Forrest Gump.

But it wasn't supposed to be a blockbuster.

Yeah, I think of that as more of a sweeping drama with special effects. I guess I'm talking more about action blockbusters.

Other notable names who have "snubbed" the Oscars-

Elizabeth Taylor
Marlon Brando
Katherine Hepburn
George C Scott
Paul Newman
Peter O'Toole
Woody Allen

The Porkchop Express

Well that explains why Independence Day got snubbed in 96.

Titanic? Biggest movie of all time when it won.

That's more of a romantic drama with action, but sure. I'm talking less about how much money something made, though, and more about blockbusters that are akin to TG:M - pure action blockbusters, superhero movies, sci-fi, fantasy, etc.

I've always wondered how close Avatar came in 2009. It felt like it had a legitimate chance that year, but of course they went with the Hurt Locker as it's much more Oscar bait-y.

I bet it's come the closest for sure, and was a pretty thin margin.

I thought a blockbuster meant highest grossing. Like the line goes around the block.

Looking at IMDB, crazy to find out the directors for the "Turn Down for What" music video just won a bunch of Oscars for EEAAO.

I don't know how else to say it… again, ACTION, SUPERHERO, SCI-FI, FANTASY etc blockbusters, in the vein of TG:M. I'm not just talking "highest grossing."

I know it's old news, how did CODA when best picture in 2022.

I watched the movie, it was nothing special.

Also I remember being blown away when I saw it, very unique at that time. Just a lot of different components coming together to create an original, very well crafted, heart tugging storyline.

I thought Dune deserved best picture as well. Sure it's a blockbuster sci-fi action movie, but not just.

Had a ton of interesting artistic elements, the atmosphere and cinematography was supreme. Did not feel at all like your usual big budget action flick.

My HSO is that I no longer think the FX award is relevant. At this point, anything can be done with a computer. Anything.

Show me practical effects. I'm willing to bet there are now fewer people with the skill set to pull off incredible physical or practical effects than CGI.

The practical stuff has to be approaching a lost art at this point with our incessant need to do everything with computers. I'm way more impressed with someone who can do practical stuff vs the dork sitting at a computer programming some stuff.

Blockbuster is the old movie rental place?

I'm kidding.

Carry on wayward son.

Yes! That's part of why I hated Elvis. Everything looked so ******* fake.

Elvis looked like a Star Wars prequel from the early '00s. So much fake, digital, green screen crap. Still can't believe it was nominated for Best Cinematography.

I liked Coda, but yeah, Dune was the movie of the year and far more deserving. Maybe Part Two will have a better shot...

They may get the LOTR treatment if it's as good or better than part one.
