burr grinder so I get more out of my good coffee beans. A far overdue upgrade.

What say you guys for recommendations?

You can find the Capresso Infinity for under $100. It's comparable to the Encore and may be the most quiet grinder on the market, but their customer service isn't great wheras you can get replacement parts and service for an Encore.,
just got the Infinity for Christmas. First "decent" burr grinder I've owned.

I can attest it is MUCH quieter than the cheapo Krupps burr grinder I've had for years. Love it so far.

I have a Baratza Encore sitting in the closet. It was being kind of finicky... which is why I upgraded. I'll give it a test run and if it works fine I can ship it to you if you'll cover shipping.

Quiet is nice while the little ones are still sleeping.

Very kind of you to offer this JAH. I'm game for this unless you are in BCS then I could come snag it from you.

What we finicky about it? How long you had it?

I'm in Austin. Probably won't be in CS for a while. It's pushing 3 years old now. Had it for 2 and then it's been in storage for a year or so.
It stopped grinding when I had the hopper in the correct position. When the hopper was in the incorrect position it would work. As soon as I ordered the other one it decided to start working again. I'll try to give it a test run today.

I had a buddy who went to Columbia, South America every 3 or 4 months in 2010. He would always bring back a suitcase full of South American coffee. I usually ended up with the bulk of it.
The best coffee, out of quite a few different kinds, was one called Sello Rojo. It's already ground. You can find this on Amazon. I've been buying it since 2011 from Amazon.

Good morning, just wanted to follow up on this and if this is something we could still do. Even if I have to mess with the one you got a little bit or even order a part from Baratza, I'm good with it. Let me know and have a good day. Thanks!

Holy crap. I should have never had kids. Little one started daycare this week. Totally forgot about this. Just fired it up and it works great. Shoot me an email: jacobbocce72 at gmail dot com and we can figure out shipping.

How is everyone making espresso?

Been doing pour overs with the chemex and the v60 and my wife recently got me this Hamilton beach espresso maker and I'm wondering if it can make a good shot or if I should get a flair.

I just found this thread and am enjoying it.
Lots of talk about grinders, beans, brewing method, etc.
Maybe it's so basic, but what type of water do you use?
Straight from the tap, filtered from the tap, bottled, RO? I have a RO/DI filter I use to make water for a saltwater aquarium and was going to use that water but heard it could actually cause problems for machinery.

I have a Jura machine (c60) that was great when it was new. I started having problems with it after only 2-3 months. I was using water from my fridge with a filter, then the little Jura filter in the reservoir. After multiple times of sending the machine back, Jura sent us a different refurbished unit. I started having the same problems with it.
The issue I had was it was not making a full cup. I had it set to make 8ozs, but it would make less and less, until it now only makes 3-4ozs. I have run multiple cleaners and descaling cycles, wiped down every surface I could get a pipe cleaner on, taken the covers off and blown out the coffee grinds/dust out with compressed air. Now I have my old braun drip pot out as a stop gap. Im going to definitely get a new coffee setup.

One thing that you'll learn about the coffee thread is that it's pretty much dead.

Thinking about pulling the trigger on the Breville Precision Coffee Brewer. Anybody know anything about it?

Have you heard of Third Wave water? They sell mineral packets that you put into a gallon of distilled water to create the "perfect water"

I learned about it from talking to a barista one time. I only use them occasionally when I just happen to get a gallon of distilled water to make with the Chemex.

We were in your spot for a while - going through different machines that just couldn't hack it.

Finally just said, "**** it, we've talked about it for over a decade, let's just do it." And we pulled the trigger on a La Spaziale A53 (basically a Vivaldi mini).

We've put that machine through it's paces for about a year now. It pulls a great shot and is exceptionally consistent. I clean the group head and deep clean the machine about once per quarter. I use the deionized water from the machine in the Whole Foods.

We also picked up a pricey but amazing grinder - Eureka Mignon Specialita. After a year of using it, we have it dialed in just right to grind out a single or a double at just the right consistency. I'm used to it to the point now where I can correctly adjust the grinder just by looking at the beans and smelling and feeling them. Don't have to grind test shots.

All of that stuff was extremely expensive but I haven't been to a coffee shop in a year and now I'm the ass hole that turns his nose up at Starbucks.

Very nice blindey,
The simplicity of the Jura machine is what attracted us. Basically push a button = get coffee.

I can tell I need to do more research, I had not heard the term "brewing a test shot" before now.

Thanks. Once we got used to the fact that a fully automatic machine wouldn't hack it unless we were willing to drop north of 5k we found that option.

So the semi-automatic means we have to work more for our coffee but we have a lot more control. It took some time to really learn how to use it but now I get exactly what I want for the price of the inputs.

One last thing: proper Italian made espresso boilers also have a heating element on top to keep your cups and mugs warm. So the top of my machine is warm so my morning drink will get poured into a warmed mug and stay hot longer.

I bought a Baratza Encore grinder after using a cheap blade grinder all this time. I always thought, "how big of a difference can it make?" Well, it made a big difference. I am very happy with the coffee I'm making at home now.

Descaled my kettle yesterday with vinegar and forgot to dump it out. Busted out the siphon pot this morning and dang near barfed when i drank the first (and only) sip. Dump your vinegar, everyone.

Not knocking the previous recommendation. it's solid but I've been buying from a new coffee import place in Houston called Ship Channel Trading Co. They have a tasting room in Houston and ship nationally. You can get roasted or green beans. He leans towards African beans but does South America and India as well.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071ZWR7M8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and does the job

They gave me a 20%code that anyone can use CB20BEAN.
