Irish scientists believe unproven drug touted by Donald Trump could be used to treat COVID-19

https://www.msn.com/en-ie/health/medical/irish-scientists-believe-unproven-drug-touted-by-donald-trump-could-be-used-to-treat-covid-19/ar-BB178LOQ

Quote:

A team of Irish scientists believes that they have discovered a new way of using a drug touted by US President Donald Trump to treat COVID-19.

Trump came in for criticism in recent months when he claimed to be taking a preventative dose of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, to protect against COVID-19 despite expert warnings that its efficacy as a treatment was unproven and that its consumption outside the bounds of authorised prescriptions could be dangerous.

In May, the World Health Organisation (WHO) suspended trials investigating the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine as COVID-19 treatment after a study was published in medical journal the Lancet suggesting that there was a slightly higher mortality rate among coronavirus patients who received the drug.

The WHO stressed that the safety of hydroxyhloroquine as an anti-malaria drug is not in doubt.

However, an Irish team of researchers that includes chemists and pharmacists has suggested that the inhalation rather than the ingestion of hydroxychloroquine may prove more effective as a COVID-19 treatment while requiring a lower dosage.

The novel method of administering hydroxychloroquine occurred to Cork-based retired pharmacist John Farragher during the early stages of lockdown, prompting him to reach out to other scientists through the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals (SSPC).

Mr Farragher told the Irish Mirror: 'I thought it most desirable that the dose should be lowered but wondered how we might achieve this but still retain the efficacy. It looked impossible until it struck me that the disease is initially a respiratory infection and as such it could be treated in the lungs before it spread throughout the body.

'Lungs constitute less than 2% of body weight so if we could treat them with a low dose of HCQ, about 2% of normal dose, we could avoid the side-effects

What Made Asia's Largest Slum a Success Model for Treating COVID-19?

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/07/what_made_asias_largest_slum_a_success_model_for_treating_covid19.html

Quote:

On July 9, 2020 Asia's biggest and densest slum shocked the world by announcing just one new positive COVID-19 case despite being a cluster and hotspot.

Dharavi is no ordinary slum. It is one of the densest in the world, housing more than a million people. It provided some of the background for the Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Dharavi contains pockets where as many as 650,000 people are crammed into 2.5 square kilometers. In comparison, New York City has only around 95,605 people for 2.5 square kilometers.

India feared the worst when a cluster outbreak of COVID-19 was reported in Dharavi. It could have become the biggest COVID-19 disaster zone in the world. But by using proactive measures, Dharavi contained the virus.

Media around the world, like the Los Angeles Times, have reported the success. Even the World Health Organization praised Dharavi.

Reports credit the huge turnaround to various factors. Most focused on Dharavi's use of widespread testing and contact tracing. One is the use of an anti-malarial drug. But they ignored the policy most responsible. Indian doctors used Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) for prophylaxis (preventive) treatment -- the same drug the American media have politicized.

Dharavi's COVID-19 infection rate dropped drastically from April through June. In July, new infections were very low, almost reaching zero on July 9.

Officials have credited this turnaround to "A combination of hydroxychloroquine, vitamin, and zinc tablets along with homeopathic medicines."

HCQ has been widely used across India to treat early-stage COVID-19. It is also prescribed for prophylaxis among those who have come into contact with people who have tested positive.

In India, HCQ has always been legal. The government's official COVID-19 task force, the Indian Council of Medical The ICMR guidelines recommend prophylactic use of HCQ

Yale epidemiologist story now picked up by Newsweek

The Key to Defeating COVID-19 Already Exists. We Need to Start Using It | Opinion

Harvey A. Risch, MD, PhD , Professor of Epidemiology, Yale School of Public Health

https://www.newsweek.com/key-defeating-covid-19-already-exists-we-need-start-using-it-opinion-1519535

Quote:

As professor of epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, I have authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and currently hold senior positions on the editorial boards of several leading journals. I am usually accustomed to advocating for positions within the mainstream of medicine, so have been flummoxed to find that, in the midst of a crisis, I am fighting for a treatment that the data fully support but which, for reasons having nothing to do with a correct understanding of the science, has been pushed to the sidelines. As a result, tens of thousands of patients with COVID-19 are dying unnecessarily. Fortunately, the situation can be reversed easily and quickly.

I am referring, of course, to the medication hydroxychloroquine. When this inexpensive oral medication is given very early in the course of illness, before the virus has had time to multiply beyond control, it has shown to be highly effective, especially when given in combination with the antibiotics azithromycin or doxycycline and the nutritional supplement zinc.

