I guess I'll continue watching for nostalgia's sake. It's mostly entertaining.

I really hope they don't make this whole season about the fall of Reach and then never get to the Halo because the show gets cancelled

Happened across the full pilot of S2 on YT

I have never watched Halo before and have not paid attention to any of the threads or articles about it. Didn't even read this one. I flipped it on going in as cold as possible. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on the lore, having played all but one of the games and have read most of the books.

It was pretty meh. Zoned out last ten minutes or so. The fight scene was pretty cool but all the politicking is the exact focus of the story that will make me not watch the second episode. I'll consider this a one and done, especially if this release on YT is a one off.

I mean my expectations were in the basement for this series but somehow they managed to make a sinkhole down a further mile. This may be the biggest butchering of an existing source material that I've ever seen.

The Stand adaptation would like a word. I had such high hopes for a more modern and mature take on what is an amazingly deep piece of source material, but that went up in flames about 10 minutes into the first episode.

I mean, what is it with Paramount Plus? Does anything related to CBS have to be awful? I only had the service to watch USMNT WC Qualifiers in English live, but I have never found anything else on there that looks decent.
Still haven't seen S1 of HALO yet, but nothing trumps I Am Legend when it comes to taking an idea and then murdering it and burning the corpse until nothing is recognizable but stealing the name anyways.

I don't frequent the E! board much so I imagine this topic has been discussed already, but why, Why, WHY, WHY, do tv and movie writers have such a penchant for literally destroying extremely well established lore settings? Are they truly that egotistical that they must put their own personal spin on it and make it "theirs"? Honest question. Which it appears that Halo has done according to this thread. It's mindboggling to me and even offensive at times. Don't even get me started on the Hobbit...

This is HALO. This should be the easiest job in the world to adapt it to screen. THE STORY IS ALREADY WRITTEN.

Frustrating.

I am so damn apprehensive of the upcoming Fallout show... One of my most favorite settings of all time.

I am Legend or World War Z?

Because, while the I am Legend movie wasn't a direct retelling of the book, it wasn't such a massive departure that I was mad about it.

I was going to try this show and have never played the game so have no idea about the storyline so should be interesting.

Ha. True. I've actually had this discussion in the past. WWZ was a huge departure for sure, but I will give the writer's some leniency on that one. I don't know how one would be able to create 2 hour block of time to recreate a collection of unrelated (to each other I mean) stories that convey a greater story of that magnitude. A TV series maybe. Movie? I don't see it. I think condensing down focus of the stories around a single person experiencing them actually makes sense with the constraints they had to work with. I have to think that WWZ HAD to be rewritten to adapt it just due to feasibility.

I Am Legend not a massive departure? I am shocked honestly anyone can that think and cannot disagree more. It missed the characters, theme, moral, and final lesson. The book was centered around an ignorant white hick in a semi rural setting and trying to survive in a world of intelligent actual vampires he talked with and built relationships with. The whole point is that humanity had reached it's zenith and was finally being replaced by another species that had an incurable disease and the protagonist finally sees and admits this at the very end as he commits suicide after realizing he is the monster now.

The movie was literally none of that. Even exact opposite in most of it. I don't feel like typing it out but yeah, if you have read the book and seen the movie and still don't see how it is a massive departure, I've got nothing tbh.

See, I think the movie actually got a good bit of that right. Yes, the race of the protagonist and setting was altered, but we still eventually get the reveal that the vampires are sentient and have their own society and that the protagonist is basically their boogie man. That whole reveal was rushed, but I also don't think there's a good way for a single movie to encapsulate all of what the book's story entails. Maybe a miniseries could have done it, but I don't have a lot of faith that it would either. I liked the book and the movie for different reasons.

WWZ would be an incredible miniseries, imo.

Yeah, and it follows the alternate ending which was better than the one that made the theatrical cut imo.

this was finally an enjoyable episode. they did remove some major plot armor.

major plot armor.

every episode doesn't have to be that level but they're going to need more of that to bring in viewership to get a Season 3.

no way this gets a season 3.

all they had to do... was follow the damn script

they had literally 100,000 years of Halo universe history on which to draw from, and they went woketard.

I agree. This show is ****ing terrible. I'm going to finish it just so I can be fully informed on how much worse it can get.

Literally all they had to do was take the Halo Reach cut scenes and build a story around that.

