Odenkirk's character is just not cut out for real police work. We saw that when he showed up to the Hess and Nygaard murder scenes and got sick both times. This episode, Molly is doing some real police work while he's showing pictures on a markerboard about an upcoming snowstorm. From his POV, the less ickiness he has to deal with the better.

As for the Duluth chief, he obviously doesn't think much of Gus since he puts him on substitute animal control all the time. If one of the two chiefs is crooked, I'd be more inclined to say it's the Duluth guy. I think his history with Molly's dad is going to be fleshed out more in later episodes.

True incompetency vs. perceived incompetency is a theme of the show however. Lester is an incompetent salesman and criminal (why didnt he taze the deaf guy too and then dump them both in the lake? and remember he killed his wife because she basically said he was an incompetent male). Odenkirk's character is an incompetent police chief. Deaf guy and his partner are incompetent criminals as well (they didn't even frisk Lester to take away his phone and taser when they kidnapped him, which should have doomed them). Hess was a big strong guy with a lot of money and got taken down, etc etc.

Molly, Gus, and Malvo, on the other hand, are the real forces of good and evil playing out in the show, and all three of them have an image of incompetency (an insubordinate officer, a glorified dog catcher, and a backwoods minister). We the viewer, on the other hand, know that they are formidable officers and a frightening villain.

One detail I thought was interesting was that both police stations have the same photo of George W. Bush on the wall, who was president in 2006, but was certainly not very popular at that time. Putting the picture of a powerful man famously derided as a bumbling, incompetent yokel on the wall in both police departments is a pretty clear sign from the writing/directing teams that we are supposed to see the police leadership as idiots.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see another apparently idiotic character turn out to have some part to play, maybe Dmitri.

I think you are reading your own politics into this. He was President at the time. His picture was hung in government and municipal offices all over the country while he was in office. It helps establish the time period of the show.

I loathe Obama and his incompetency, but would expect to see his photo in municipal buildings from 2008 to present and not think everyone in that building was incompetent just because they hung his picture up.

Not my politics actually, but thanks for assuming. Just a stab on why it would be prominently featured. The writer/director didn't have to put it there and certainly didn't have to put it there twice. This seems like the kind of series where details are both on purpose and important, and I like reading the details of shows that invite it.

Odenkirk made up his mind that Lester absolutely cannot be involved - and a killer caught driving his not-ever-reported-stolen car means it could go back to Lester. Beyond incompetence, he's proven he's more than willing to use his authority to shield Lester no matter what. He's eager to dismiss any and everything that points suspicion at Lester, and the drug dealer narrative was simply invented to help do so. I doubt even he really buys it.

Well, the chief is not quite as dim as he seems.

And some cop in Duluth is on the take.

I was sure Lorne was going to take out Gus while he was on the phone.

Odenkirk slowly realizing what Molly was telling him was great. Pretty sure it's the Duluth chief that's on the take.

The dark look on Molly's face when she went into Lester's home room after seeing the dead chief's widow and baby was so good.

Really good episode...don't like Lorne sitting outside Gus' house. They're doing a good job raising the tension around the danger to him and his daughter.

The chief finally came around! I guess he's not in on it then. I agree that malvo sitting outside is unnerving.

When did Lester move the hammer? Last time he looked at it, he put it back in the washing machine.

Yep, Chief Saul is coming around and starting to realize his buddy who couldn't possibly be involved might be involved.

This was an interesting episode.

The scene with the rabbi-neighbor reminded me of the Coens' "A Serious Man."

I would hate to think that something bad is going to happen to Gus or his daughter, but then I really liked Vern in Episode 1, too, and look where that got me.

I wonder what that song was that opened the episode? Before the singing started, I would have guessed it was a Woody Guthrie song because of the tune on the guitar. I know Guthrie stole a lot of his melodies from traditional songs and hymns. The tune sounded a lot like the one Guthrie used for "Ain't Got a Home in this World Anymore" and others.