On May 27, I published an article in the American Journal of Epidemiology (AJE) entitled, "Early Outpatient Treatment of Symptomatic, High-Risk COVID-19 Patients that Should be Ramped-Up Immediately as Key to the Pandemic Crisis." That article, published in the world's leading epidemiology journal, analyzed five studies, demonstrating clear-cut and significant benefits to treated patients, plus other very large studies that showed the medication safety.

Physicians who have been using these medications in the face of widespread skepticism have been truly heroic. They have done what the science shows is best for their patients, often at great personal risk. I myself know of two doctors who have saved the lives of hundreds of patients with these medications, but are now fighting state medical boards to save their licenses and reputations. The cases against them are completely without scientific merit.

"Third, concerns have been raised by the FDA and others about risks of cardiac arrhythmia, especially when hydroxychloroquine is given in combination with azithromycin. The FDA based its comments on data in its FDA Adverse Event Reporting System. This reporting system captured up to a thousand cases of arrhythmias attributed to hydroxychloroquine use. In fact, the number is likely higher than that, since the reporting system, which requires physicians or patients to initiate contact with the FDA, appreciably undercounts drug side effects.

But what the FDA did not announce is that these adverse events were generated from tens of millions of patient uses of hydroxychloroquine for long periods of time, often for the chronic treatment of lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Even if the true rates of arrhythmia are ten-fold higher than those reported, the harms would be minuscule compared to the mortality occurring right now in inadequately treated high-risk COVID-19 patients. This fact is proven by an Oxford University study of more than 320,000 older patients taking both hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, who had arrhythmia excess death rates of less than 9/100,000 users, as I discuss in my May 27 paper cited above. A new paper in the American Journal of Medicine by established cardiologists around the world fully agrees with this."

Treating early saves lives: A tale of three COVID patients
By Jeffrey I. Barke, M.D.

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/07/treating_early_saves_lives_a_tale_of_three_covid_patients.html

Quote:

I have been treating those infected with COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Our interventions have made it abundantly clear that early treatment is critical to preventing hospitalization and death, regardless of the underlying risk factors that may be involved.

The following stories deal with real patients, only their names have been changed for obvious reasons.

Jane is 77 years old and has significant ongoing health issues. She called me shortly after testing positive for COVID-19. She had no symptoms. Since she said she felt well, she was inclined to wait and watch and simply isolate herself in her house. I convinced her that because she was at a high risk for a troublesome outcome, waiting for symptoms was a bad idea. Instead, we started her on a treatment involving Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) + zinc + Vitamin D3 + Vitamin C.

It has now been more than two weeks and she continues to be symptom free. We will retest her weekly until she is no longer positive.

Steve is 40 years old. He called me several days after developing COVID-19 symptoms of fever, severe dry cough, and fatigue. I immediately started him on HCQ + Z-pack + zinc. Because he had significant pulmonary symptoms, I added nebulized (inhaled) budesonide - an inexpensive older generation asthma steroid. Within 48 hours, his fever and cough had completely resolved and a week later he felt back to normal.

John is 57 years old. I was called by his wife who had found me through social media. She sounded desperate for my help. John was sitting in the emergency department of a local hospital with fever, shortness-of-breath, and a severe cough. She thought he had been exposed to COVID-19 over the 4th of July weekend and was now on day 11 of symptoms. John was admitted to the hospital with bilateral pneumonia and required high-flow oxygen to keep his saturation levels above 90%. The local hospital does not allow HCQ treatment but did start him on Remdesivir and dexamethasone. His condition worsened over the first couple of days of being in the hospital but now after a week he was very slowly improving although still requiring oxygen.

These three patients are typical of the many I have seen over the past few months suffering from COVID-19. I have not had a single patient that I was able to treat early enough that required hospitalization. Interestingly, we are now seeing more studies that show the benefits of HCQ. In my opinion, HCQ should be made an over-the-counter drug just like situation is in many counties across the world. In doing so, it would take the politics out of the current situation in the United States whenever the use of this drug is mentioned.

Local doctor sees success treating COVID-19 patients with 'HCQ cocktail'

https://kyma.com/news/2020/07/24/local-doctor-sees-success-treating-covid-19-patients-with-hcq-cocktail/

Quote:

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY)-Dr. George Fareed finds success in treating coronavirus patients with a combination of a hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) cocktail made out of azithromycin or doxycycline and zinc.

For three months now, Dr. Fareed has been using the HCQ cocktail to treat patients at Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District and an outpatient clinic in Brawley.

