Not to sidetrack the Pitt conversation( new episode tonight, yeah!)
But Sopranos and stupid? Really?
I wouldn't call it stupid, but I had trouble getting past the '70's movie's stereotype Italian mob portrayal of the characters . It just seemed so contrived and unrealistic.
They also just made so many damned stupid decisions. Yeah, I get committing felonies and murder are not smart decisions, but the mob could be pretty sophisticated in how they ran their operations from some of the documentaries I've watched and stuff I've read over the years. Can't recall specific examples, but it was just so corny.
I also could not get invested in the characters at all. I just didn't care about any of them.
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but to the contrary, from the books I've read on the NY mafia, yes they had a bunch of schemes in various industries, but the mobsters running them weren't generally geniuses when it comes to the world of business and their schemes or operations weren't especially intricate.
Their plans were relatively simple and the guys running them often bold and obvious, and the only reason a lot of them lasted as long as they did was because of the code of omerta (i.e. no talking to the cops). But, of course, most mobsters eventually get nailed for something small and then rat to the cops to get out of trouble.
So, the simple gambling, extortion, etc schemes you see in
The Sopranos and how stupidly brazen the characters acted was pretty accurate.
