The trailer is okay. It doesn't make me want to buy advanced tickets, but it also doesn't make me want to skip it. I have not read the book, nor am I likely ever to. I expect this to be more of an inspired by take rather than an adaptation. I will just take it as a fantasy movie.

With all of that, for me Christopher Nolan has earned the benefit of the doubt. I don't care who he cast with American accents, or armor or dialogue choices. If The Odyssey entertains me, then Nolan will have done what I need him to do with his movies.

But I still want Nolan's take on Blue Thunder.

If Ellen Page is in this as Achilles and Kendrick Lamar is showing up, who's to say Odysseus doesn't end up flying Blue Thunder to fight the cyclops?

Do they really have a trans playing Achilles?

I'd watch that movie twice on opening day.

it's right in line with my time-traveling movie idea when you find out that the real reason Texas defeated Mexico in 18 minutes at San Jacinto it because the Battleship Texas time-traveled back to 1836 and was waiting for Santa Anna.

I taught the Odyssey to ninth graders for about 10 years.

This version doesn't look too bad at all.

I note that it even includes Odysseus' dog Argos, which is one of my favorite parts.

As Odysseus is approaching his home on his return to Ithaca, he is in disguise and cannot reveal himself, even as he comes upon the faithful dog he had left behind, a puppy then, now an elderly dog.

Quote:

As they were speaking, a dog that had been lying asleep on a large pile of mule and cow dung raised his head and p r i c k e d up his ears. This was Argos, whom Odysseus had bred before setting out for Troy but had left behind without ever being able to enjoy taking him on a hunt.

As soon as Argos saw Odysseus standing there, he dropped his ears and wagged his tail, but he was too old and tired to rise and run to his master. When Odysseus saw the dog on the other side of the yard, he dashed a tear from his eyes so his companion would not notice it, and followed his companion into the house.

But Argos passed into the darkness of death, now that he had fulfilled his destiny of faith and seen his master once more after twenty years.

Kind of surprised Nolan didn't cast a cat to play the dog, just to **** around. You know how cats can get about representation.

At this point, nothing but speculation and stupid Reddit guessing.

So when is Peter Dinklage set to play Manute Bol in his biopic?

It won't be scenes of Manute playing the game. It is just locker room scenes of Manute in a towel.

Manute's grandfather, chief of their village in Sudan, was 7 foot 10.

I'm not sure that Page will be playing Achilles (the casting would be absurdly off). I'm not even sure that Achilles will even be in the movie outside of a shot of his armor and helmet laid out on that field of graves/bodies (probably post-defeat of Troy) that you see in some of the trailors.

My guess is that Page is playing Elpenor, one of the youngest and weakest members of Odysseus' crew that dies pretty unceremoniously. Elpenor was one of the first "spirits" that Odysseus meets in hades where he begs Odysseus to return and bury his body.

Burning Elliot Page's body on a giant screen would make this movie do $20 billion in box office in certain circles.

The only way I could see page playing Achilles in hades would be if Nolen wanted to portray an extremely diminished, broken version of Achilles unlike anything that we would envision of him.

I don't really have a strong opinion on woke culture, but the casting of Helen and Achilles (if true) really feels like Nolan did it specifically to troll.

They made Oppenheimer white. In real life he was a Pakistani woman.

Making poorly educated millennials and zoomers consider the completion of the Manhattan Project a complex moral quandary rather than the only reason their great grandfather didn't die in Japan.

I haven't really followed any of this, but I heard that Nolan took inspiration from Emily Wilson's 2017 adaption/translation of The Odyssey, which is apparently considered to be a feminist/progressive take on the story. I guess we'll see what that means.

Huh? It's an excellent translation that uses iambic pentameter to try and recreate some of the flow and sense of hearing the Odyssey in the original. The result is a much quicker, snappier version of the poem that loses a bit of the depth of some other translations that expand out without the rhyme scheme.

I swear there's a way to drag personal politics into literally everything while blaming the other side.

What it means is a certain kind of person who claims they aren't emotional like DEI woke people is getting rather emotional.

Yet another rumor spreading on X with absolutely no sourcing, being hawked by no one with any credibility whatsoever. Same as with the whole Page/Achilles thing. Sure, both rumors might end up being true, but right now it's just a bunch of anti-woke ****-stirring slop looking for clicks.

I'm also confused why Nolan of all directors is getting this suspicious treatment. He has and extensive filmography and doesn't have a history of any of the things he is being assumed to be. If any director has earned the benefit of the doubt to tell a story the way he wants, it should be Nolan. Getting upset about stuff in his movie before you see it seems very silly to me, especially for one of his movies, that whatever your qualms are with him as a filmmaker, he isn't one to cater to the political whims of the day.

It's a crap, oversimplified translation for simpletons.

It's not. It's a different style emphasizing the rhythm and meter to give a sense of the spoken nature of the original poem, something that the vast majority of translations don't offer.

The whole reason a thread for a movie that hasn't come out yet exists is to discuss and criticize what we're seeing. I love some of Nolan's movies, but he certainly isn't on some pedestal above criticism. So far, from what we can tell from the trailers, a lot of people aren't liking what they're seeing. If you are, that's ok.

It seems more strange to feel the need to goaltend for a movie/director on a message board and thread meant for open discussion. I'd get wanting to refute over the top claims that the thing is going to be a total abomination, no merit whatsoever etc. However, I've repeatedly said it might surprise me in a good way and I'm open to that, but a lot of the casting choices, wardrobe, and even the general drab/gloomy aesthetics of it have me baffled.

I think a lot of it just comes down to personal taste and what you'd hope for out of a project like this. That's what has people on X torn as well.

We're currently "goaltending" against unsubstantiated rumors. If you don't like the costumes or accents or whatever, fine. There seem to be very rational reasons for all of it, but ultimately it comes down to personal taste/opinion, and yeah, we don't all have to be on the same page in that regard.

But what we're very clearly discussing right now is this weird trend of people clinging to likely bull**** rumors that paint Nolan as some kind of super woke director, when he's never once delved into woke waters (though, going by your reductive Oppenheimer take, you'll probably disagree there too, which is expected at this point).

Yes, because I don't get visibly angry at you or anyone else who likes what they've seen so far or feels that Nolan has done / can do no wrong. You've tried to bully people from expressing ideas you don't like for years, gotten banned for it multiple times, it's your MO.

You take stuff too personally that has nothing to do with you.