"Hydroxychloroquine along with zinc and either azithromycin or doxycycline and it's based upon now many studies from colleagues around the world. It's shown to be an effective treatment and that's what we need," said Dr. George Fareed, physician.

Saving many lives who have been hit with the virus, Fareed says it's all thanks to the combination cocktail he's prescribed to patients.

The uses of hydroxychloroquine for coronavirus has sparked national debate after studies have claimed that using it can lead to serious side effects. The FDA has also warned against its use, but Fareed says it's a drug that doctors have been using for years to treat malaria, lupus, and arthritis.

"We need to alleviate the fear in the population that they should know that they can take something that will help them avoid pneumonia and deterioration that we want to see stopped. I work at Pioneers hospital and as an outpatient medical director. We've seen thousands of patients and our results have been very favorable," said Fareed.

Fareed has written a letter to president Trump and the presidential task force saying we need a drastic shift in our approach in fighting the virus.

Presenting his findings and of his colleagues who have found success treating patients with the hydroxychloroquine cocktail.

Fareed believes the HCQ cocktail is the answer in helping fight the virus.

DadHammer,

This thread is the definition of confirmation bias. There is no attempt to find truth or learn more about HCQ. It is to filter out any negative anecdotes, studies, expert opinions and present only positive ones, regardless of the quality of the source or information. At least the other thread encouraged rational debate. We shouldn't cherry pick information based on whether or not it confirms our prior beliefs.

The evidence is becoming overwhelming in favor of early use HCQ, in a lot of people's opinions. My Dr says it's working. With the inhaled steroid I believe it may even Be more effective.

The title does state success stories so it is bias to successful events. You could start a thread that lists unsuccessful stories if you want.

In her sermon, Immanuel offers a sort of demonology of "nephilim," the biblical characters she claims exist as demonic spirits and lust after dream sex with humans, causing all matter of real health problems and financial ruin. Immanuel claims real-life ailments such as fibroid tumors and cysts stem from the demonic sperm after demon dream sex, an activity she claims affects "many women."

"They turn into a woman and then they sleep with the man and collect his sperm," Immanuel said in her sermon. "Then they turn into the man and they sleep with a man and deposit the sperm and reproduce more of themselves."

Immanuel's bizarre medical ideas don't stop with demon sex in dreams. In a 2015 sermon that laid out a supposed Illuminati plan hatched by "a witch" to destroy the world using abortion, gay marriage, and children's toys, among other things, Immanuel claimed that DNA from space aliens is currently being used in medicine.

"They're using all kinds of DNA, even alien DNA, to treat people," Immanuel said.

She runs her own church, Firepower Ministries.

Agreed that this isn't the model spokesperson for "the cause" . Unfortunately all kinds of folks with their own agendas are taking sides of the HCQ issue. Regardless of this woman's outrageous beliefs and affiliations, the HCQ cocktail needs to be evaluated appropriately (early stages & not to sick patients with other complications) to fully understand it's true value. There is a bunch of anecdotal evidence showing it is beneficial and the mechanism seems to be proven by pre-COVID studies. The Lancet and other BS studies and corresponding politics essentially torpedoed this readily available treatment.

Chloroquine is a potent inhibitor of SARS coronavirus infection and spread

Note: NIH report from 2005

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1232869/

Quote:

Background

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus (SARS-CoV). No effective prophylactic or post-exposure therapy is currently available.

Results

We report, however, that chloroquine has strong antiviral effects on SARS-CoV infection of primate cells. These inhibitory effects are observed when the cells are treated with the drug either before or after exposure to the virus, suggesting both prophylactic and therapeutic advantage. In addition to the well-known functions of chloroquine such as elevations of endosomal pH, the drug appears to interfere with terminal glycosylation of the cellular receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. This may negatively influence the virus-receptor binding and abrogate the infection, with further ramifications by the elevation of vesicular pH, resulting in the inhibition of infection and spread of SARS CoV at clinically admissible concentrations.

Conclusion

Chloroquine is effective in preventing the spread of SARS CoV in cell culture. Favorable inhibition of virus spread was observed when the cells were either treated with chloroquine prior to or after SARS CoV infection. In addition, the indirect immunofluorescence assay described herein represents a simple and rapid method for screening SARS-CoV antiviral compounds.

I think the fundamental "issue" here is that 99%+ of individuals who contract COVID-19 survive. The vast majority of which never set foot within a hospital. Whether you take HCQ or drink 7-Up while doing the Hokey-Pokey your probability of survival is extremely high. It is insane that a random drug like HCQ has become politicized to the point where a "Warrior-Patriot" demon hunter's video is being retweeted by the President of the United States.
