Jessica's time of 51.52 is below the OG A of 51.55. What does that mean? Does she qualify for a spot on a relay team?

Beard finished 8th (last) in the 400M finals. How on earth would she qualify when 7 girls beat her?

Just an open question to understand how it works... in particular, the OG A standard. She did not do as well as others yesterday. She has done well in the past.

Who knows? injuries... as an alternate... politics... past performance.

to be dead honest...Jessica is good but not elite yet. She does have the A standard but the US has a lot of 400 runners who are better than her.

it's like the Kenyan marathon runners. they have (i kid you not) over 200 atheletes who have ran the A standard. You have to be cream of the crop in this field to qualify

right now Jessica is young and will improve, but there is little chance she will go to London on the relay

Javelin finals are today. He made it through prelims with ease

gamedrunk - it is really pretty simple. Fastest 3 in finals with an A standard or better go to London to compete in the individual race. Beard finished last. No way she goes.

They need a 4th for the 4x400 relay. I don't know how they pick for the relay. But again there is no way the last place finisher gets picked.

Sam also still needs the A standard, which is 82m.

To say she isn't capable of the 100/200 double is an incorrect assessment, but I get where you're coming from because I think she is a much better 200/400 runner if she's doubling up. To say she'd get tired is nonsense, though. She's done the 200/400 relay and 200/400 doubles many times before.

We'll see what happens, but USATF may not even allow them to make the decision amongst themselves.

Settling it by anything other than a run-off is ridiculous.

I want to see a run-off, and I wish the "neither have a preference" part was written so that they'd match race. However, if the runners agree to a coin toss, I don't have a problem with one.

Sam just threw 81.86 on his second throw!!

Don't look now but Sam is freaking lighting it up in the javelin!

Didn't see yours Laredo...sorry. LOL

Sam just threw 5 1/3 inches short of the Olympic A Standard and is in first place by over 12.5 ft! This is an improvement on his best throw of more than 6 feet.

Foul on third throw

What happens if he doesn't hit 82m?

He gets a nice prize for finishing on the podium at the national championships, and he enters his off-season program.

that's about it.

there are three javelin throwers that have met the A Standard this year and they all have valid marks made.

Two Aggies that should be on the U.S. team and aren't. This blows!

...and I love constant reminders about Flanagan slowing down the damn pace for her friend that already had the 'A' standard in the 10K! What a load of crap!

He still has another throw left.

Humphreys' best throw this year :: 261-3
Humphreys' throws today :: 264-10, 265-2, 268-7

What an outstanding day for Sam Humphreys!

He wins the Olympic Trials and has FOUR throws beyond his previous personal best.

He should make the team as a provisional or something. That blows.

Sam did a great job. Wish the weather had been better. Can't stand seeing the meet in Eugene. Nike owns the meet and USATF. It is a shame because Sacramento would have been a better situation and perhaps Sam would have hit a qualifier there.

Its hard to justify their inclusion on the team when the folks in London wouldn't allow them on the field.

They could see the clock during the 10000m, if Natosha or the others had 31:45 in them, they should have gone and done it.

I'd love to see more Aggies in London, but they've just not put up the individual marks. Its tough, but there's nothing to be ashamed and nothing to be angry about. They've finished on the podium at their national championships, and both Natosha and Sam are still growing as athletes and both have some Olympic cycles left in them.

You should have to prove you're the best against the best, not thanks to some performance at a random meet months ago. Having a national champion sit at home while fourth and fifth-place finishers qualify for the Olympics is ridiculous on its face...but not as ridiculous as announcers saying athletes are rigging trials on national television.
Ben Puig 97

Completely agree with above poster. What's the point? The dipsticks that threw 82m at some random meet didn't even have to throw today. Sam out threw them and should go. What a farce.

I don't know how you could say that athletes are rigging the trials.

I didn't know there was a rule that everybody has to follow the leader and can only pass when told.

The only way an athlete can slow a race down is if everyone else int eh race allows them to. To complain about the fact Rogers didn't make the standard on someone slowing the pace is bs.

Rogers could have upped the pace anytime she wanted to, but she sat behind allowing that slow pace to be run. The only runner that tried to quicken the pace ended up cutting her off and tripping her.

The goal is to get the best athletes to the olympic games. Th rules have been in place for years, its not like its a new game.

If you can't prove you can compete with the worlds best at some given point in the last couple years (Olympic A standard) you don't don't get to go to the games.

Sam could be sent to the games with his B standard, you just have to sit two of the others at home. Its not in the USOC or USATF interest to only enter 1 person when they can enter 3.

Going by the rules of A and B qualifiers, Rogers wouldn't even be at the games. If you didn't want to send the other two A qualifiers tot eh games you could do that, but the only way Rogers could go to the olympics would be for the first place runner not to go.
HCLi

Agree wholeheartedly with clw04

The last competitions in the past 14 months do matter. In that time span, you've not only had nationals but also world championships both outdoor and indoor, world cups, grand prixs, invitationals, etc. These are elite events where the competition is internationally reknown in foreign territory. not putting anything down on nationals but the environment of the olympics is more like the competitions i've listed than nationals

I'd rather send our best -- the ones that step up when it counts, when it's raining (like it likely will be in London), when it's tough -- not the ones that coast at Trials because the game is in their favor.
goldag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It just seems like the trails this year mean nothing. Ok I can see if the second placer finisher doesn't. If you are not going to send the champion then don't hold the event. Maybe this year is just odd in that the A standard and winning are so off.

The UK 2nd place didn't meet the A standard in the javelin either. Then again he is 50 and went to the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.

Trials mean everything except if you don't have an A qualifier.

The only countries that send B qualifiers are countries that don't have an A qualifier.
goldag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I do realize you have a chance to get it in the trials. I also assume they know going into it what could happen. Javelin and pole vault I think should be contested with fair conditions for it. If they don't get the A level then fine.
