Solid finale, thought it was really well done. While it feels the season flew by it also feels like some events happened such a long time ago, like when Tess died. Really glad they did such a good job and we're getting at least another season. The second game is big enough that they could easily turn it into 2 seasons if they want to. People that think season 1 was a tough watch are in for a real shock with the second game's material. I know we're in good hands based on season 1 but apprehensive at the same time just because I know what's coming.

And for anyone interested in the discourse about whether Joel was right or wrong, I'm with Joel on this. I'm a father with a daughter, if the choice comes down to my daughter or humanity, I'm choosing my kid every time. Humanity would be doomed if the choice was in my hands as well.

One thing I strongly remember from the game was the Joel/ Dr. stand-off. Naughty Dog did something there that most other games don't. Usually a game has a count down clock (in the code) so if you don't shoot in time the character would be killed and you have to start over. you can just stand there and not shoot. But you HAVE to shoot the Dr. to continue the game.

I remember my first play through just standing there kind of hoping that the Dr. and nurses would realize they are outgunned and give up or run. Adds a new meaning to Part 2 for the player how the scene plays out.

I'm torn on the second part. When playing the game vs. watching the show, there is much more conversation and Ellie100% is aware that getting to the fireflies and having them discover why she is immune means she could die. That is one part they changed in the show. She thinks her immunity is in her blood (see Sam.) In the game that is never explored and you get the feeling (from part 1 and part 2) she knows she might have to sacrifice herself for humanity...and is OK with it. It's Joel that isn't. While playing the game and at the end when Joel lied to Ellie, and not like a "santa is real" type lie...my view of Joel changed forever. In my eyes he became a bad guy and any righteousness he had was gone. As the player I was mad at Joel for being so selfish.

But in a world of ALL bad guys...who is the bad guy, right?

My favorite thing about the finale is getting a good (or good enough) answer about the origin of Ellie's mom and, more importantly, Ellie's immunity. We can now assume that's canon now just because Druckmann co-wrote this and because there hasn't been anything in either game to confirm one way or another. A miracle of timing - got it. I'll take it.

Was concerned last week knowing that it was a 45-minute episode and I felt that the concern proved itself out. Yes, the episode pretty much stuck to the game beat by beat, but is that necessarily a good thing? It was a great episode of television and a just a "good" finale, but I still think it was a little undercooked. They added some dialogue, some background, some additional context just to get everyone on the same page in terms of stakes - but I don't know. It felt brief.

Pedro killed it. Bella killed it; her episodes-7-8-9 run has been fire. Merle killed it. Ashley killed it. The Rage Joel montage felt off. The decision to lay it on really thick that Joel and Ellie were on different trajectories in terms of their relationship with each other was a little too heavy handed and felt kind of off. The operating room scene could've been expanded on a little more which I think would've worked out well for TV and for setting up next season.

The finale (for television) was a B for me. They might have been a little too loyal to the source material which I feel like is a valid criticism since they showrunners have shown that they've been more than willing to step outside of the narrative box to greater effect.

S1 impressions.

Pros:

- Bella Ramsay and Pedro Pascal; even though I really liked both of their work before the casting, I had some doubt but they both were great
- The three cold opens in ep1, ep2, and ep9
- Episode 3 and episode 5 - both were 10/10 episodes
- Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson proving that they are equally as good, if not better on-screen actors than voice actors - give them more work
- Nico Parker
- Anna Torv
- Keivonn Woodward
- The clickers in episode 2

Cons:

- Maybe should've been a 10-episode season
- Needed more infected, no question; would've made things more balanced story-wise and would've hammered home the stakes more in episode 9
- Kathleen as a character and Melanie Lynskey as the casting choice
- Not that Joel was a chatty character in the game, but would've liked more lines for Pascal to chew on now that I think of it
- Wanted to see more cold opens

the show also left out that Joel discovered Ellie wasn't the first immune and others had died doing the same procedure to no avail.

i agree with Joel's actions in both the game and the show, but the game made Joel much more sympathetic and in the right in my opinion..

I think a big part of that is also that the game literally puts you in Joel's shoes. You've been protecting Ellie this whole time. It's harder to generate the same level of empathy for Joel's actions when you're viewing it as a detached observer.

