I missed Gaga so I had to go back and watch. She really brought it, not surprisingly.

Pretty strong bounce back for the Oscars after last year's debacle.
I caught that on youtube, that was very nice, & had a genuine/raw feel to it.

JLC's performance was definitely the least deserving, but still, yeah, one of your "duties" as a nominated actor is to at least pretend (aka "act") like you're happy for your fellow nominee should you lose. That, and considering Bassett is wealthy, world famous, and revered, a little perspective/humility couldn't hurt either. Sorry you didn't win a trophy and that you have to go back to your incredible, Oscar-less life.

This. Her reaction is the sort of reaction you see from an entitled person who can't even pretend to be happy for someone else's first Oscar.

Just look at how gracious Butler was, smiling and clapping for Brendan.

Nobody "owes" you an Oscar. And JLC has been a Hollywood legend for over 40 years.

Also, Blanchett immediately stood up to clap for Michelle Yeoh.

That's how you do it.

The only nominee who didn't seem insanely excited for Michelle Yeoh was Michelle Williams.

But as my wife said, that's just kind of her face.

Congrats to Fraser. Seems like the writing was on the wall for a lot of the big awards early this year.

I knew the Oscars were on but didn't watch as we had family in town with limited time to see each other. Also, we're just not as big into the awards shows with how they can drag out and how they….go off topic. Good to read this thread and see positive reviews for this year's show.

Mee-Yeoh wins as expected.
Is that movie any good? My daughter wants to see it.

I turned it off midway through the first time I saw it because it was way too bizarro for me.

Recently I gave it a second chance, and now fully appreciate the crazy-ish originality and innovation. A lot of directors and writers would have played it safe, but hell no not this one. The script should have been laughed out of most studios, and any slight change in direction would have made the movie a laughingstock, but they mostly pulled it off.

It also has a surprisingly humane and very moving/uplifting message, regardless of culture, if you watch til the end. Especially for the many of us married people going through midlife, well, stuff.

Jamie Lee!
One of those classic lifetime achievement awards from the Academy. Happy for her.

To be fair, Jamie Lee Curtis was absolutely amazing in Everywhere something something.

I thought every single time she was on camera she stole the scene. She played that seemingly obsessed IRA agent going through a rough day just right, not too crazy, no too boring. From her clothes and hair down to her expression and attitude.

Very well deserved.

Overall l thought it was a really solid awards show. There were some moments I didn't care for, but my overall impression was positive. I don't know if JLC's performance was or wasn't the best in the category to be honest, I don't have any issue with her winning though. I do think that the fact she was in a movie that was so positively received lifted her up. Comparatively Angela Bassett was in a worse movie that garnered her nomination. Wakanda Forever just isn't very good, and it's a comic book movie to boot, two strikes against her, even if it had nothing to do with her performance, which I thought was great. I didn't care for JLC's speech though, it was the weakest of the acting winners, she was really patting herself on the back with that one.

She thanked everyone that has ever helped her career and used "We" throughout. I think you watched a different speech

11, for The Turning Point (1977) and The Color Purple (1985).

I thought this was a good tack back to the middle (politically) for the Oscars. Kimmel is a partisan hack but was pretty good on the whole.

I will continue to watch if they are going to stay on a more apolitical track like last night. I'm not looking for political free or no digs at my side; I just don't want to be punched in the face over and over by a bunch of elitist Dbags who don't live in the real world.

Win your award, be graceful, be happy, let's have some jokes at everyone's expense and then we all move on.

Thanks I don't even know what the Turning Point is but I was only 3 back then. Didn't know the Turning Point got skunked.

I get that the style of Elvis and Hanks' accent put a lot of people off, but Butler was incredible.

Yeah I actually thought hers was the best. It was basically naming everyone she knew and saying that award was theirs too. Thought it showed a lot of humility.

As for her winning, it was a lifetime achievement award, with no one else in the category really that great. And in a movie that was much better received than Basett's.

She thanked all her genre fans. I felt personally thanked as a massive Halloween fan.

Agree with your wife. Seen Michelle Williams enough to know that she just doesnt ever seem happy or excited about much of anything. Heath Ledger coulda walked out on that stage last night and announced he hoaxed his own death and she woulda still had a blank look on her face.

Is everyone getting listed as an Oscar winner for best supporting actress and each getting to keep the trophy for a week? If not, then we all did not just win an Oscar

In hindsight, I'm surprised she didn't get nominated for A Fish Called Wanda, she's hilarious and very sexy in that movie. It's so underrated, you have 2 absolute comic geniuses in Michael Palin and John Cleese and two formerly serious actors - JLC and Kevin Kline - stealing scene after scene. I'd throw it out there that it's one of the greatest 4-person comedies of all-time.

Kevin Kline as Otto is one of my favorite movie performances ever. Hope you enjoy it and report back soon.
