RIP, Deputy Dan. Get's blasted on the prairie and they leave his body for the vultures. He deserved better.

I didn't understand why Rainwater was not tried for this death.
I agree. You would think that the hard a@@ chick Sheriff would want to hold Rainwater accountable for killing her Deputy?
It's an interesting situation. In the past, we've heard stories of someone who has admitted to shooting the sheriff, but firmly maintained that he did not shoot the deputy. Yet, the authorities wanted to bring him in for the killing of the deputy. In this case, you have someone who did not shoot the sheriff, even though presented with the opportunity, and then openly, in front of a number of people, DID in fact shoot the deputy. And yet, they let her go.

I'd like to see Bob Marley or Eric Clapton explain this one.

I think she didn't take in Rainwater because she was telling the deputy to stand down but he continued to shoot at Rainwater in self defense. Then Rainwater shot him because he had already killed her horse.

Not really a good reason but that is what I thought of that particular scene.

Fan theory, based on no actual intel but....

In the very last few scenes Elsa from 1883 is explaining how Spencer lived out the rest of his life, she said that he "took the comfort of a widow, and made another boy, but refused to marry her"....

That boys lineage either becomes Jamey Dutton, or Rip.

Hope it's not Rip. Otherwise, Sheridan is not only into S&M. He's also into incest....

Fair, and I did think of that, but it would also jibe with Beth not being able to reproduce.....which I'm sure everyone is secretly glad of.

It also fits with the "sins of the father" thread that goes through the Yellowstone universe on occasion.

The same basic idea popped into my head yesterday, but only regarding Jamie's lineage. I vaguely remember Jamie's biological dad saying a bunch of stuff to Jamie about seizing his birthright or something along those lines.

Season 1 goes into how John found Rip. He had just murdered his Mom's abuser and was hiding out in another ranchers hay barn. John found him and then had him get the brand.
I would assume that John would know about the son that Spencer had with the Widow. If it was Rip, why would he let him court his daughter?

I have a few observations, but will focus on Jack here

Regarding Jack… His death was exactly correct.
He had a lot of will, and he desired to be tough and a man throughout the series, but even Banner knew that the boy was lacking (just like his own son by the way ) And that's where the matriarch says… "Not that one… " referring to Spencer

Jack could not smell out that these guys were not safe… He was too nice and got the death that comes to people like that in those days

They also made him wear those sheep covered legs to further expose the difference between him and the other Cowboys - he tried his best, but he just wasn't ever going to survive those very tough days

It has sort of been said, and I have read about it quite a bit… But Whitfield and his graphic sexual scenes really destroyed this season for me

I would give the series an A, but I can't recommend it because I know that there's not just one scene like there was last season, but there are several… So how can I tell my kids or friends that they should watch this show?

It's really disappointing… Not only because it's cringe, and is not just three or four seconds of screen time , but because it eliminates so many people from being able to watch it

Not only that, but his death wasn't commensurate with his level of evil. If he had a big, dramatic death it might have paid off even a little but nope....

My favorite thing about this series is the actors that they chose - they were just perfect for the role

Top 3 for me:

- Aunt Cara - she's the central character IMO - just the best

- Alexandra - like Elsa in 1883, so good

- Banner - what an amazing final episode for him. He's perfect as a bad guy "and you're no god Jacob Dutton!' But his change in the final episode and monologue- and his death - just wow.. so well written and acted

Bonus

- Harrison Ford was great and picked up a little where Kevin Costner left off. Great job.
- Spencer was perfect too
- Teona was just amazing with how much pain she endured
- Whitfield - perfect casting of the ultimate villain
- Father Renaud - his final scene and death was amazing and perfect
- Marshal Kent - perfect acting
- the Nuns last season - so good
- the female Sheriff- she was a woman doing a man's job at the time.. not a woman playing a man's role - Sheridan did great choosing her and she was awesome too

The female sheriff was played by the gal who was Deborah, the sister in Morgan. I kept looking at her and knew I knew the face until finally her voice gave it away. Then I kept waiting for her to drop multiple f bombs.

I just finished 1883. Like 1923, it didn't just grab me from the word go, but it did enough to keep me going. And like 1923, I am glad I stuck around. While I liked the cast of 1923 better, 1883 was the better show.. Elsa starts out as an annoying blonde but ends up being the strongest character of both these shows. Like 1923, when 1883 ended, I wanted more.

Sheridan is a good writer, but I actually enjoy his geographic accuracy more than anything.

As someone from the Texas Panhandle and very familiar with it's geography, it's nice to actually see it represented accurately on the screen as opposed to the typical Southern California trying to be passed off for it.

Some of the Dixon Creek 6666 scenes in the last season of Yellowstone and this season in 1923 were filmed very very close to where I grew up, and you could tell by the scenery.

Yes!

I've recently watched both 1883 and 1923 for the first time. While I enjoyed the series for the characters and stories quite well, it was the scenery that really got me. I could sit and just stare at many of the vistas he casually threw in there. As a native Houstonian, we only get hills and even mountains from photos, movies, or traveling to places where that stuff actually exists.

I wonder if Sheridan would be interested in re-making Uncommon Valor just for the opportunity to remove that hilariously awful opening shot, with operators practicing on a beach with the words "North of Galveston, Texas" on the screen and mountains in the background?

This is a huge part of movies like Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River to me. The scenery and cinematography is often breath taking. Even in some of the more urban scenes, but ESPECIALLY in the rural ones. He makes places, some of which aren't really even all that special, look majestic.

There was a lot of eastern NM in Hell or High Water.

Or that History channel show about the Texas Revolution that had Gonzales on the side of a cliff somewhere, amongst many other horrible inaccuracies.

Yep, visually, most of Eastern NM is a very plain and boring landscape IRL. But he makes the most of it in that movie.