I don't recall other immune people? I thought in the game it was specifically called out by the surgeon that 'her [Ellie] immunity is like nothing we've ever seen before."

I have a probably false memory of Marlene saying to Joel that there had been others. Not sure why I have that memory. I guess I need to go rewatch that episode.
there was recording you could find where a doctor is talking about Ellie's uniqueness.

depending on how you interpret what he says it can be seen to imply there were others with some level of immunity but noting like what ellie has.

again, it is open to interpretation. most do not interpret it that way.

Y'all are making me doubt my 9 year old memory. If I remember correctly, Joel heard tapes saying other people had died for a vaccine and that they were hoping Ellie wouldn't be in vain. I think her immunity was stronger. Again, it's been a while but I'm very confident that others had died in the process before her.

I think Ellie knew in the show she was likely going to die. That's why she was in such a weird and somber mood the whole episode. It never came right out and said that's why she was in a weird mood, but what else could it be? It seemed like she knew there was at least a good chance that she wouldn't be with Joel again after getting to the Fireflies.

And she was also suspicious of him after he rescued her and straight up asks him if he's telling her the truth. That also goes along with her knowing or assuming she was going to have to give up her life.

It might have played better if they had made it more clear that Ellie was on board with dying.

I mean she'd just brutally killed a guy that was about to rape her. I figured that was more of an effect on her mood.

I could be wrong because I haven't finish my replay on this, but I thought she didn't know about the potential for dying until Joel told her later. In the game I'm currently in SLC but haven't made it to the hospital yet. I think when he's wandering around he finds a tape recorder that explains what's going to happen IIRC, which is when he goes berserk.

I know at the beginning of the second game Joel and Ellie are on the outs with each other. I just remember her being upset because she wasn't given a choice in the matter, Joel chose for her. But the Fireflies didn't give her a choice either, and would not have, which is why they wouldn't let Joel see her. Neither side is right in that regard of removing Ellie's choice as to whether or not she should undertake the procedure. Without giving her the ability to choose I'm still on Joel's side.

I'm guessing he means we're getting the Rat King, that's really going to make the non-gamers **** their pants. That was the only part of the game that kinda scared me since you're running around in the dark while you're having to fight that thing.

So it will become it's own thread in due time but with the confirmation that game 2 will be two seasons (season 2 confirmed, season 3 will as soon as 2 launches...or the PC version of TLOU sells gang busters)

Where do you think they cut part 2 to create season 3?

I have two thoughts...
They won't get rid of Joel right off the bat. They will milk it. Unless there is enough flashback scenes where PP can still play a large role. So I could see Season 2 ending in the the theater standoff.
OR
Season 2 is told through Ellies eyes. Season 3 in Abby's...

I'm curious if they use a flashback style of storytelling or tell the story from a linear perspective. The downside is the big reveal about Abby and taking over mid game. I also wonder if you honestly don't even leave for Seattle until late season 2 and keep Pedro around as long as possible.

something like this will have to happen. The more I've thought about it the more right you are there's no way they're going to kill Joel in the first episode. In the game there's a lot of flashbacks showing Joel and Ellie's relationship in the museum and later on him confessing to her he lied…..there's enough to fill an episode or two before he gets killed which I think they'd do in episode 3. And even after that there's plenty they can come up with for flashbacks later on once we're watching through Ellie's eyes

Finally was able to watch at lunch today. I was camping on air date then kids were home for spring break, so I wanted to wait to watch on the big tv with the volume up.

Honestly, that's about as close to perfect a landing as it gets. Sure I would have loved more episodes and a few more monster run ins, but the story stuck to the original, hit all the notes perfectly and was expertly acted. I was fist pumping at Joel's rampage, and the last conversation was perfect. The end of playing that game for the first time is so emotionally draining, you don't know what to think. This guy you've rooted for all game is all of a sudden the bad guy. The show captured that turn perfectly.

All of the pre-credit scenes were amazing so maybe also would have wished for more of those.

Can't wait for season 2. I'll definitely need to do a game 1 replay before that.

he saved the life of the person he most cared about from a procedure there was no guarantee would be able to provide any value

that is not a bad thing at all.

you take what you can get from life. let other people deal with their own *****