Instead we get to see one of the best character driven stories in Halo, Reach, swapped for Spartans fighting 90% of the battles in no armor.

Halo 3 was some of the best VG trailers and marketing ever.

I don't even know what they are doing with this season. The first three episodes actually took the show nowhere except that the covenant might be here. The stuff with the doctors has added absolutely zero. My dad had this pomegranate tree. That's about it.

I wouldn't say I'm enjoying the "hell" out of it but it's more enjoyable than the first season by a good bit.

I fully expect a filler episode for the next two weeks but they didn't disappoint this week so maybe they'll surprise me.

Same.

I love the suits. I'm happy they're in them for some of the scenes but not all of them.

I'm also super excited that they're getting into Spartan backstory with Halsey. The games portrayed the Spartans as a lonely, somewhat mentally unstable super-soldier -- not robots. The show is following that theme.

The fight scenes in S2E4 were epic. Not sure I like where the end of E4 / beginning of E5 went, but I'm here for it.

Kwan is still "meh" to me, but she's got something coming, I just can't figure out what yet.

So much more I wanna say but don't wanna spoil it.

Is this based on some source material? Did I miss the part of the game where MC is betrayed by UNSC and Cortana is captured by the covenant?

I think adaptations have to fall within two distinct bands of deviation from the source material to be universally accepted and successful.

The first band is what you could call, "Inspired by," where everything is wildly different to the point of being almost completely original. Characters, places, names may be used, but storylines are nothing at all like the source. How To Train Your Dragon fits into this category, because if you read the books they're absolutely nothing like the movies or shows. The only similarities are in some of the characters and details.

The second band could be called, "As true as feasible," where everything matches as closely to the source material as possible. LOTR fits into this category, because for the most part it is very true to the books. There are certainly omissions and deviations, but those are mostly deemed acceptable because a movie can't flow or have the same exposition as a book. It's also limited by runtime. Shows have fewer issues, but they're also limited by to split stories into episodic pacing and runtime as well.

Adaptations in between tend to be received poorly, and I guess you could call this, "The Uncanny Valley of adaptations." This is where plot points and characters may be taken from the source material, but there are also major changes to things like characters' personality or motivations or relationships, added/omitted storylines and plot points, or major shifts in tone or theme. These are adaptations where the writers and/or producers are trying to make their version or vision of the original, but it's most often a tone deaf and self-aggrandizing venture that hijacks the original work and/or misses why people liked the original material in first place. The Hobbit and RoP fit here. The Hobbit was the fault of the studio putting undue requirements and timelines on production, which pushed it into the uncanny valley. The need to add a female character and stretch one book into three movies really killed it. RoP faced a lot of the same issues. It had character additions, added themes, and character changes that threw it into the uncanny valley and kind of made it a mess.

This adaptation of HALO seems to fall into the uncanny valley. It draws heavily from the source material for characters and plot, but it's also a huge departure in terms of changes to existing characters, added characters, and added plot points. For a lot of HALO fans, it really misses the mark on what made the original material great. Master Chief is the prime example. In the original material, he's mysterious, stoic, and dedicated to the mission. We don't know a lot about him and he does next to no emotion or attachment, so every tidbit we learn and every minor emotional interaction is more impactful. "I'm here to finish the fight," hits super hard at the end of HALO 2, and, "Wake me when you need me," hits hard at the end of HALO 3 because of this. It's a big part of what makes him so interesting. That's all gone in this adaptation and he's something completely different, much closer to a generic soldier who just happens to be really good at soldiery things.

That's fair. I was a huge fan of the Halo 3 at A&M, but don't really give a **** how close it stays to the original story. I would like to get back to Master Chief in the armor kicking covenent ass, but I'm sure we'll get there at some point.

What bothers me as much as just about anything in the show is how one needler spike blows up and kills people. That's completely unrealistic

Pretty decent last 4 episodes.

It's still far from what I was hoping before season 1 but better than I was expecting after it.

The light bridge and forerunner cavern was such a "wait a minute. I recognize that…" also finally getting to a Hall.

Still not enough MC, MCing but it's much better than S1. If they can have a great finale I'll actually root for S3.

Yeah the streaming companies overspent on exclusive shows and have taken a huge hit from it. There's no way this gets renewed.

I agree that I've enjoyed the last two episodes and the season overall, but the egregious error for this show is waiting so long to get to the halo. Now it'll be cancelled before they even get to the CE storyline
