Hear ye! Hear ye! Gather here, all ye that dabble in the antiquated art of actually reading books, both text and audible, so that we may henceforth through this singular new year feast together upon the innumerable worlds therein, and here together, share in a lively rapport, uplifting us all, brightening our days, and lengthening our lists of knowledge gained, worlds visited, stories embraced, and new loves discovered!!!

This is the 2026 Books Read Thread!

All are welcome to bring your offerings to our soiree!

Let us commence, posthaste, in sharing what artful literature hath crossed our paths, illuminated places in the darkness of our minds, and made us joyful enough to long to freely share with our fellow TexAgs Villagers!

I am still working through COMC (I know, I know! I'm on about page 350 this time!), a book modeled after Patrick Bateman from American Psycho called "Maeve Fly", and a rereading of Dean Koontz's Forever Odd.

What doth thou bring to the banquet, you lovers of knowledge? Let us know the details, star the posts that help thee on thy reading journey, and let us all gather here as friends!

Welcome!

Let us begin!

I'll be finishing up Gate of the Feral Gods in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series today. I totally get why this board has been raving about it and I thank you guys for turning me onto it.

DCC us just fun, isn't it?

Dinniman touches on many deeper human topics, like sacrifice, devotion, and a struggle with the darkness possible within us all, but overall, it's just fun!

Authors like King, Koontz, Dinniman, Butcher . . . They're just telling stories that are fun to immerse yourself in.

I audible DCC in about the 1st 6 months of 2025, and now I'm sad to be in that limbo of wanting more and just waiting with everybody else. Jeff Hayes talent is ridiculous and seemingly perfect for the spirit of the story.

Glad you are liking it. The good news is you have more!

I just hope the upcoming tv show does it justice. I'm a little worried about that since most book translations over to movies/tv suck.

I would love Audible recommendations! The DCC books were my first foray into Audible and I LOVE them! And I've never read a single Lit RPG book in my life.

I then decided to try the Neuromancer Audible. It's everything I was afraid an Audible book would be - BORING! Which sucks because that is an awesome book.

So what do y'all have?

Let it be known upfront that I'm old school and prefer a physical book over kindles, audible, everything else.

BUT . . . These are great audible "reads" in my opinion.

The DCC series (you already know)
Project Hail Mary was amazing in audible
The Martian as well (same author as PHM).
The Dresden Files in Audible has gotten great reviews for the same reason DCC has . . . the reader is apparently amazing, though I read these in hard copy.

There's a few to get you started.

There are many here that can add a lot to this list, I'm sure. I have read/listened to many books and new stories because of these threads and recommendations from fellow TexAggers!

I would add Jack Carr books, the narrator is really enjoyable to listen to. The Terminal List series is great but Cry Havoc surpasses them all in my opinion.

Expeditionary Force series is also a great listen.

Stillnslogging through strength of the few. Not grabbing me yet, but I'm not that far. Haven't had a lot of reading time.

Thought Suneater was a good audible choice. On number 4, but paused for a break.

First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie Narrated by Pacey.

He narrates a character with "dental work" that sounds exactly how you think it would sound.

I'm dedicated to reading through The Sun Eater this year. Will likely consume most of 2026 with diversions to a few others.

That first diversion will be this which comes out this month:

My second diversion will be this:

Just completed Dune Messiah.

I first read Dune as a senior in high school in 1984. I read Dune Messiah in 1986, then deciding that I would not continue the series. I guess I didn't like the ending of Dune Messiah.

There was a lot of political subplotting going on in Dune Messiah that likely bored me/went over my head in 86 that in 25/26 I was better able to follow and appreciate. I enjoyed the book much more upon this second reading. I am curious how the movie will portray events of this novel, particularly with regard to differences in Chani at the end of the second movie.

Next up - Children of Dune.

The Devils was one of my favorite books read last year. It has been many years since I read the First Law series and I had forgotten how funny Abercrombie can be. This book had me rolling. Hopefully he will write more.

Cheating but finished Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson last night. Between that and devil in the white city I think I'm going to knock out the rest of his books

I've read every book Abercrombie has written aside from not finishing his YA trilogy. He's awesome. Looking forward to reading the Devils.

Is this the first book in a series? Or a one and done?

Working on finishing The Strength of the Few and then jumping back in to the Stormlight Archives with book 3, 4, 5.

Needless to say my posts may be few and far between to start the year.

The Sign of the Four by Arthur Conan Doyle

If you really want an endurance test, get the complete Sherlock Holmes collection on Audible.

I started it in February of 2022.

It took me till November to complete it. I didn't listen to it straight, through; I took breaks. Also, I almost exclusively save Audible books for when I'm driving.

I think it was 70+ hours of narration. Some were 40 minutes, some were hours long, and there were a few novelettes in there that took a lot of driving to get through.

Almost 3 full days of listening to the stories of the greatest detective the world has ever known!

I had read them all as a kid, but going back to it was great.

You gotta be committed, though!

Haha that's awesome! I am currently re-reading the entire Sherlock Holmes canon.

I have the first book in The Cinder Spires series but I've read mixed reviews about it so haven't dove into it. Did you like it?

Read the codex Alexa series several years ago and remember liking it. Actually thought about it to maybe reread recently.

Read the first book of the spires series and bogged down on the second. Did not find it quite as good.
