Ignore it? Let people live their lives as they see fit with no restrictions while you choose however you wish to handle it? Stop getting tested? Stop trying to play god for 18 months running now? Realize it's going up just like last July, only at lesser rates thus far?

It's a less deadly variant of a virus that already kills an incredibly small percentage of people that get it, for which there is a seemingly effective vaccine available. Unless you're an 800 pound or 90 year old unvaccinated person, completely ignore it.

Human behavior drove smallpox from existence and has rendered numerous other viral pathogens impotent in the developed world (measles, mumps, German measles, rotavirus, polio, etc.)

One of the great achievements of mankind in the 20th century was gaining some semblance of control over infectious pathogens.

It won't be able to be controlled. Too much vaccine refusal. Will just have a bunch of Darwin award winners over the next several months.

Not sure cases matter much. Delta appears to be far weaker than early strains. Check out the cases and deaths chart for the UK. Massive spike in cases, very little change in deaths.

I haven't seen a vaccinated patient in the hospital in almost a month, and I still haven't seen a patient who died that was at least two weeks out from their final dose. It's their decision, it's just unfortunate that so much needless suffering could have been avoided.

Hard to go on a summer vacation overseas (like I normally do) when a positive test won't let you back in the country.

This is the correct answer. And also stop testing people who aren't symptomatic at all.

We're performing more than a million tests per day again. At a 1% false positive rate that's 10,000 false positives per day. Keep that in mind when we're looking at 30-40,000 positive tests per day.

At risk people should absolutely be vaccinated. If this whole thing wasn't so politicized then the at-risk population would be fully vaccinated by now and daily hospitalization levels and daily deaths would be in the hundreds and single digits, respectively.

Yep, instead of arguing about masks and vaccines why don't we spend our time addressing some real policy issues in this country and then actually doing something about it?

Sorry, should have said respiratory virus. Thanks to a combo of vaccines, seasonality and previous infections it's basically now the flu. We don't "control" the flu, but the media also doesn't breathlessly report every new flu case.

Same bug, just different age cohorts. Older folks are priority for vaccination, and in turn fewer deaths.

For people and places that are vaccinated, delta won't be a problem.

People and places that aren't vaccinated don't care.

So seems like it's under control.

Is it unfortunate that lots of people are going to die from a preventable disease? Sure. But the world is full of unfortunate things.

Just a quick reminder that deaths lag cases by quite a bit. It certainly won't be as bad as last winter thanks to the vaccine, but another hundred thousand or two Americans will likely die for an all too preventable reason. Some on this board will still pretend these deaths didn't happen and that it's good to not get the vaccine. Others will pretend like it's normal for well over 100,000 to die from the flu every year... but we'll get through it I guess. I still can't believe some of you think the right solution is to pretend COVID doesn't exist. We absolutely should be paying attention to what is happening, but the era of making social changes when the widely available vaccine prevents hospitalization and death. It's just ridiculously depressing that so many of you cheer on the cases and subsequent deaths by promoting anti-vaccination bull**** for some misguided and childish political statement. But here we are.

I also think people should take the flu shot very seriously this year. It looks likely that this will be one of the worst flu seasons on record due to waning immunity from lack of exposure last year. Throw in a potentially pretty bad COVID wave this winter, and it'll still be way worse than your avg. Flu season. Just my prediction.

I am on this weekend. Definitely a surge. All unvaccinated under 50s. Have seen no variant. 2 30 somethings circling the drain. Both morbidly obese.

The vast majority of at risk people are vaccinated. The vast majority of those not vaccinated are not at risk and very unlikely to have severe infections and death (though some will because of the sheer number of people were talking about).

I'll bet that barring some major change like a mutation that actually renders current immunity irrelevant (which is extremely unlikely) we won't see another 100k deaths over the next year, let alone 200k. Nor will we see anything like that annually.

Edit: and what you call the "anti vax" crowd are not the ones cheering an increase in infections and deaths. That would be the "this is what you get for not getting vaccinated" crowd.

It'll be an interesting fall/winter for sure. Kids are already getting wrecked by RSV right now. If the flu and flu like viruses can take hold this winter we may be in for a wild ride. And unfortunately some will use it as a reason to continue lockdowns and mandates.

Continue lockdowns and mandates? Where? Flu and flu-like viruses take hold every year. They will again this year and the next and the next. THE only place I will don my gaiter again will be a plane (have no choice and my doctor as something tells me she will), otherwise I won't even carry it.

In the schools

Since kids can't be vaccinated yet, schools will wa t kids to mask-up and maybe resume with remote learning, which would be extremely unfortunate

We are destroying the development of our children with this crap

Children, especially the young ones, need to be around other children in order to develop socially, mentally and emotionally

Keeping them masked, distanced and learning from home is doing a monumental disservice to our children
