The recap also confirms that Petey's reintegration was, in fact, a gradual process and not instantaneous, which is good to know, re: Mark's. I just wish they would have had Reghabi remind us of that last episode, with even a single, off-handed line, instead of expecting us to remember from three years ago.

Irving saying "Yes, do it, Seth" was peak Turturro. He deserves an award for that scene alone

Im more of the mind that they are not physical beings but planted/forced visions, as they weren't wearing similar winter gear in those tough conditions. I wonder if this is more of an indicator that Lumon has much more influence/control on the severed's brains through those chips than just flipping between innie & outie.

Maybe not everything they see or experience is physically real, but induced visions or augmented reality?

I'll check it out. I figure there's going to be a reason. But it seemed unrealistic that the innies didn't investigate or ask more questions. So many other times in the show they're faced with something strange (goats, dead animal, O&D's extra employees, etc) and they're extremely curious.

Side note: Maybe Helena set up the whole experience for herself to hook up with Mark. No cameras. Nice tent in the woods. (Serious/not serious)

So maybe one of those "clones" is what was following Mark in the hallways on the severed floor?

Some incredible Emmy Nomination stuff from this one.

  • Helena doing Helly at the campfire, making fun of the Dieter story and pissing off Milchick despite him being in on the subterfuge
  • Helly bringing Irving a "snow seal" to eat, Irving telling her to tell him what she saw, this incredibly tense eye contact, and then through just the subtlest of eyebrow lowers, Helena dropping the Helly facade for the briefest of moments
  • The entirety of Irving confronting Helena in the woods, starting with "Hey, kid" and then dragging her to the water, "Damnit, Seth! Do it!" "Yessssss! DO IT, SETHHHHH!", then his loving cuddle and apology to Helly after the switch, Milchick's sinister judgment and execution speech "There shall be no formal valediction, catered or otherwise", Dylan and Irving's strange and wonderful friendship on display as he screams "LEAVE HIM ALONE!", and Irving's resigned smile as Milchick tells him it will be as though he never existed.

Incredible suspense building through pacing from the director and writer, too. John Turturro and Britt Lower certainly deserve nominations for this one. Maybe Tramell Tillman, too.

I am not sure this got posted in this thread, but I love how Lumon trolls them at every opportunity.

From the break room in ep: 1

So, when Irv told Dylan to "Hang in There" last night, I think I litteraly lol'd

They (after a fashion) figured out how to recreate the Revenge of the Nerds rape scene in a way that passed muster for today's audience with the whole Helly/Helena thing.

I'm glad they went ahead and revealed it in episode 4 because, in the behind-the-scenes segment that aired at the end, Adam Scott made it sound like the audience wasn't supposed to be aware. But pretty much everyone already was. Would have sucked if that was meant to be some big reveal in the final episode that fell flat.

I love that thus far they're not being too precious with the questions or mysteries in this show. It's got momentum and they're pushing forward, firing off the Chekhov's guns and introducing new ones each episode instead of just saving everything for the season finale.

A theremin should be used for all fireside camp stories. Been going down a slight rabbit hole today…

I'm sure everyone caught this, but I found it interesting that the Outdoor Retreat Team Building Occurrence was called ORTBO, which is an anagram for "robot," and that word comes from the word "robota," which is an old slavic word that can mean "forced servitude" in certain contexts.

I thought that was interesting since all these folks are in forced servitude to Lumon, and we very well may have seen their robot clones on the cliffs and whatnot.

That's a great catch. But I hope that when Severance reaches its conclusion, the story won't have turned out to be a remake of Westworld.

I don't think they will, but I think it's West World adjacent in the context of "can consciousness create life." You have these people who are essentially robots in every philosophical meaning of the word. They have no rights and nothing but their labor, yet the ones enslaving them are themselves.

I've always thought it was fascinating that Mark got severed out of grief, but in doing so, he created Mark S., who is wholly free from that grief, but left himself without any distraction and only the grief. Was that a mercy to himself to give Mark S. peace, even if he doesn't get to experience that peace himself? Fascinating stuff.

There was a moment at 23:14 where Irving is questioning Helen. She has a confused look on her face with raised eyebrows. Then, for about a second and a half, she drops it for her full Helen look.

I very much said "oh, ****" involuntarily at that moment.

What an episode. Phenomenal acting.

So, was them showing the "robot clones" of themselves an intro into what they will explain Ms Casey to be?

Way too obvious helly is Helena, only thing that gives pause is they made it so obvious. No cameras/mics bc Helena is there. Only info she didn't get is Irv's info about Burt, which is an odd part of the story that I have no doubt will somehow be important. What happened to make Irv come back when he was determined to leave?

They're not gonna keep the same main narrative for another season with the gang vs lumen.

Bet Helena develops a thing for innie Mark. All kinds of juice there between Mark innie outtie, Casey, Helena, and the Eagans.

Seems too obvious to be the case but betting on this now including the Mark/Mark Helly/Helena Casey/Gemma love triangle.

Another tip off was Irv and Dylan were wanded by the security guard in the front while Helena was wanded with her back to the guard. Her body language also told the story.

Nails.

The love triangle or 6 way thing is gonna be real interesting, esp with Helena and helly fighting over the same mark innie.

Something big is coming with irv and Burt

Hopefully although their buttoned up first crush innies would have been mortified to hear it described as such.

So Irv's outie was brought back on line after he walked a few yards from everyone else. Surely he'd turn around and realize that Helly is Helena Eagen, right? Milchick telling him to walk into the woods was intentional as was the radio call. Did he walk much further or is there something there that's going to play into the next weeks?

Also, I can't imagine the mind**** for Helena. You're getting drowned, you tell Milchick to pull the plug and the next thing you know, you're back to normal life (presumably)
