That's good to hear, at least.

I just hate that, big picture, 2+ years from now, at the end of season three the overall plot will have hardly advanced. Hopefully they at least tell the Abby side of things relatively quickly (in three or so episodes), to where we're caught up with the bullet-fire cliffhanger moment mid-season-ish, instead of the end of the season. That way they can at least advance the overall plot in the second half of season three.

I decided last week I'm going to play the games rather than waiting 2+ more years to finish the story. (Now that they've extended it to 4 seasons.)

Yeah, my son and I (who both loved the first game) started this season hopeful that it would be as decent as Season 1. But after 2-3 episodes of this season we ended up basically hate-watching the rest of it out of morbid curiosity because we had already invested time.

But I think I'm done. I'm gonna buy the game at some point and play it (even Season 1 was 10 times better played as a game than watched as a tv show), but I'm not watching however many more seasons HBO cash-grab-drags this out for. Its lead by a bad actress who was wrong all along for the part and is physically incapable of showing nuanced emotions -"YOU CAN TELL I'M ANGRY BECAUSE I'M YELLING!". There's a lot of comically bad writing ("I'm gonna be a dad?!") with absurd amounts of convenient plot armor. The story-telling is so clunky and amateurish. And finally, the two lead characters dynamic is straight out of a CW show, which holds no interest for me.

I'm inclined to just read a summary of the rest of the game at this point. I really liked parts of this seasons, at times more than most, but as of now I have little desire to keep watching. The bleakest, most depressing **** + utterly baffling storytelling choices = me looking for any excuse to bail.

This framework worked really well in a video game medium. I am baffled they went this way for a tv show. It never truly clicked for me this was how they would handle it until we saw Safeco Field

I wouldn't say I'm hate watching this show, certainly nothing compared to watching the Acolyte, I just hate everything about the Ellie character. An emergency c-section is a lot to ask of anyone but I assume there is a lot of animal husbandry going on in Jackson and I wish Ellie had at least tried, she didn't have to be successful, but just make an attempt.

Also, two years until S3!? Are they at least filming S3 and S4 simultaneously?

I think part of the plot armor and other complaints might be a part of adapting a video game. In a video game you play as one, or two POV characters. All the info you learn you learn when that character does. So Ellie's short trip to Scar Island was put there to show us that WLF was invading it. If this was a non video game show we might know a Scar character's name and learn that info through them. Instead we have to learn it through Ellie because that's how you have to learn it in a video game

Also, a video game protagonist of course has plot armor. The user is controlling the character though crazy scenarios and the only point is to survive them. In a non video game show there would be some redshirts with Ellie who would end up meeting their end to give the illusion of stakes.

Hopefully the Abby POV is just one episode. Not great, but I don't think it's that bad as long as they get back to this juncture quickly

Seems like aiming to make her a compelling character. But hard to tell a story when the entire audience knows there is a specific juncture it's headed for.

Well I dropped out after episode 2... but kept reading here just to see if it got better and I missed anything. Sounds like I made the right choice.

I think it's been fine. I agree with a lot of the criticisms, but when you boil it down to one question: is it still an entertaining story to follow? I think it is. It's got plenty of issues, but I don't regret staying with it at all

You are correct, you haven't missed much. I think Abby's portion will be way more interesting but I'm not holding breath with the writers.

I'd recommend you go watch season 2 episode 6 if you were a big fan of season 1.

That was honestly a terrible episode of television. Ellie has to be the most unlikeable protagonist in all of recent television. It is equal parts Mazin/Druckmann's writing of her character and Bella's actual performance. With the exception of two episodes, this season has been a complete letdown.

Agree

Total waste of time

Disjointed

bad acting

This episode made some of the other average ones seem better just bc it was so bad.

Every turn was like "Squirrel!"

But like every step was an uglier squirrel.

It being a season finally, OK, way to go out on a high note.

Similar feelings here, I think many forget how bad a lot of shows and especially game adaptations really are. This season hasn't been as good as s1, which was exceptional, but still a fun enough watch.

And at least some of the admittedly fair criticisms can be attributed to the fact that there are things inserted to keep it true to the game or hit certain story points.

Yeah, hard to figure how much is writing vs Bella. I actually think it's more the writing, although I'm still not a fan of her casting. A major issue is that they make her so nonsensically bullheaded and stubborn. I'm not sure anyone's acting could salvage it. Take this episode for instance when she wants to save the cornered guy - I think they want the audience to at least consider there is something noble about her wanting to do it. But it plays out as just stubborn and moronic and makes her less likable.

Maybe Bella just sucks at the scenes that are supposed to make her more likable, but I think a major issue is there's just not enough of that written in to begin with. I think the biggest help could have been making her a bit more funny in a likable way, not 100% cynical bich humor all the time. She needed to be tough with a touch of humanistic humor. Instead it's all just stubborn and bratty

Overall, I enjoyed it. The scenes on the boat were ridiculous. I'm also going to watch a play through on YouTube because I'm impatient.

It's both. Sometimes eyerollingly bad writing being acted out by someone with absolutely zero subtlety in her emoting.

Yeah, the writing does not make sense (and I have no idea if it's true to the game or not) but Ellie wanting to save the scar kid but not wanting to help Tommy made zero sense to me other than to show her blind need for revenge. The choices she makes are just so counterintuitive for someone who has grown up since birth in the post apocalypse.

That stunk. Not a good episode of TV, and I don't really see a reason to keep watching. I'll check out the video game's wiki for the rest of the story.

Ellie swimming half a mile in a storm with a huge backpack on was hilarious. Just don't show us that - it's silly!

The entire boat wreck and island with the Scars could have been clipped out and it would not have made any difference to the story. Just makes no sense. And then they decide to leave her there when they could have gutted her just as quickly. I'm guessing there was more to it but maybe they just edited all out?

Also why was Isaac so sure he was going to die on this attack on the scars? It seems like the WLF would mow over them with overwhelming firepower.

Haven't caught up to the lastest episodes, but what the **** is this show?

Killing the main character, 50% non hot lesbo sex....

Woke for wokesake.

I had to go and pray after the sins I watched in that show.

Critical Drinker has a good youtube channel where he rips this ridiculous show apart. We watched it to its end only because we had already invested the time in previous episodes. The show is ridiculous, and the messaging is over the top "girl power" nonsense. Every military leader in this show is a woman. Small, feeble women are overpowering their male counterparts. It's really ridiculous and asks of the viewer too much.

This is dystopian sci-fi, not science realism. A woman leading a group of men or overpowering a man in a fictional show doesn't affect what happens in the real world. Issac will now burn your hand and/or genitals with France's finest cookware for calling him a woman.

If this is your biggest issue with this show, then you may want to rethink your priorities in life.

Edit: It's safe to assume you never served in the military, right?
