i thought it was pretty incredible. i think it was a very wise decision to break from the traditional "stand-alone" story and continue the plot from Rogue Nation.

i'm not sure where they'll go story-wise from here, but i can't wait to see what they do next.

surely they have to ACTUALLY make Ethan the bad guy. like... the real one.

IMF lets the wife die... he goes psycho and wants to take down the IMF. Ethan is planning an assault on bases around the world, has to break into the IMF headquarters to get the locations of them, and then wants to destroy them all. even if it's not kill the agents (which would be sweet), he wants to take out their infrastructure. then it's like Safe House... but with IMAX helicopters.

as far as locations: great wall of china, japenese gardens, nile river, coliseum, and fk it cliff dive off the secret base underneath machu picchu

that's what i'd do.

I really like the new take on the classic theme song.

Yep, it's pretty great.

The whole soundtrack has this feeling of foreboding, which is great. And it makes sense now that I can hear a bit of Dark Knight in there. Turns out the composer is an apostle of Hans Zimmer. (See what I did there?)

If (like me), you are just interested in the theme, the track is titled "Fallout."

Yes, Lorne Balfe is his name.

Here's the track that's taken right out The Dark Knight. Maybe my favorite on the soundtrack after Fallout.

Tom Cruise is never going to go for that. That dude IS the mission impossible franchise now.

I was actually convinced Ethan was going to let Luther die in the beginning, or he'd botch it and get him killed.

It would suck to lose him, but would've also added a bit more tension and gravitas to the whole movie, knowing anyone could go. I guess losing Baldwin provided that though.

If I had to guess, I think one of the regulars goes in the next one.

Well Ethan is the soft-hearted spy as opposed to Bond who doesn't care about anyone. Bond is the better agent but I like the MI movies better.

Well I'm glad I saw it this weekend cause the boss in the cubicle next to me is literally recapping the entire thing to another guy. (Who hasn't seen it.)

Watched MI1 and MI2 last night (on sale on iTunes so I completed my MI collection).

MI1 is definitely the outlier in the series as far as style and tone, it's definitely a different feel and some different characterizations. It's also earlier in his career so Hunt wouldn't be the same character he is now, but he felt much more "fun" and the whole film had more of an old school spy feel. Technology is a limiting factor for obvious reasons, but there's still a few great scenes (the famous ceiling sequence in particular).

MI2 feels a lot more like the newer installments, it's also a John Woo flick so Hunt went a bit overly ninja in a few scenes Definitely a lot more action and more of a modern feeling threat (bioweapons) but the Woo influence made it feel like a pretty big tonal shift from the first film.

Will probably try to revisit MI3 tonight, I've seen 4 and 5 pretty recently but might as well keep going I suppose.

funny - I watched MI 1 last night - I felt like Tom Cruise was playing Ethan 'Maverick' Hunt in the movie - very Top Gun type feel for his role that definitely has changed and matured over time

Each movie gets better - with 3-4-5-6 really becoming my all time favorites...

If anyone saw the movie in IMAX at Regal and has Regal rewards, check your email. You should have a digital code for Rogue Nation.

Couple of cool Easter eggs I noticed:

In MI1, in the safe house in Prague, Ethan says "Can we get a cappuccino machine in here?" In MI2, Hopkins offers Ethan a cappuccino or espresso before briefing him.

In MI1, Max and Ethan have some dialogue about her liking paradoxes. In Fallout, the White Widow mentions her mother liked paradoxes.

That's a perfect way to describe it actually.

I was also kind of amazed to realize that the first film came out over 20 years ago (1996), and Cruise really doesn't look all that different.

I saw Ghost Protocol on FX last night for the first time. Wow. Please tell me that Cruise didn't do his own stunts in this one.

Similarly, on Fallout, McQuarrie ended up nixing a stunt during the sequence in which Hunt is chasing after the CIA agent played by Henry Cavill, and Cruise was supposed to jump through a glass window, bounce off the roof of a train, and tackle Cavill to the ground.

Cruise, McQuarrie said, was totally fine with executing the stunt. But the director didn't think it offered much opportunity to capture the star's face, and it would require a lot of painstaking, time-consuming technical planning to pull off. So they didn't do it. "We can do it, but why bother?" said McQuarrie. "It was never about Tom going, 'I won't do it,' or me saying, 'It's too dangerous.' We just looked at it and we were like, 'It's kind of a drag.'"
Jesus, Tom.

That movie was truly amazing. Compare it to Skyscraper, another big budget, action type movie with an A list superstar. I watched Skyscraper (and was very excited to do so), and after I left, was laughing out loud at just how incredibly stupid that movie was. Contrast it with this one, a movie in which I was glued to my chair, didn't want it to end, jaw open for much of the movie, and walked out thinking "HOLY CRAP THAT WAS AMAZING." And I'm not typically impressed by such films. I watch some of them but I'm not an action guy, generally speaking. But this? This is one that I'll remember.

Very slight spoilers from the first 20 minutes or so...

Been thinking, and if I had one complaint about the movie, it was the end of the sky diving sequence. Did anyone else find it odd that Cavill's character didn't even remotely acknowledge that he was unconscious for most of the fall and possibly even struck by lightening? That was so strange to me. And I assume Hunt had to replace Cavill's character's oxygen tank because it malfunctioned due to the lightning? It was a stunning sequence overall, no doubt, but there were two or three odd beats to it. Even Cavill's character undoing Hunt's oxygen right before they jumped was weird, though I got that it was almost more of a playful messing around kind of thing.

Yep, I had the same thought. I couldn't tell if he was trying to be a smartass by not even acknowledging it, or literally didn't realize it happened.

And why did they have to do a HALO jump to get to a fundraiser at the Grand Palais?

Just a nitpick. Really loved this movie.

Agreed. None of it made any sense. Hunt MIGHT have said something on the plane about the bracelets needed for access and not tripping some signal or something, but I don't see why that would require a skydive.

Also, this bit from the first trailer was cut - Hunt hanging onto a cable, which snaps or something, and then he dangles above the party. I wonder this sequence explained it all further somehow...

But yeah, it's all nit-picky. This was literally the only issue I had with the entire movie.

There was a quick line that said they were flying there with the plane being disguised as a commercial airliner. That's why it was so high.

Now why did that have do that or not just land the plane? I guess they thought airline traffic was being monitored so this was the most secret way to get in there. Thats just a guess and I'm not defending the scene.

Remembered hearing that too. If I'm not mistaken, they didn't have the tickets/bracelets to get in because it was so last minute.

I'm not defending the scene either, I'm just glad it f***ing happened.

The smart ass thing tracks, I think. Hadn't considered that in the moment. Cavill's character seemed genuinely confused as to why Hunt didn't have an oxygen tank, but if he was instead being sarcastic, I can buy that.
