Late to the party on this... but don't care.

Watched it yesterday with the family.

That's the very definition of what a summer blockbuster movie should be. Delivered in every way. Visuals were incredible and one of the best soundtracks ever.

Definitely will catch a second viewing in the theaters before it's run is over.

I want to know what card was in his pocket?? Seven of spades???

Why?

Because he looked at it and smiled. He draws them blind and puts them in the pocket before the race. Was he lucky and get the 7 of spades?

I was asking why 7 of spades.

I didn't realize there was such a market for popcorn buckets. I just looked at the prices online and they 5x the amount for what I paid at AMC. Guess I shouldn't have filled it with popcorn already. Oh well, I needed a new bucket for the house!

You should have to uber home or wait an hour to drive after you see this movie. How many idiots think they're Sonny Hayes on the drive home. I know I did. So dangerous.

Watched it today. So good. Race scenes were tense. Heck, his training lap was tense. Visuals were great.

If you are on the fence, go watch it in the theater.

If you have never heard of this movie, go watch it in the theater.

As an F1 fan, the plot is so utterly ridiculous.

-plenty of other drivers are available in lower ranks or even journeymen in their 30s

-wrecking other cars to advance your team mate would absolutely draw the attention of the stewards and likely earn you a race ban.

-I don't think Sonny even has enough points for a super license

-trying to score just a point would have been difficult enough but a race win is an impossible goal for a bottom field team

None of that actually matters because that was just a fun movie with great action shots and incredible sound. It was worth seeing in IMAX. My only regret is that I tried so hard to get a popcorn bucket and they were sold out everywhere.

I saw it today with my son and his friend. We all thought it was great, though it is long.
Will likely go back to catch in IMAX in August with the wife.

Ok, so after seeing that news that they are re-releasing it in IMAX in August, I have a question for you guys who study the business and box office trends way more than I do....

Does a movie like F1 absolutely need to be released in the summer to be as successful as it was?

I ask because its not geared towards kids, nor even really teens. I'm sure there were teens that went with their parents. But my sixteen year old son had zero interest in seeing it, and I'm just assuming the vast majority of the audience was adult. So its not a movie that benefits from school being out.

And I've been thinking about how many movies were released this summer. Every 1 or 2 weeks a new blockbuster was released, eating into each others box office. I know that I've spent a lot of time at the theater this year so far, but that's uncommon amongst the general public IMO. Parents will often make the choice to see the kid's movies in the theater and just watch the adult movies at home a few months later.

Am I wrong for thinking with the reviews and word of mouth it got that F1 could have done as good, if not even possibly better, if it was released just slightly outside of the summer blockbuster season so that it could continue a nice run without having Jurassic Park and Superman and other movies eating into it?

The August rerelease has almost everything to do with availability - when there was a free week that IMAX didn't already have a deal with another studio, which usually only comes around two or three times a year, and only for a week or two each time, if that.

As for its initial summer release, it's kind of a pick-your-poison situation. Hold it and release in the fall/early winter and you're up against football every weekend, parents caught up in their kid's school activities, all the film festivals, Oscar bait, etc. Release in the spring and you're competing with spring break for a good six weeks or so. It also depends on what else the studio (Warner Bros in this case, in terms of distribution) has on their slate. With Sinners in April and Superman in July, slotting F1 in June simply made the most sense. It also had a pretty charitable summer window, all things considered. It only had to compete with 28 Years Later from the weekend prior, and managed to have an exclusive on IMAX screens over Jurassic Park Rebirth, when that premiered. Not to mention, it had all of the July 4th holiday week/weekend to compete, and it did great numbers over that time period as well.

All things considered, I don't think it would have performed any better releasing any other time of year. It's a big, expensive blockbuster that simply feels like a big, summer movie and, if anything, I imagine Warner Bros (and Apple) wanted to honor that vibe.

It will also go to Apple TV Plus late this fall, which is a great marketing tool for them, as they have US Streaming rights for Formula 1 starting in 2026. So the timing of the release works out nicely for them.

Seriously? ESPN is losing the rights...I'm going to have to sign up for another monthly sub?? Good gosh almighty.

Your last sentence nails it, this is just like the perfect summer movie.

It's big and loud and fun and beautifully shot, exactly what you want for a fun June/July popcorn movie.

Honestly worth it, show for show AppleTV+ has some of the best content out there.

I am curious how they'll handle it, whether they'll wrap it into the standard AppleTV+ subscription or do something like they do with Major League Soccer where it's a standalone package you pay for.

As long as they don'tess.woth F1 TV . It has its faults but I really like the broadcast team, the different views, and ability to watch F1 Academy, F2, F3, etc.

Recent article about the US rights. Not saying a done deal, but sounds like ESPN wouldn't increase and Apple did.

I like Apple+, and I dont mind signing up for a month or two and binging some shows. But I hate having to sign up for a dozen different services to watch the content I want to see.

It's part of the reason I dont really watch many MLS games, and dont keep up with it like I used to. The money was good for the owners, but I'm not sure it's helped grow the sport. If it's on, I'll tune in, but I'm not going to go out of my way to watch it, and I love watching soccer. I see more EPL games on TV than anything else, because it's there.

F1 has been growing in the States, but it's still a fringe sport for most people. I'm not sure putting it on a single streaming service, rather than ESPN that's more readily available will help it's growth.
fig96

Don't disagree with any of that.

I don't know that I'd pay for the MLS access if I didn't already follow a team, and I have to think that'll be even less for F1 when not as many people here follow the sport.

Yep. That stinks, because it was becoming so much more popular here.

Guys like my dad, who sit down and watch NASCAR every Sunday of his life, started watching F1 recently...for no other reason than he caught a couple races on ABC last year and got interested.

He's already had to switch to Prime Video for NASCAR (which he already had through Amazon)...but there is no way he's going to pay for Apple+ for F1.

Growth comes through exposure.

Listen here now!

Don't do it!

Don't you launch into an explanation of how this movie isn't really a success but rather a financial disaster, based on the budget, projections, overseas versus domestic box office, failure to reach $1billion net revenue, etc.

This board only has room for one Hollywood financial expert debbie downer, and that spot's taken!

I talked to many fans and some people in F1A in Zandvoort last weekend and legit couldn't find a single person that liked the film. Some didn't say "I hated it" but nobody said they liked it. Nobody wearing APX merch either.

I can see the Austin and Vegas crowds being a complete 360 from Europe tho.

Watched it last night. No real F1 fanship or knowledge so all of the racing intricacies and rules were totally foreign to me. But wife and I both really enjoyed it.
