There really is no "latin culture". "Latin culture" from someone growing up in Ciudad Acuna will have more in common with someone white from San Antonio than they will from someone growing up in Puerto Rico.

We have to stop thinking of hispanics as a monolithic block. They aren't. Not even close.

You can say the same thing about white people too. But that makes it a whole lot harder for liberals to scapegoat them.

Clearly not the case in texas or anywhere else in the southwest, where parts of Latin culture are inherently a part of american culture.

My problem with bunny is that he isnt any good minus auto tune and studio production.

The music was good. However, I dont know how you could watch that video posted above and think, this is a really talented singer or rapper, for that matter..

I also don't think the political message was that covert. He said it at the end- all America's make up america. Thats true in the sense of a map. Its not true in the sense of the United States.

Assimilation matters.

I just have one question…why did I just watch a concert that the majority of Americans can't understand in the sport's biggest show of the year. It just seems dumb. Imagine if the Italian Winter Olympics opening ceremony had a huge portion of their program in Chinese or something. Everyone would be going wtf.

Its not that uncommon. The opening ceremonies of the the Olympics had an entire speech in English, Linkin Park played the Champions League Final Opening in Germany, etc. Hell even the Eurovision song contest has a ton of English language music performed by countries who's primary language isn't English.

But ultimately the halftime show was made for people who don't watch football. The NFL knows their core fan base is going to watch the game no matter what. They are trying to draw in non football fans to the halftime show. The U.S. Grand Prix in Austin does a similar thing. They will sell plenty of tickets to race fans no matter what. But by loading out the evening concert schedule with some big headliners, they can capture an entirely different demographic.

And it seems to have worked. Early numbers are putting the halftime show at +135 million viewers. I think that would actually make it the most watched Super Bowl halftime show ever.

No one has had an issue with latin american culture being a part of american culture. Just like they don't have an issue with german, italian, irish and other integration of cultures in who we are as a nation.
i'm happy you and i agree on this, but this is obviously untrue

This was about expanding the NFL brand outside the US. Plain and simple.

Like someone already said, nobody outside of the US and Canada gives a flying F about American football. They play soccer, baseball, and basketball.

Every NFL game played in Europe has sold out. So someone is watching those games in person. It's never going to surpass soccer or rugby in Europe or soccer or baseball in Latin and South America, but there's demand up to a certain level there.

I speak Mexican and the little bit I saw on the news I couldn't understand half of it.

Maybe ask AI to translate to Puerto Rican?

Yep my wife speaks fluent Mexican and she couldn't understand it.

Fluent Mexican???

That's like saying Fluent American.

As the board's preeminent ambassador of brown, I concur with No Spin and the others...I speak Mexican and can't understand Island Mexican half of the time. Too mumbly and fast.

Machine head is from the Bay Area… would have been a good selection too…

But then again, I'm sure the aging metal head isn't their target demographic.

I actually partied a little bit with the guys from Machine Head in Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice's dressing rooms after the Heaven and Hell show in Chula Vista in April 2007. Ronnie had already left but he did leave us a refrigerator stocked with Boddingtons Ale.

I liked the guys from Machine Head but... since they were the opening band, they had to get on the bus and get on the road early to get to the next show so they couldn't stay long after the Heaven and Hell set.

It is funny how many of my Liberal friends thought it was the greatest thing ever.
I'm certain they never heard of Bad Bunny more than 5 months ago.
But... talking points are out and they must comply.

Apparently the latest talking point is that this wasn't about celebrating Puerto Rico but it was about making "brown kids" feel OK.

I'd love to know how many "brown kids" play dominoes and live next to a sugar cane field with unreliable power infrastructure.

As far as moving and emotional, they're never going to be able to top U2 after 9/11.

Had the entirety of the game muted. Went out and threw the tennis ball for the dog at halftime. Worked for me!

I sort of did the opposite.

After the player intros, National Anthem and flyover (B1 was pretty cool), I worked on replacing the starter on my Australian Jeep Grand Cherokee and only came back in from the garage to watch the half time show.

I love the V8 power in that Grand Cherokee but... holy heck that thing is wedged in there, making it damn near impossible to replace the starter. Should have been a 20 minute job, not hours.

I didnt see the halftime show but people were upset about Kendrick Lamar's set last year and I actually quite liked it, but I like Kendrick's music.

I enjoyed Kendrick Lamar's show also, even though it was as Black as could be.

My biggest fear with the Bad Bunny show was that he was going to bring out Drake who Kendrick Lamar just buried last year.

Just a trainwreck of ignorance.

I used to work for a Boston based company and I could barely even understand some of the Executives.

And when they spoke to an International audience, they didn't give a damn if they were understood or not.

I also worked for a Scotsman who was raised in South Africa.

My favorite though was my Company Commander in the TX Army National Guard in West Texas, who pronounced the word "Yellow" like "Yeah-La". Took me forever to figure out what he was saying.

So... there can be lots of versions of English.

Yes. Similarly, back in 2014, I saw the LA Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks open the MLB season in Sydney, Australia.

There was plenty of fan interest for a couple games but they wouldn't be able to sustain a season's worth.

Apparently on a whim they invited Bad Bunny to their wedding. He turned around and said, "I have a different idea". He also reportedly signed their marriage certificate as the official witness.

I've been flipping between the game and the puppy bowl.

Puppy bowl is cuter.

I do actually watch NFL games some.

I'm a big Texans fan. But I just don't care if either one of these teams win… or lose, just a meh match-up.

Texans suck. 50 years ago the Cowboys would have kicked their asses.

The Cowboys haven't been much better since the Texans were founded. Every NFC team has made the NFC Championship game since the last time the Cowboys did. The Texans have seven playoffs wins since their inaugural season. Over that same time span, the Cowboys have four.

The Houston NFL franchise and the Dallas NFL franchise have been around almost an equal number of years. One has had no Super Bowl success, the other has, but none in decades. Both cities suck.

Does that include the Houston NFL franchise that is in Nashville or the Houston NFL Franchise that is in Houston? Technically, they are not the same Houston NFL Franchise, and one of them has only been around about 20 years.

Also technically, the Nashville Houston NFL Franchise was supposed to give up rights to the old Houston NFL Franchise mascot and logos, but I still see the evil spawn of that ******** Bud Adams continuing his legacy of misrepresentation and receipt by using said mascot and logo.

The most hilarious and typical hypocritical thing about this whole thing is it exposes the right. They've spent the last years talking about how things should be merit based and that race/culture shouldn't matter. Bad Bunny got this on merit despite the NFL knowing they'd get flamed by the hypocritical right.

I'm sure he has lots of merit among his fan base.

I just think it's highly unlikely that there is very much overlap in the Venn diagram of his fan base and the NFL fan base, which is why I thought it was an odd choice.

I watched with an open mind, and as I stated in this thread, I found it...adequate.

But I knew all along that it wasn't aimed at me.

When you need your halftime show to generate the drama your game cannot produce, then the sport you administer needs attention while the NFL maintains its dominance. If they don't look at the borefest produced on Sunday and adjust, then they will go into a slow decline.

Nothing in the NFL approaches the intensity level produced by the collegiate version of the game. Five minutes of Indiana and Miami was better value for the ticket buyer than the entire Super Bowl.