The last scene with the deputy staring into the room at Lester was great. Lester looked evil. Starting to feel the character turn and am no longing rooting for him as the bumbling idiot. Great character twist.

The name of the song played before this week's episode is "Wildwood Flower " or "I'll twine mid the Ringlets".

Lester is realizing his "ah geeze" defense is not going to work and he needs to be smarter.

I don't think Lester has moved the hammer. IMO, Molly felt around, felt the hammer, and left it there because she wasn't supposed to be there. She then put the washer back in its spot, will work to get the search warrant of his house, then she will be the one to "discover" the hammer.

My guess, at least.

Thank you, mike. From your Wiki article,

quote:
Woody Guthrie used the tune of I'll Twine 'Mid the Ringlets for the verses of his song The Sinking of the Reuben James, although he added a chorus to the song.

That explains why the Reuben James song has been in my head all day.

Bunk, I too wondered if the hammer could be used as evidence if she found it in the way she did, so I'll bet you're right.

I don't know Bunk, the natural reaction would be to pull it out and use the sense of sight to verify the lesser sense of touch. She did not have a "what is this?" moment and pull anything out. I think Lester moved the hammer. I found it interesting/unusual that she went to the washer after Lester's incoherent babbling about the washer.
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That could be, as well. I just took a guess. She definitely felt something and moved it around, then left it in there.

There's no way she is dead. And Colin hanks can't be that incompetent. He almost killed dexter for crying out loud.

Then again, dexter drove head on into the biggest hurricane in history and ended up as a logger up north. Guess that show had much more of a fantasy/Sci fi element than I ever gave it credit for.

I lost a lot of respect for Gus in that episode. He was kind of a bumbling policeman, but man....

I hope Molly is OK. Maybe this incident will force Gus to become assertive and start to take some risks. I wonder if Molly's dad will get involved.

After gus just did that, the only police work he will be doing would be vigilante work. He shouldn't have a gun at this point. He should go teach in inner city Minneapolis. Ask Prezbo.

Buy hopefully molly is OK

Excellent episode.

Best show on TV right now? The Americans is great too. As much as I love Justified, it isn't on this level. Walking Dead, while fun, ain't even close.

Awesome.

I can't believe they'd kill off the most likable protagonist-my guess is she's got a vest or her winter coat helped her.

Holy mokes the killing of Adam Goldberg was gruesome. How the heck did BBT make it rain fish? Pretty big body count last night.

Did the scene where Goldberg shot the guy in the gas station (shown in the series teaser) make it in the show? I don't recall seeing it?

I was thinking the same thing. I didn't expect Goldberg's character to die because we hadn't had that scene yet.

Well, up until his throat gets slashed.

I don't think we've discussed that the dim-witted son has called around to pet stores and discovered that someone bought all those crickets. Dad was too panicked to listen to him. You would think that the son would have mentioned what he knows to the security chief.

This show is killing off people left and right. I will be very sad if Molly doesn't make it. She must not have been wearing a vest, because there is a large pool of blood. On the other hand, the way most TV shows work (Breaking Bad is an obvious exception), if she is not obviously dead before the episode ends, she is probably not dead.

Also, I thought she and Gus were a little emotionally remote from each other in the early part of the episode. Maybe they're nervous with each other? Molly was not as talkative as she usually is.

The one thing that makes me think Molly is still alive is that there was no pool of blood. This show like most others typically shows a big pool of blood when someone is killed

Lester has gone Lorne Malvo.

And agree with the others that I think Molly must have been wearing a vest, or the wound is at least non-fatal. Maybe my eyesight is failing, but I didn't see a pool of blood for her. I thought it was her coat sort of sprawled out under her.

I've been wanting to see a Goldberg character get whacked since he played that annoying puss in Dazed and Confused and got his tail whipped by Clint.

The gun in the nephew's bag is how is going to get the cops to come search his brother's house. He made it was unloaded, which was nice.
