Finally got my card. Just used it for the first time.

And if the deal wasn't good enough, I can still rack up Regal rewards points using Moviepass.

Man, I am going to see a LOT of movies and eat a lot of free popcorn.

I got mine today, and I'm planning on using it Wednesday.

So how exactly does it work? Ideally I'll still be able to get Victory rewards points at Alamo with it.

Literally like any other credit card. Only thing you have to do is check in on the moviepass app as soon as you get within 100 yards of the theater. Takes 10 seconds.

Have yet to use the card, but it worked flawlessly for Studio Movie Grille. Picked our seats on the app, entered the confirmation code at the kiosk, and were done. Didn't even need to check-in.

Used it again to see Mother! this weekend. Worked great but movie is terrible.

Already seen 4 movies since receiving mine.

Hitman's Bodyguard - Funny but forgettable.
Big Sick - Loved it.
mother! - Never going to watch it again, but enjoyed it for what it was.
E.T. (35th Anniversary screening) - As great as always. One of my favorites. Final 15 minutes still wreck me. John Williams is God.

There is some interesting negotiating going on behind the scenes right now:

MoviePass is trying to work a deal with theaters where the theaters will cut rates slightly on some tickets for moviepass (money goes to moviepass, not you) and moviepass gets a cut of concessions.

The thinking is that if MoviePass is adopted far and wide and some theaters accept this deal, then those theaters will be able to do e-tickets through the MP app. Consumers will be more likely to book movies through the App so they can order easier than using the janky debit card.

Further, they are saying that moviepass customers will spend $3-5 more per ticket at concessions because it feels like they got a movie ticket for free since they didn't pay for it.

In response, most movie chains are now throwing around their own personal subscription model behind closed doors to bypass MoviePass, but at the same time, it looks like MP is willing to take a major hit on the movietickets at least for a year or two. So if AMC decided to do a subscription model, you might be more likely to only go there and they might make it up on their own.

No one wants to become Blockbuster and no one wants to become dependent on MP's wishes to sell movie tickets.

Currently, theaters are getting sending off 55-60% of movie ticket prices to the movie companies and keeping the rest. I think the highest paid movies are the Star Wars movies, which bring home ~68% and the theaters only keep 32. Previews do net theaters ~$.27 per trailer per seat sold. Then their main profit comes from concessions.

The theaters that sell real food are the ones that stand to hurt the most from all this because while the food is still more overpriced than same quality elsewhere, the margins aren't anywhere near what the margins are for your run of the mill AMC that sells a Large Popcorn+Coke for $14.50.

So while MoviePass is interesting, it may not last if movie theaters decide to make their own in-house subscription, which the major ones are already working on.

Just thought I would pass all that along.

And I still don't have my MP card. :'(

And amazingly I've had mine for like two weeks, and still haven't used it because I've been just too busy/tired at night during the week and in full football mode on the weekend

I've gone to three movies since ordering my moviepass. Still no card.

Most expensive was going to Cinepolis in Euless (FtWorth) Friday night.

At the hotel without a car, so Uber there and Back ($12/each way). Then the ticket was $12. Popcorn+Coke=$16.

First theater I've been to that didn't do refills on popcorn and their large is about the same as a medium at most other places.

They did have the Coke machines with 90 different flavors like Fuddruckers or Santikos. Also their seats were the new fancy electric recliner types with tables. I love these seats. The Regal (formerly Santikos) in Tomball has similar ones, but theirs are loveseats with an armrest that can go down. Way better than the individual seats, but still fantastic either way.

Interesting info. But if theaters adopt their own subscription model, how would it disrupt MoviePass? I'd assume they would continue accepting MoviePass given that they're still just debit cards.

If you give consumers a choice, they will choose MP over a single chain since it can be used anywhere.

I would bet most watch all of their movies at the nearest theater. If that theater offers and subscription and ties it to exclusive rewards it could kill moviepass. Especially if the theater had exclusives for using their subscription.

As of now, I still get rewards at both Regal and my other local chain (Showcase). If they kill rewards on MoviePass, then I might be persuaded. Provided they're the same price, of course.

And I think they will. They can also offer other perks.

I am not saying it definitely will happen, but moviepass doesn't have that strong of a position.

Honestly, I think they ARE in the stronger position.

If theaters have to continue accepting MoviePass, and MP continues to offer $9.95/month, I just don't see how movie chains will be able to offer something better. They'd have to not only match the price, but provide some other exclusive incentive to offset the freedom of choosing any theater. (Ie. seat selection, buying advance tickets, etc.)

I know in my case, there's many movies that I can only see at certain theaters. Great example is The Big Sick, just a few weeks ago. Regal wasn't showing it, Showcase was.

You are in the far minority of movie goer. For you, moviepass is probably best.

Lots of people wont go see a movie if it isn't showing nearby.

They wouldn't have to match the price if they got the extra perks part right.

Yeah, maybe.

I guess I might be an exception because I have a Showcase theater just a few minutes from my office, and a Regal theater 1 mile from my apartment.

I can choose either/or on any given night.

The theaters will allow you to:

Pick a seat in advance
Order online
Order through the app

Movie Pass will still make you use the janky card when you are 100m from the door. I'd stick with the theater plan if they were the same price so I could order my ticket in advance.

If selecting a seat isn't possible ... does ordering your ticket in advance really matter for anything besides a big Friday night premiere that could be sold out?

I think the Drafthouse / SMG theaters will wind up doing better with movie pass. I see your argument that the margins on food are lower but I know for myself at least I'm still spending way more at Alamo Drafthouse for food than I am for concessions at a normal theater. Personally I almost never get concessions at a normal theater but always get food at the Drafthouse / SMG. Not only that but almost everyone in the theater at SMG or Drafthouse is ordering food and can order alcohol which has huge margins on it. In general the tickets at Drafthouse / SMG are generally cheaper than the normal theaters anyway and they do free movies or old movies for like 5 dollars all the time just to get people in the door, knowing even if its a loss on tickets sales food sales will make up that money.

I also have a hard time believing theaters would give up any concessions sales. I've worked at theaters in college and concessions are not just the main source of profits but are generally the only source of profits. Ticket sales like you said are split between the theater and the movie companies and the money the theaters make off tickets go to paying employees and paying the bills (rent, utilities, maintenance, etc.).

Movie theaters are moving to theaters with bigger, more plush seats that seat fewer people.

If you are in San Antonio, go to Embassy 14 and compare it to a year or a decade ago.

Theaters have much better seats, but much fewer of them to go around. If you like sitting in the front, it likely won't matter. If you like sitting center middle, it might matter.

Concessions are high profit items.

That large coke may cost them $.02/oz but a 44oz Coke with ice is really like 25oz of drink. So that's 90% profit. Similar on popcorn.

If people are willing to spend $4 more per person would a theater give $2 to make that happen? Absolutely every time. Simple business decision when that $2 is more than enough to cover your expenses and still generate profit.

But the theater would rather put out its own app and get 100% of it, but they have to do it better than MoviePass.

I know all about the costs - this all came from someone that owns multiple theaters.

I'm opposite of you. I almost always get popcorn and a drink. But I don't really like going to most food theaters because the food is generally not that great. Most theaters now offer beer. I know the Showbiz by my house is small, but they offer alcohol, ice cream, burgers, tenders, etc.

This. If it isn't showing at the Edwards Marqee on I-10, we probably aren't seeing it, but I can't think of anything they didn't get that I wanted to see. We go to iPic every now and then, but it's only about an extra 5 min drive.
