VFX is for how good the CGI looks. But the sets, costumes, and the cinematography are all still eligible for their own awards, even if everything is CGI.

It was all very heavy handed. When Erich Maria Remarque wrote the novel on which the multiple versions of the film were based, followed shortly by the 1930 Best Picture winner, the dramatic depiction of the pointlessness of war was very timely.

Nowadays you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would argue that World War I was a good idea.

In case you didn't get that, though, at every dramatic moment the score is there to help you out with Duh-DUH-duh!!!
