This would be like me claiming Good Thing by Fine Young Cannibals as a one hit wonder.

Yeah if somebody claimed that, she would drive me crazy like no else.

Cracker: Low

Cracker is definitely not considered a 1-hit wonder. Get Off This & Teen Angst were chart toppers on the own right.

I just listened to those two songs and vaguely remember hearing Get Off This, but I've never heard Teen Angst. However, 99.5 KISS played Low all the time in the 90's. So to me they're a 1 hit wonder.

What is your take on the Toadies?

Edit: legitimately curious not a setup. Teen Angst was huge in early 90's. I had to look this up but it went to #1 on the US Modern Rock chart. I'm not from SA so I'm not sure what kind of station Kiss 99.5 was at the time.

At the time, KISS was a very well regarded "Active Rock" station, meaning that they played some 70s/80s gold (the big ones like Zeppelin, ac/DC, etc) and newer rock currents (90s) They did in fact play a lot of Cracker. Source: myself. I worked there in the late 90s. Probably the oddest song we had in a "gold" category was Modern English's "I Melt With you" which, yes, was a big hit back in the day but I always felt a song in that kind of new wave/post punk didn't really fit next to bands like Pink Floyd or Motley Crue and definitely not on a station where listeners would still regularly request Judas Priest and Budgie and reference SA legendary DJ "The Godfather" Joe Anthony.

Wow. Not kidding about I Melt With You. One of these things is not like the others….

Had KISS gone corporate when you worked there?

Yes, but Cox Media Group has traditionally let local programmers make the decisions on music, etc. Iheart stations are way more corporate driven, moreso than any other radio group. Most recently, the program director for KISS was also director of rock programming for all of CMG but he is leaving to take over WDRV in Chicago.

Active Rock as a format is kind of on life support and has been for a while. While KISS was legendary for a long time, the demise of rock radio hit them hard and they basically stopped playing much of anything new and they tightened up their "gold" playlist around that 90s/00s sound, so for me if/when I listen to the station, it feels like I never left.

Clear Channel can kiss my ass. Still pissed that in the early 00's they killed Rock 101 in Houston. One of the oldest if not the oldest rock station in Texas. Changed it to a "cutting edge Spanglish station with a modern urban sound" or some crap like that. A friend of a friend sent me an internal Clear Channel email with some mid level manager all proud of themselves announcing the change. Listened to 94.5 The Buzz for a while but it too started changing. A few years later I bought a car with a free Sirius XM trial and within a couple of months bought the lifetime subscription and never looked back.
Ozzys Boneyard, Lithium, and First Wave are the main rotation.

It was there long enough for my dad and I to both hear Led Zeppelin for the first time on it. R.I.P.

A Cheap Trick song came on my stream earlier today and I remembered the first time I saw them at a KLOL Rock N Roll Auction at the Summit. One of my first real "big" rock concerts in high school. Probably at least once a week, something makes me hate whoever was responsible for killing KLOL.

Btw, saw Outlaw Dave a couple weeks ago. He's still Outlaw Dave, but with a slightly better haircut and talking about his teenage kids hating him.

I remember when they took KLOL down. Sad day. So many of those rock stations that were pretty legendary in the 80s/90s are no longer around...flipped like Iheart did. Or sold off entirely...WAAF and WBCN/Boston, WCCC/Hartford among others like KLOL that just disappeared.

As for myself I stick to sxm and usually it's some combo of lithium, 1st wave, Ozzys boneyard, Rockbar, Pearl Jam radio for me. LL Cool J's channel is pretty great. RRHOF radio is pretty good, I like Little Steven's Underground Garage as well.

Your old buddy Outlaw Dave: "Here at Rock 101 we don't play Brittney Spears…..but we'd do her!"
Don't think you can get away with that today.

Also liked Chuck Schramack (not sure I have that last name exactly right). He did news or traffic but I remember him because he'd talk about the airplane con trails and the conspiracy those are really the govt releasing mind control chemicals over the population.

Chuck was great. He definitely wore a tin foil hat.

Also, "I'm Kevin and I just don't know anymore." Loved that guy.

Tito Smallberries went to my high school. He had major health issues before he died. Major.

That's awesome! Totally takes me back to my commute home from work in late 90's. "this buds for you….it's almost 4:20." The 5 o'clock traffic jam. The Friday Song! Friday, Friday, Friday!

Then go straight into Enter Sandman or something.

Was in Austin from mid 90s to early 00s. This was my favorite radio station anywhere I've lived. I wonder if they still play Soulhat's "Bonecrusher" every Friday at 5pm.

It is a great station. Used to stream it at work years ago. They'd always be good for the occasional Big Head Todd and the Monsters song.

I'm almost positive they still do it. As in I've heard them still playing it in the past two or three years, but I haven't listened any more recently to verify.

I kinda got bored with them...they seemed to stick very close to the classic rock playlist which was boring as **** to me. I get it, they tried to cleave a nice line between KLBJ holding onto the older stuff and 101x getting the newer stuff but I couldn't stand the DJs on 101x even thought I liked the music more. I had no opinion on KLBJ personalities once LA Lloyd became PD. Dudley & Bob were still good to listen to while I lived in Austin. The rest of the air staff was a total yawn. Reminds me of Handsome Dan from Wayne's World. Just stupid generic classic rock schtick. I'd rather turn the radio off.

Toadies, not one hit wonders. I remember quite a few of their songs being played on the radio.

I guess the other poster summed up 99.5 KISS pretty well.

Spacehog is the best answer for this thread, and those guys had a career of 5 good albums. Should have been bigger. Guitarist is a good actor - just played Edmund Burke.

The criteria should be literal: one hit. I recommend some posters return to their post to edit.
