He'd at least have to make a M:I that makes Marvel tyoe money. Sure the films are critical hits, but they are still relatively modest box office success stories when you look at how big the budget are for the films. He'd have to break $100 million opening weekend to get that kind of freedom. And even then, it's rare. It took the Russo brothers 3 films to get there (Winter Soldier, Civil War, and Infinity War). I would say they only now have the ability to make what they really want to.

It'll be very interesting to see how strong this holds this weekend.

With very little competition, coupled with stellar reviews, I'd be surprised if it drops more than 45% or so. MI3 dropped only 47% in its second weekend, which is the strongest hold in the series. (Outside of GP, which went up due to being Christmas.)

I'll go with $35M.

The Marvel movies are big because they're Marvel. Heck, even crap DC films put out huge numbers. Action films and comic book films require different types of directing, especially since so much of a comic book movie is computers. That's what makes what Nolan did with Batman so impressive, the ability to cross the two and still have it come out as genuine.

I agree.

I was basing most of my argument on McQuarrie's own assessment of Hollywood currently, from this podcast (which I recommend if you liked the film):

https://varietyplayback.libsyn.com/christopher-mcquarrie-mission-impossible-fallout

Basically, he thinks there are very few directors who actually get to make exactly what they want carte blanc. I'd agree, mostly because original films aren't making much money right now. I don't think he particularly likes making action films, from what it sounds like either.

+1 on that podcast. Have it on my follow list but hadn't gotten around to it.

My God, hearing him describe the insanely complicated shot of when Tom jumps out of the plane right to the perfect spot for the camera was greatness.

Tom sat next to McQuarrie at the premiere, and when the movie was over, Tom nudged him and said, "Yeah, we can do better."

How can you not love the guy.

I wish the ex wife and the MI6 chick didn't look so similar.

I also wish they'd quit using the mask trick in every movie, it's just too powerful of a trick. Like how do we know Hunley is really dead and that wasn't just somebody in a Hunley mask? Nothing is believable when there's a possibility that anyone could be someone else.

Other than that, fun movie.

Really? I think that Elsa is significantly better looking

Also The mask situation is one of the themes of the entire movie so it has to happen every movie In addition to multiple locations, gadgets, team members That's the point

I agree.

And the next Star Trek really needs to move past the tired "spaceships and aliens" thing. Overplayed.

Peeling off a mask is literally one of my favorite plot devices of all time. I've joked about this with friends but basically if anyone is peeling off a mask, I'm in. Thumbs up.

Well if every movie was like "SURPRISE! It's aliens!", then yeah I think eventually you'd figure out before the movie starts that the surprise is going to be aliens.

In MI:4 (or maybe 3), when they kidnap the wife and they have her and Ethan tied up in a room together and they're saying they're gonna kill the wife if Ethan doesn't tell them where the thing is, do you really think peeling the mask off the "wife" was the most interesting way to resolve that scene? I feel like that's about the worst way to go, but it was also so obvious that's what they were gonna do.

Fantastic hold! Word of mouth has been great and I think will only get better. I've had multiple friends who haven't seen any of the other movies in the franchise praise Fallout.

Very excited to see how this does with minimal competition for the next few week!

Talking about box office, why didn't they release it earlier? For me August means back to school stuff and the free time lessens. If this opens beginning of July, I probably see it twice in theaters.

Funny enough, they probably saw a loaded July and didn't feel like anything in August would be a true threat. I think it's actually going to pay off for them.

August these few years have benefitted movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Turtles, and Suicide Squad. Guardians had word of mouth that helped it out, but the other two aren't that good of movies. But with little to no competition, both made a ton of money.

Last or second to last weekend in July is usually one of the biggest weekends of the year for blockbusters. In addition to the titles Taj mentions above, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, a couple of Harry Potters, etc., have all released in the second half of July. Next year in the same spot is Tarantino's Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, which will likely kill as well. Echoing Taj's point, it's because August is usually so wide open in terms of competition that this has become the norm. Not to mention, it's still a couple of weeks 'til school starts, we're a month out from football, etc. Still plenty of time to pack the theaters.

Interesting. I feel like when your kids have activities, August is when stuff starts picking up. Obviously that's not the case given the history.

Really enjoyed this one. The car chases were excellent and the bathroom fight was top notch!

I got a kick out of the helicopter chase because they started at Lake Quill and Sutherland Falls in New Zealand (I've hiked from the lake to the bottom of the falls) and it ends at Pulpit Rock in Norway (I've hung my feet off the ledge right where the detonator was while having a beautiful lunch looking out over the fjord). A lot of fun to see iconic locations I've been to on screen.

Well, let's see if I can make it 2 for 2.

Best hold for third weekend is the original with -32.2%. (Again, not counting GP due to the Holiday release.)

Then M:I-2 at -36.2%.

So, I'm gonna go with -35% for $23M.

so where does Fallout rank on everybody's lists that we worked so hard on before its release?

i think this is my order...at least today:

1. Rogue Nation
2. Fallout
3. Ghost Protocol
4. M:I 3
5. M:I
6. M:1 2

i've watched all of them in the last month and other than M:I 2, I think you could make legit arguments for any of them to be #1

I think I'm:

1a. Fallout
1b. Ghost Protocol
3. Rogue Nation
4. M:I 3
5. M:I 2
6. M:I

I need to watch Fallout again, can't make the call there on just one viewing but it's right there with Ghost Protocol (which I love).

I don't love M:I 2, but I've got it ahead of the original just because the first feels like such a different film compared to the rest of the series.

I have rewatched 1 and 2 in the past week.. they are just good movies, but Ethan Hunt isn't who he really is in those movies and personally, I think they should just not be watched anymore.. 1 is slightly better than 2

MI-3 is awesome - best villain with Phillip Seymore Hoffman- it was great - highly recommend!!

MI-4 - it was better than 3- so many locations and twists - prison scene, Burg Kalif, car park finale, awesome!

MI-5- it was close... but MI-5 was slightly better than 4 - I couldn't believe it would be possible but it was even better

MI-6 - all the pressure in the world to perform AND IT DID! Best one yet! I've seen it with my boys, and then saw it again with my daughter and it's true - non stop amazing.

and listening to the Director of 5 and 6, I think we can expect 7 to be out in 3 years... can't wait!

1. Fallout
2. Ghost Protocol
3. Rogue Nation

Gap

4. MI 3

Huge gap

5 and 6. MI and MI 2. I've only seen these two once and don't remember much other than I didn't like them.

MI 1 is a classic spy movie similar to The Third Man. In the first act everything goes to hell and the rest fo the film is a whodunnit trying to differentiate the good guys from the bad guys. It's never clear until the finale.

MI 2, as well as the rest of the franchise, are straight up action films. It has good guy running after bad guy or vice versa the entire film. Occasionally they give the bad guy a cool codename (e.g. colbalt") or throw in plot twists where someone is a double agent, but they're still action films.

Greatest action movie of all time. Absolutely no question.
We finally got to see this tonight. Great movie. Felt like a callback to earlier adrenaline-filled action movies like Die Hard.

I wouldn't say I'm the biggest fan of this series, but I've seen them all at least once and my impression is that they have gotten better with each release. But greatest ever? Nah, for me that is Raiders of the Lost Ark.
