Finished Don Quixote. That was a ton of fun. Made me laugh out loud a lot.

Currently listening to Don Quixote, the author's preface was an absolute hoot.

Finished Jonathan Edwards: A Life (Unabridged audiobook) by George Marsden.

An intriguing look into the Great Awakening and Christian life in pre-Revolutionary America mixed with plenty of Edwards theology and his walk with Christ. Great stuff.

Did Not Finish: The Time It Never Rained by Elmer Kelton. What I read was well-written, but just not for me.

In progress: Moonraker by Ian Fleming. Someone in this thread mentioned the Bond novels and it was on sale for like two bucks on Kindle.

All,

I'm new to this thread. I listen to audiobooks every day on my Houston commute, so I'm always looking for the next good listen. I decided to try out "Dungeon Crawler Carl" last week based off the praise of multiple people on this thread. Long story short, I liked it so much I am now halfway through book 3. Thanks for the recommendation!

It's good to have you join in. Since this thread is "only" in mid-February, if you want more recommendations, look into the threads for previews years. And don't be shy about adding your thoughts as well. It took me a long time to actually participate in the threads, but everyone is very welcoming and respectful.

Finally finished Tress of the Emerald Sea. Took me awhile to get through it, just didn't pull me in as much.

Reading An Academic Affair for a little break, then probably opening up Piranesi.

7 books down so far, so slightly ahead of the pace for my goal of 50 this year.

I really enjoyed the last couple of Tom Clancy series books by M.P. Woodward. They had a bit more life to them than some of the recent books in the Jack Ryan and Jack Jr. series - not sure how to describe it other than that, so decided to check out his new book Red Tide. It was also very good - like a smaller scope version of Red Storm Rising but between the US and China.

DCC was excellent and I'm looking forward to reading book 2 soon but first I'm reading the new Pendergast novel by Preston and Child. It's a prequel, looking back to his first case in the FBI and apparently describes how Proctor came to be in his service. I just love this series, dating back to the Cabinet of Curiosities. I really would like to do a re-read of the series at some point but there are so many books waiting on my shelf.

Twelve Months by Jim Butcher--I really enjoyed the continuation, you just have to get past the first 1/3 of the Insufferably Mopey Dresden. After that, it picks up and is really good.

Completed:
  • Moonraker by Ian Fleming. Enjoyable little Bond book, definitely unlike the movie.
  • Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper. First book in the Dark is Rising series, which I'd not read in a very long time. A little YA for me, but a nice quick read nonetheless.
Up next: continue the Dark is Rising series

Project Hail Mary. The first 1/4 really did nothing for me but once it got going it kept me interested. In the end I liked it a lot. The narrator on Audible was my real hang up, good in the end but his delivery could be a little annoying at times.

Finished Critical Mass. man what a slow burn. Not as good as Delta-V and didn't like the end thought it was cheap after so much exposition leading up to the culmination.

Just finished "What Moves The Dead". Not really extraordinary, but not bad either. A solid, quick read.

Just finished "The Reed of God" by Caryll Houselander it a short book but I found it difficult to read & finish. The author has some great insights but I found her English 1944 writing hard to follow at times.

Finished Antihero (Orphan x) by Gregg Hurwitz. Enjoyed it. Subject matter is pretty thought provoking about our society.

Starting a Project Hail Mary reread before watching the movie

Competed: The Dark is Rising, Greenwitch, The Gray King, and Silver on the Tree by Susan Cooper, to complete the series. It's been so long since I'd read them that it was like reading them for the first time. Easy page-turning YA fantasy.

Up next: not sure honestly - there's a lot on my list, but nothing immediately jumps out

2. Mistborn: The Final Empire
3. Mistborn: Well of Ascension

I've been trying to do this as well with King's older stuff, and was getting ready to try these exact two books next myself. I may go Christine and then Firestarter.

Christine has a weird POV shift. Starts out from one perspective, say 3rd person, then moves to 1st person, and maybe moves back for the third act. If I recall right from the one time I read that book back in the early 80s.

Thanks for the heads-up about this. I sometimes don't do too well with such sudden POV shifts and so I'll try to keep this in mind for when I get to those parts of the book.

I've been getting back in to reading lately after an extended break, and apparently I'm out of practice on picking what to read.

A couple of weeks back I took a look through the recent Hugo & Nebula best novel nominees to see what looked interesting, and I settled on Alchemised by SenLinYu based on the blurb. It had some interesting bits and quite a few head scratchers as well, overall a solid meh. It wasn't until I'd made it through this 1000+ page beast that I did a little more digging that explained a lot of the thoughts I had while reading it. It turns out the author is a well known writer of Harry Potter fanfic, and this novel was basically said fanfic reskinned into an alternate JKR-IP-free universe.

I followed that up with Twelve Months to get rid of the ick.

Knocked out Blake Crouch's Upgrade. It's a very interesting, compelling, and entertaining read. If you liked the Lost Pines books, you'll appreciate Upgrade.

The premise is not 100 percent original, but he did an amazing job making me want to keep reading.

There's some interesting post-humanism commentary.

A bit like Andy Weir in this one with technical science, but it's not alienating.

I'd give it an A, and recommend if you like thoughtful, fun, but generally light story-telling.

Finished Dark Age yesterday and now on to Light Bringer (Red Rising Series). That was a tough book with a lot of emotions, loss and brutality. I can't remember a character that I was pulling for to end up being someone that I absolutely hated.
