Not sure if that's a compliment or an insult but I shall endeavor to enjoy either equally and not show preference to one over the other

More things I'm noticing on a re-watch binge:

- Probably obvious to everyone else the first time, but both versions of Mark use the phrase "He/she isn't dead, he/she just isn't here." Mark S uses it first after Irving is fired, and then Mark Scout uses it while holding a box of what he thought was Gemma's ashes after learning she's still alive. He's reintegrating at the time, so maybe it's just bleeding over from his innie, but maybe it's showing how they really are the same person inside as outside.

- I'm pretty sure the music playing at the Chinese restaurant where Helena stalks Mark is the same music that played at one of their office "socials." Helena trying to mess with Mark to see what memories or feelings are stirred up?

Milchik failed on his "use less complicated words" exercise. He should have stopped at "Grow up!" because grow doesn't have the same connotations as his original fancified sentence.

I'm wondering if there's going to be some underlying spy element to this show. The room costumes for Gemma, the international city names of the files, the weird Russian links (Tolstoy, Mark's watch, the snow suits, brutalist architecture, etc.). I just realized how part of the theme song sounds like a twisted version of the mission impossible theme.
I was about to comment how beneficial it would be to have sleeper agents who can be turned on and off...then I remembered that The Manchurian Candidate is already a thing.

Been saying for weeks they're in a Russian alt timeline.
I don't know if it's a timeline where Russia won, but I am starting to wonder if there was some sort of worldwide event, and somehow the town these people are in was spared. Maybe it was a nuclear event, or maybe an asteroid, or a Thanos snap. Something were most of the rest of the world is destroyed and Lumon will use Severance to help the people get past things. I don't know what it is, but something about the world they are in now seems like it's desolated. There is definitely some sort of major past event that we don't know about that is shaping everything.
So alternate timeline Silo?

A PEZ dispenser in the background of the season finale of Severance would cause a huge melt down. Would be epic.

I think it was just a generic smartphone that somewhat resembled an iPhone. I remember reading somewhere that this is one of the very few shows (maybe the only?) on Apple TV+ that does not have any Apple product placement. Seems like it was an intentional decision in keeping with the unknown element of the time period.
One theory i heard is that Apple is very aware of their phones in regards to bad guys/characters in shows and they don't want that negative side tied to their product. So with that logic, Devon could in fact be a bad person in this show that has yet to be revealed.

S2E6 Reghabi asks Mark if he remembers a black hallway (exports), presumably the one Irv remembers. There is even a scene during one of the skips that suggests mark is in exports.
Something interesting I saw about that is wondering WHY Irv would know that hallway, as that elevator would presumably only be seen by a manager who had sent someone down (since you'd only see the down arrow from the outside).

When combined with Burt's potential hidden history at Lumon that gets even more interesting. Was Irv a Lumon employee prior to this as well? Was he a non-severed manager who was severed for some reason? Do he and Burt have a history prior to when they met on the severed floor?

Milchick and Irv have a similar vocabulary. I wonder if they came from the same beginnings.

Favorite cobel line isn't really a line. She's in her house crying (sobbing loudly) and the doorbell rings and she stops and lifts her head and goes "huh?" like from a cartoon and it made me lose it.

This is very dumb but wouldn't surprise me one bit.

One can hope that Apple isn't dumb enough to force product advertising into this show. It would stick out like a sore thumb next to all of the Lumon branded stuff.

It would be oh so ironic of them, though. Apple and Lumon have a few things in common.

Cobel side quest confirmed. I think this episode is going to be very polarizing. Personally I liked it but it's quite a different feel from most of the rest of the series. Straight up psycho thriller on the Cape vibes.

A couple of huge reveals at the end!

I liked that episode a lot. I've actually really liked the last two, but I'm ready to get back to our main characters.

So Cobel is definitely going to be working with Mark to get back at Lumon. I do wonder why Helena was so dismissive of Cobel previously, knowing all that she knows and is capable of? Maybe Helena doesn't know what Cobel invented the damn thing?

Interesting twist at the end but I just thought the episode was incredibly boring. Probably my least favorite episode of the entire series. I just didn't need or care for this much Cobel.

I felt Arquette overacted a few scenes, which is odd because she's been great otherwise.. Some of her delivery was just a bit much but overall I still enjoyed the ep. even if not one my top few.

About 20 minutes in my wife said I'm glad we're figuring out what Cobel is doing but I hope this isn't the whole episode. We needed a backstory but it was so off from what all the other episodes have been it feels like a filler episode, while knowing it probably just kick started everything.

I enjoyed it because it gave some insight into the cult part of Lumon that they've teased previously. Agreed that the Cobel we've known up til now didn't necessarily deserve a full episode, but the reveal at the end made it worth it IMO. She's a key player now.

I also liked seeing a different setting and different, "normal" characters. They keep changing the setting to make it impossible to visualize where this takes place.

That said, it makes sense why this was the shortest episode we've had in a while. They clearly needed this episode to set up what's going to happen, and I think it would've been weird if this was spliced in with other goings on in the show.

Filmed in Newfoundland - that place looks cold.

Any guesses on the inhaler drug? Byproduct from the factory that decimates towns in their wake? Cobel hadn't gotten high since she was eight! Sissy needs to chill get take a deep breath too. Looked like a pretty ****ty spot for coffee.

I'm of two minds.

I didn't find the episode boring at all, I loved the vibe, I was compelled by everything that happened, and I once again thought it was beautifully shot.

That said… for a ten-episode season it should be illegal to have "side" episodes like this.

Back in the broadcast days of 24 episodes? Sure, go for it.

But not in this format, and especially not this late in the season, when we're frothing at the mouth for the final act/climax.

At least we A) had a hunch this would happen once we knew last week that the runtime was only 37 minutes, and B) know it's going to be balls to the wall now over these final two episodes.

Agreed. Thinking that, and seeing previously that she was essentially forced to get severed leads me to think she's not really a player on the Lumon side. That's been sort of hinted at with her having a crush on Mark. I'm curious to see who the real Lumon player is - Drummond seems like just a henchman.

Came here to post exactly the same sentiment. A fine episode, but when you're telling a 10 episode story each year, using one to only slightly advance one plot point and give some backstory is tough. Pretty much every episode this season has answered a ton of questions and at the same time left me with even more...this one not so much.

And for the rumors of 9&10 being long episodes, #9 clocks in at a measly 45 minutes (only this episode was shorter this season.) We'd better get a movie for the finale.

Interesting that this is the second location outside of Kier that we have seen, the other being Gantz College where Mark and Gemma taught. Both were in serious decline.

The one-off episode doesn't bother me. Season one was just nine episodes, so this season is basically the same with a bonus Cobel side quest.

I enjoyed the episode. It interesting to see a place where the Lumon believer was the pariah.

The ether vats are a key part of the kier narrative so it was cool to see that aspect of the company history as well.

Loved it. I think it's just easy to forget how weekly release episode mystery TV feels with the world today of binge watching and streaming. Everybody's edging to get answers to the last week's cliffhangers and their weekly fix.

I would much rather see the Cobel storyline in this tight single episode, rather than parsed out in small bits interjected into the other storylines in each episode.

I think when the season's done and we're finally smoking that cigarette, we'll look back on this one more favorably within the pacing of the season as a whole…
