I've enjoyed the hell out of it, and the PoC characters - notably the Dwarf wife and the Ranger-esque elf have been some of my favorite characters. My daughter and I watched the 3 Hobbits in 2021 and the 3 LOTR movies in 2021-2022, and it's such a treat to watch these with her and have her be into them and slowly learning the history, and recognizing small references to the previous films. Never in my dreams of being a dad did I envision explaining to a 10 year old what the Simarils are.
It's exciting to see the Elf and Dwarf cultures at these pinnacles of achievement. You think about the LOTR Elves - incredible places to live, but all hidden away, and the dwarves had lost Moria and the Lonely Mountain both. What an incredible job recreating Khazad Dun - which every movie fan hears and thinks "Don't go in there!" and then it's revealed so gloriously.
Is The Stranger Sauron? Gandalf? Saruman? Glorfindel? They're definitely selling the casual fan hardcore on the Gandalf connections, which hopefully means it's a double-fake. The show has a lot of interesting characters. We only know the motivations of a few for now.
My kid loves the Harfoots, as you would expect a kid to. But what is Nori if not the type of character we all fall in love with as a kid - young, not taken seriously, wanting to explore the world - she's just another endless incarnation of Bilbo and Luke Skywalker and every other hero who's wanted to see what laid outside the edge of their home, and winds up falling into an adventure.
