Pretty awesome song choice of "Fire Woman" by The Cult there by whoever's running the music as this woman on fire seems ready to burn down the cult of Kier.

Quote:

Fire
Smoke, she is a rising fire
Smoke on the horizon

Filmed in Newfoundland - that place looks cold.

Any guesses on the inhaler drug? Byproduct from the factory that decimates towns in their wake? Cobel hadn't gotten high since she was eight! Sissy needs to chill get take a deep breath too. Looked like a pretty ****ty spot for coffee.

Im pretty sure it's ether.

It's definitely ether. Kier working in the ether mill as a child has been mentioned several times, including the painting where he met his wife. I just read a theory that ether exposure/addiction made him crazy and is basically what kickstarted everything

Clearly important to the story that we know Cobel invented severance, that she and Jame were likely close, and that the school fellowship is still ongoing (Ms Huong).

Still unclear why she is obsessed with reintegration and the potential for love transcending severance.

^ Unless someone important in the show that she loves is severed?

Episode probably ruled out a Russian/Soviet closed city

It doesn't seem like we discovered integral clues to the mystery in this one.

I think her ultimate dream was to be able to sever someone from certain memories or history in their brains but retain the good memories and relationships/love. She could sever her mother from her current experience at work, but she couldn't just relieve her of her past trauma, she'd lose every other thing from her past including memory/love of her daughter.

Just like she said to Mark when he asked if she wanted the door open or closed and her answer was "Both". She wants the best of both worlds; severing the bad and keeping the good.

I never like this theory, because the Lexington Letter was from Topeka, KS and the MDR scabs in S2E1 were from a different branch. I think Kier, PE is probably very isolated but not self-contained. I think they just invented a place to add mystery and keep people from having pre-conceived notions about it.

I have really enjoyed this show. Very original and creative.

Cobel is my least favorite part of it, and I didn't really enjoy spending this time with her. This episode had a gothic horror twist to it I just don't care for in general.

On to 9 and 10.

I liked that episode a lot. I've actually really liked the last two, but I'm ready to get back to our main characters.

So Cobel is definitely going to be working with Mark to get back at Lumon. I do wonder why Helena was so dismissive of Cobel previously, knowing all that she knows and is capable of? Maybe Helena doesn't know what Cobel invented the damn thing?
This is my biggest gripe of the season. I feel like we have not spent a lot of time with our main characters since the Ortbo or it has been the outside world. What is going on with the Innies?

I'm glad we finally got an episode that confirms Lumon is on the good side, as Harmony and Co. are clearly trying to steal the credit for themselves, instead of sharing Kier's glory with all.

Praise Kier.

Based off of the short conversation between Cobel and Devon, I got the impression that Devon has already been talking to Cobel about how to get him free. When Devon said, "We're going to try something else," it certainly gave the impression that Cobel was aware of what Devon and Mark had already tried.

Another small point was when Cobel first talks to coffee shop guy, she says that the town looks older, and he replies something to the affect of, "After the market correction, the town struggled." I'm pretty certain that there was some major event that caused the whole world to fall into a depression, and that's why Lumon thinks severance is so important. They want to use it so the whole world can get past their grief.

I didn't quite take it that way. I assumed he was parroting Lumon's reasons for shutting down their Salt's Neck factory. Just a bunch of corporate bull. Sounds pretty reminiscent of countless mills, factories, and offices that have shut down in the US for various companies for years IRL.

Except that the college town from last week also seems completely empty now. Maybe it's just because it is winter, but everything seems completely dead. The Lumon office is the most vibrant place.

Also, this episode made it apparent that Cobel created severance for deeply personal reasons. It wasn't a response to some global financial tragedy. Granted, Lumon could have seen an opportunity to address said tragedy, but that's not the impression I got.

Personally, I see that as more of a creative/production design choice. Basically, there's the world before Mark's tragedy (sunny and colorful) and the world after Mark's tragedy (cold, dead, and barren), but who knows…

Yes, Cobel clearly created it to deal with her own issues, but Lumon sees it as an opportunity for something bigger.

Possibly. I'm not discounting it. I just think the simplest answers are the more likely ones… that A) Lumon shut the factory down for the same, capitalistic reasons a million other corporations did/do the exact same thing, and B) everything is cold and dead simply because it's winter, and over the course of the show so far we've only been with these characters for less than two months, save for the Gemma flashbacks.

It's hard to square such a short amount of transpired show time with the real time gap of 3 years.

So the original plans for the severance procedure were handwritten in a spiral bound notebook and have been stored for the past 40-years in a dugout shed inside the internal void of a wooden bust of Keir?

Harmony Corbel could'a been a contender!

That shady bunch got a hold of her at a young age, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Don't Milkshake mention it has been five months when Mark rejoined the severed floor after the OTC event?

He also told them that they had been celebrated heroes and had a parade held in their honor. I wouldn't trust anything Milkshake tells the innies as reliable.

(Unless that happened in one of the outie scenes, it all blurs together after a few weeks)

Combined with Gemma and Marks grief over their lost child, this second tweet makes total sense. And Stiller confirming the other tweet about Cobels mom.

He did tell that to innie Mark, but from interactions with the real world we see that it's only been a couple of days.

Not the most exciting episode but I feel like we got some important backstory.

It also makes the conversation where Helena tells Cobel that she overestimated her contributions more wild.

I enjoyed the slower pace and the scenery of the episode. I am ready to get back to our innies though.

Any chance Cobel grovels back to the Eagans, begs forgiveness, and gets any type of job at Lumon that interacts with the severed floor? Would be fun to have her operating as a double agent and secretly partnering with a fully reintegrated Mark to burn the place down.

Corbel should call slippin' Jimmy. Bet he could squeeze a nice settlement out of Lumon.

Truth is we probably about a year or two away from being able to tell a AI app to render you your own personal crossover episode.
