Halo fans are pretty much 99% male. Appealing to women was dumb and should have never been done. I don't care what anyone says, this was a terrible idea.
Halo is the polar opposite of Star Wars, it's basically Saving Private Ryan (the opening scene) combined with Band of Brothers combined with Stalingrad. It's brutality and genocide on a scale that can scarcely be fathomed. It's a war of complete desperation where humanity is fighting a demonstrably superior enemy with superior technology and more manpower. It should basically be a modern war movie, just in a sci-fi setting with spaceships.
Yes women will be soldiers just like men, but it's not like humanity has any choice. It's either fight or die, there are no other options. Trying to make Halo into something that it isn't was never going to workout well and I cannot fathom what the hell the executives are thinking.
You misunderstand. They aren't doing this to entertain a wide audience and make money. They are doing this as left-wing political propaganda. They know the show is going to fail. They don't care about that. A total failure is easily worth the cost to the left if it means they can co-opt a popular international brand and use it to push their agenda.
But setting politics aside, I agree with you 100%. Halo is a blue chip entertainment franchise. 343 missed on Halo 5, yes. But the lore, the universe, and the series as a whole are sacred to so many people and probably helped define two decades of their lives, irrespective of their profession or political views. I know that is the case for me. I remember playing Halo CE back in 2001-2003 during middle school and early high school. We had LAN parties and would play co-op campaign over and over. My friends and I all read the books to get jacked for Halo 2. Then Halo 2 came out my junior year of high school. Everybody was playing it and the online community was unmatched by anything else on console up to that point. Hell there was a year or so when the gaming nerds at my high school commanded real respect walking around the halls because everyone knew they were badass at Halo 2, and that was cooler than being on the football team. Then Halo 3 came out my sophomore year at A&M. It was even better than Halo 2, and that was like the one constant the rest of my time in college. ****ty day of class? Came home, drank beer, and played Halo 3 multiplayer with my roommates and our friends who were online. Finished taking a final? Came home, drank beer, and played Halo 3 with my roommates. Out at North Gate until 2 a.m.? Came home and played Halo 3 with my roommates. Hooked up with some chick I met at The Tap? Came back and played Halo 3 with my roommates. Watched the Ags beat the t-sips the day after Thanksgiving 2007, then went to the Chicken, then came back and played Halo 3 with my roommates. Halo Reach came out when I was in law school. I love that campaign, and the multiplayer helped me reconnect with friends I had always played Halo 3 with at A&M. Now I am a 34 year old lawyer with Fortune 100 companies trusting me to go fight over hundreds of millions of dollars for them in the courtroom, but I still play Halo MCC at least once a week, and I've beaten the Halo Infinite campaign multiple times. It will probably always have a place in my life
What they appear to be doing to the franchise with this TV series is downright disgusting. I remember when Peter Jackson signed on to do a Halo movie right after he finished Lord of the Rings, but everything ended up falling apart and the movie never got made. Like you and millions of others, I have waited decades hoping to see Halo brought to life in a way that does it justice. Like you said, even though the fan base is largely male due to the subject matter, the Halo universe was always completely inclusive from the beginning because it was never about pitting humans against each other over their petty differences on Earth. It was about the entire human race, regardless of race or gender, facing an overwhelming existential threat, with no choice left for any human being but to fight for survival. The universe was perfect. It didn't need to be changed at all. It just needed to be brought to life exactly the way it was.
And after the last 21 years, this bull**** is what we finally get? That's ****ing unforgivable. Everyone involved in this ****show can **** right off.
