This kind of stuff is my absolute favorite sub-genre and the first episode did not disappoint, having familiar things show up in unfamiliar places and doubling and redoubling down on established themes is just awesome for me. Wasn't blown away by the big tentacles near the end, but loved everything else, especially how Steve showed up for battle and the iconic Cap shot coming out with the rescued prisoners.

Nice to have Hugo back as Red Skull as well.

That wasn't Hugo.

I think there is definitely leading to an Avengers level threat at the end of season 1

Sounds pretty boring and pointless.

This episode is (hopefully) as by the numbers or "paralleling that movie you know" as they'll come. Some of these What Ifs seem to be pretty out there and I'm all for it.

Episode I was a lot of fun, the animation style is interesting and works pretty well and LOVE the color palettes they used. Looking forward to more of these and seeing how weird they get

Not Hugo, but it WAS the actor who played him in IW and Endgame.

Love Ross Marquand

There's a few more of these and I could watch them all day, he's freakin brilliant.

Did they use motion capture to do the facial animations? Anybody know?

That was very fun. Optional viewing, in think, but fun.

I seriously doubt it, not worth the time and effort for this style of animation.

It's only really effective for 1:1 matching of actors to digital characters, and even then it requires a good amount of cleanup.

No legit studio uses that feature

I thought this was pretty fun. The Bucky character was odd and seemed completely out of character from the movie but maybe that was the point. He was far too cheesy and upbeat compared to First Avenger. But I guess that really doesn't matter here.

The title screen of the show is interesting if you study that. It looks like we get either an Iron Man or Vision with all of the infinity stones built right into the chest plate. Can't quite tell who it is.

Also looks like we get zombie CA and zombie Hawkeye.

He was kinda a "cool guy" and ladies man in Cap 1 so maybe they wanted to go back to that. But it was a little odd.

Yeah, he and Steve joked around a good amount in First Avenger. The whole Winter Soldier thing definitely dampened his vibe.

The "what if" missed opportunity here is that if Peggy Carter really was the First Avenger, it's incredibly likely she would have banged both Howard and Tony Stark.

THE WHAT IF COMICS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN KIND OF MEH. YES, THERE ARE SOME FANTASTIC ONES AND SOME REALLY TRIPPY ONES, ESPECIALLY FROM THE 70S, BUT BY AND LARGE A HUGE BAG OF MEH.

oops damn caps.
You're telling me you didn't notice the caps after the first word?

Why are you yelling at us?

I liked that this showcased that she liked Steve for Steve regardless of him being an Adonis.

Also seeing them fight together was great. I thought we were about to get Steve as the Iron Winter Soldier

how does What If work within the timeline framework established in Loki? i thought He Who Remains clipped all timelines other than the sacred timeline. but now we have a splintered branch from the 40's and the watcher indicating there are infinite timelines. do the events of the last Loki episode open the door for previously clipped timelines to re-appear? or do the stories in What If exist before the TVA goes back and clips them? or do those events just not pose a threat to He Who Remains, so they didn't actually get clipped?

or is this just a "don't worry about it and enjoy the cartoon" situation?

I think the Loki finale blew this all wide open, so now we can see these alternate realities that previously would have been clipped.

Also... Hayley is even smoking hot when animated. No surprise.
