6 y/o got promoted to gray/white "belt" in no gi this past week. At the end of class, The professor gave all the other kids 30 sec each one by one to try and take him down and then promoted him after. It was a big surprise to him and we all had a blast.

Still rolling, though not as much due to lots of work, kids activities, etc.
That and I got a nice sprained thumb while rolling last week. At least it's not on my dominant side!

Yeah, I started training again at a different school / association and it's a very 'young' school with mostly white/blue and most of the guys in physical jobs. So it's a tough place (with nice folks).

I'm 4 weeks in and have been doing 3 classes per week and I'm feeling the pain of being the 'old guy' on the mats.

After 8 weeks off due to injury and 2 weeks off due to work, I finally get to return fully to class today! Chomping at the bit here.

Haven't been able to train much since June due to a new job, but I did get promoted to Brown Belt this weekend.

Hope everyone's training is going well!

My phone reminded me I got my blue belt a year ago last month and I had to stop rolling not long afterward because the arthritis in my shoulder is so bad. I'm still hoping to get surgery before the end of the year but my wife has to have ankle surgery the first week in November due to a partially torn ligament. I don't plan on scheduling that surgery until we know how long her surgery is going to impact her mobility since it's her right ankle and she won't be able to drive for a while. I just don't think it's smart to have that on the books when it's her right ankle and my right arm that will be impacted.

Sorry for the pity party, I just miss getting to roll.

I've had to work nearly every day since May and have probably only trained 5 times. Add in a baby that turned six months this week and I really suck now.

We about to be through with this turn so I can get some steady training this fall.

Not sure if anyone here is a baseball fan, but Noah Syndergaard just started training at my gym. Had no idea he lived in DFW until he walked in a said he was looking for a new hobby and heard BJJ was yoga for men lol.

I'm not a huge sports fan, so I had to look him up. Any professional athlete with the nickname of "Thor" is going to be a problem on the mats once he figures this out...Good luck.

You definitely meet some interesting characters along the journey.

Well boys, I levelled up this past weekend. I thought it MIGHT be coming but it still shocked me when I heard my name called.

According to all the legends that I've heard, I can now get statues pregnant and I never have to show up on time again...

Now I have work to do.

Trained for the first time In a long time last night. Was hoping to get in some casual open mat rounds but forgot that Friday night is a comp class now and enjoyed 30 min of hell rounds. One of my partners didnt get the memo about my six month semi hiatus and wanted all of the sauce. First ten min was good, second was bad, and by the third I was a dead fish doing my best not to puke.

I went to my first class in about a year last night, my shoulder has been feeling decent for a while because of how I've been exercising which has mostly been kettlebells and pull ups. The guy that runs the school just happened to send me a text last week to see how I was doing and they're going to let me try a few classes to see how it holds up. This is how I'm going to figure out whether or not I need surgery because I need to know if what I've been doing has specifically mitigated my pain issues, or if it's 100% been because I haven't been to BJJ for a while.

I went to the advanced class because it's a lot easier to roll safely with those guys instead of the white belts, even if I feel that's where I should be because I've forgotten so much over the last year. I felt guilty bowing out when I did because it wasn't long after I was promoted to blue belt and I know that's an issue. It was good to be back on the mat, even if I sucked. My cardio wasn't great, I felt like a complete newb again, but at least I went. Fingers crossed I can figure out a way to make this work because I really don't want to have surgery if at all possible.

Glad to hear you're back on the mats! And I hope everything holds up and that you can stay healthy!

I've been training consistently for the past 4 months, and it had gone pretty well until last week.....took a knee to the face last week on a take-down, and then a couple days later got a couple ribs popped on the receiving end of a rough knee to belly.

Any insight on starting out in no gi?

I do a lot more Gi than no gi, but I think you should get some basics down with the Gi first. Just my humble opinion.

Visit multiple gyms to see the culture prior to signing up. Take advantage of free trial weeks. At 35 you might want to avoid gyms loaded with 20 something former wrestlers & serious competitors.

Wear a cup & mouthpiece.

You'll be drinking from the firehose starting out. It's a long road & you'll never, ever learn everything. Focus on defense first & a few core attacks. Some will come easier & more naturally, find out what works best for you & your body type and develop your "game". The internet is fully of exotic and difficult submissions, but the basics if mastered will make you a handful for most. Kimura. Armbar. Rear Naked Choke. Triangle Choke. Arm Triangle. D'Arce. Guillotine. etc.

I don't think there is any advantage or disadvantage on starting in gi or no-gi personally. Essentially they are two different sports/martial arts albeit with a lot of crossover.

Gi tends to be slower & has a lot more submissions. I have grown to prefer no-gi because the kimono is freaking hot and it's tough on the fingers. Both are technical in their own way.

You'll benefit greatly in either sport!

Do it. I think its good to train both gi and no gi.

Like apache said visit all the gyms you can. It doesn't hurt to train with the 20 somethings but the 35 and 40 year old guys know what its like to be 35 and 40.

Where are you located?
Sweep4-2

Go for it! Try both gi and nogi out to see what you like....they are both fun, just in really different ways.

Ultimately, training both makes for a more complete grappler, But for a beginner, I'd recommend training in the gi first. It'll develop fundamentals you won't get training nogi. And once you've got solid fundamentals, go for nogi and see if you like it.

I spend most of my time training gi these days, but in my younger days I trained plenty of both and enjoyed the variety.

Keep us posted on what you find!
