Does anyone know if you would still be able to get your Victory points at Alamo Drafthouse with this?

I'm wondering the same thing. I went ahead and signed up, so I'll let you know next week.
Thanks. And I guess, theoretically, it would work for any theater rewards program if it works with Victory.

I read a comment that said that even though AMC will get paid full price for tickets from MoviePass, they are worried about what happens when MoviePass inevitably goes under. The MoviePass consumers will have been conditioned to value movies at unlimited movies for $10 per month (or around $2 per movie), instead of the $10-12 average price per movie that AMC charges. Therefore, these consumers may stop going to the movies altogether once MoviePass folds.

I guess that argument makes a little sense? Doesn't seem too convincing though.
As somebody who used to make the bulk of his living online games, that's exactly how it works.

These theaters should be all over this or any thing else that will cement habitual moviegoing.

I wonder if they have a "Travelocity" arrangement where unsold seats they can get discounted within 24 hours of showtime?

They pay the theater the price of the ticket and lose money if you use it a lot. They've gone "full start up" trying to generate growth at any cost in hopes of cashing out on a sale of the company based on that growth.

Quote:

The company plans to go public by the end of January 2018, and promises a huge growth in subscription numbers. As of December last year, MoviePass had 20,000 subscribers. It hopes to hit 100,000 by next year. Farnsworth is confident that goal can be met.

They aren't looking past the IPO.

And they're selling your info like crazy....

For one thing, it actually isn't unlimited movies. It is only 1 movie a day and it can only be the 2D version. So you are can't go to a movie in the early afternoon, then go have dinner and catch a night movie.

i don't think they have a choice. they are selling a ticket to a person with a debit card. that's all they can see.

I think it is more complicated than that. There has to be some sort of agreement in place based on Moviepass and AMC having a previous agreement

If if was just like a debit card, why does it only work in 91% of theaters?

Perhaps they don't want to target them? Or they don't want to put effort into tracking movie showings at a bunch of little theaters.

It's not more complicated than that, they pay full price and don't have deals with the theaters......yet. They're taking millions in losses on tickets in an attempt to build market share for both an IPO and to get big enough that the movie theaters will have to cut deals with them.

Their lack of support for mainly small independent theaters is mainly due to how clunky their process.

Any analysis of their plan that starts with the assumption they're making money is fundamentally flawed because they have no intention of making a profit any time soon.

It doesn't seem sustainable unless moviepass negotiates lower rates.
Dont forget that their end goal is to sell your information and movie watching habits to the highest bidder, even if they don't know who that is yet. The age of big data is here.

Edit: D'oh, EastSide beat me to it.
selling metrics as they relate to consumer habits just seems smart to me. I am actually surprised movie tickets are not price weighted by potential demand. Most people wont pay $12 for a potential dud but they may pay $5. Maybe they are, haven't been to a theatre in 18 months.

Was talking about this with my wife last night, I don't understand why theaters don't go to this kind of model.

At $10/month for 12 months, that is $120 a year per person for unlimited movie access, so $240/year for a couple. That does not include food or concessions.

At $12/ticket, you would have to see 10 movies a year for the theater to start "losing" money on ticket sales. But how much do theaters really make on ticket sales? Their costs are the same running a movie whether there is 2 people in the theater or 200. So it makes a lot of sense to me for them to go to a subscription based business. Especially for the majority of months in the year where the movie offerings are crappy.

Additionally, say somebody goes over 10x a year. Now you are losing money on ticket sales, but how much extra are you now making on concessions? How many people who would normally only see 5 or 6 movies are now going to the theater twice that much and buying a soda and popcorn every time?

Then add into the data mining and it seems like a winning formula to me, especially for the theater chains who would not have the added overhead of actually purchasing the tickets like this app has.

Basically they didn't anticipate the demand they received and had to push back on getting everyone their cards. Expected between Sept 6-10 now.

Doubtful. Even if the movie theater gives free passes to people, they still have to pay the distributor their percentage of the full ticket price.

So if MoviePass gives them $5 for the movie ticket that sells for $9 and their deal is 60%, they still have to give $5.40 to the distributor, so the movie theater just lost $.40. Now, they will break even on the previews, but overall that is a losing proposition.

Is there a way to know from home whether a movie is sold out or not

Could pose issue since you don't select movie until you arrive

Lots of theaters show you empty seats before you check out. My locals never sell out except for big openings, which I hate going to.

Maybe someone can help me with this because I didnt see an answer on their website.

I understand how the app/card process works and that I have to go to the theater to physically get the tickets.

But lets say the theater I go to is the kind where you pick your seats when ordering online through the theater website. How do I pick the seats I want with Movie Pass?

I've had to select my seat when I got to the theater. I haven't been able to preorder tickets before getting to the theater.

I think that would kill it for me. My wife and I see 40+ movies a year but we always pay in advance and select our seats.

I got mine on Tuesday after my area of Houston started getting mail again. I used it last night with no issues to go see Dunkirk finally.

I believe you can only use the card to pay online when the app specifically says it has an E-ticketing option. There aren't very many of those though, I'm only seeing three in Houston.
