Been watching some Norwich City threads today, and they already have some great nicknames going for Sargent. "Orange Mamba" is a good one, but my favorite so far is "Ronaldo Weasley".

The US has plenty of opportunities to integrate prospects, whether that be summers with multiple tournaments, or the January camps.

When your star player is that invested in the team... good things will happen

Pulisic also revealed his reaction to the Gold Cup triumph, saying he watched the entire game despite the time difference.

The USMNT was able to top Mexico on a 117th-minute finish from Miles Robinson in a game that went deep into the night in Las Vegas, but that didn't stop Pulisic from staying up to watch his teammates' victory.

"Honestly, it was just incredible," he said. "I mean how far this team has come. We've had different squads in for the Nations League, for the Gold Cup, and no one has backed down from the challenge. And I'm seeing just a fight in this group that it makes me so proud and just very excited for what's to come.

"I went absolutely nuts at four in the morning. I was jumping out of my bed. I was so excited. I mean it, yeah, I mean you could just feel it coming and then it happened. And it was just amazing to watch."

My first response was "we do have those", then realized he's probably alluding to the fact that we in fact do have those teams that either don't qualify for (or succeed in) meaningful tournaments, have consistent coaches and player groups, or get the appropriate players called up for them.

Yea, for some reason our US federation has been really bad about getting the youth teams together in camps and playing friendlies. It seems like the kind of thing that would be really important, and a lot of countries do it regularly (especially Mexico)

Isn't the U17 and U20 programs a yearly thing though? Its like year 1 CONCACAF, year 2 World Cup, repeat isn't it? Its just all been cancelled for two year now...

That's part of it, missing the Olympics didn't help either. But you could still have occasional camps and be implementing some of our bigger picture strategy into those squads.

Not sure how you define a top tier league but I would consider the Bundesliga a top tier league.

The Sargent - Bremen relationship is not salvageable at this point. Norwich and Bremen agreed to let Sargent play in the DFB as his last game at Bremen over the weekend. Sargent went to the staff and said he was not able to play. Bremen staff was very displeased with that decision.

How good was he in the Bundesliga last year? I feel like he needs to play in Bundesliga 2 or the English Championship, or another like for like league. Dude just isn't that impressive to me and he's going to be playing behind Pukki, who has more skins on the wall and is more proven.

Dude needs to play. He's young.

He didn't score a lot of goals but he was consistently their highest rated player. Which is why they were able to sell him.

Getting playing time doesn't necessarily help his development at Bremen. McKennie is a perfect example of that. He was getting playing time at Schalke but they were so bad and he was playing everywhere he didn't really develop. He goes to Juve and gets less playing time in league matches but on a better team and plays consistently in his role.

He was consistently the bright spot of that team when he played. The problem with Bremen last season is that they employed a single striker formation and were so abysmal at getting service to that striker they basically were playing without one. It was rough. Bremen was historically bad at scoring goals last season.

I think with a season or 2 to adjust to English football and with proper service he can be a good striker for Norwich. I don't think anyone is expecting him to come in and immediately start but Norwich is lacking depth at their striker position so it is expected that he will get minutes.

To add to this.....

There were several games last season where he had more touches inside his own 18 than the opponents.

While playing as a 9!

Think on that.

I've thought about it and I think that really speaks to Sargent's work rate. A forward tracking back to inside the 18 to win/clear the ball is pretty unusual.

Gets more service in his own box than he does in opponents.

The points gap from the prior ranking period was bigger than the net difference of the points gained for this period. The gap was 75 points last period, but now is only 10 points. Only Italy earned more points than we did from May to August rankings.

We jumped over Germany, Uruguay, Chile, Denmark, Netherlands, Croatia, Colombia and Switzerland.

Gotcha, I knew there was a formula but seems silly to discount head to head results.

And while I appreciate our new rankings, there's several teams in that group I am surprised we'd be favored over.

Once WCQ starts, you'll see the the rankings even out. I don't think wins our WCQ opponents outside of Mexico will help us maintain our spot because of the ranking difference.

For the math geeks out there, here's the FIFA points calculation formula: FIFA Points Calculation Formula

It doesn't discount the h2h just the rankings look back at like 4 years of results (discounting older results I believe).

Would actually be interesting to build a CFB model that looked at 4 years of weighted results like this.
akm91

Here's the formula:

P = Pbefore + I * (W We)

Pbefore: Points before the match
I: Importance of the match (5-60)
W: Results of match (1: win; .5: draw; 0: loss)
We: Expected Results

We = 1 / (10 exp(-dr/600) + 1)
dr: Difference in points between the teams

I don't think it looks back 4 years, just the current point in time

did anyone watch the USMNT friendly loss to Switzerland just before the concacaf nations league games this summer?

Both summer cups and both rosters were great to watch and the US player pool looks as deep and talented as it ever has. I don't think I've ever been higher on USA soccer. Still, I find it hard to believe right now that our best 11 would beat Netherlands, Germany, Croatia, Uruguay, Colombia, etc. (yet). I don't think Mexico would either.

You talking about the friendly that neither Adams or Pulisic played in? The one we started Jackson Yueill in? Definitely our best 11.

That ebing said, FIFA rankings are always taken with a big grain of salt. I think we are a top 25 team in the world, and most of the teams in the 11-25 range are relatively even. We COULD definitely beat all of those teams. This does make it easier for some of our younger national team members to move to teams in the Premier League while we stay ranked 10th.

yeah; i'm talking about that friendly... of course adams, pulisic could have made a difference in that friendly, and I think the USMNT could beat anyone in the world, but the eye ball test, #9 Mex and #10 USA, both ahead of germany, netherlands, denmark, croatia, uruguay, etc. Even though they pass them on the FIFA formula, I don't think they pass the eyeball test just yet. that's all i'm saying.

Mexico beat Germany soundly in WC'18. Mexico and US definitely passes the eyeball test compared to those you listed.

What US has lacked in the past was the technical skills to compete with those teams but that's no longer the case.

Mexico has always have technical skills to hang with those teams and have gotten over the psychological hump.

When was the last time the US failed to advance from the group stage of a WC? We're perennial overachievers, if anything. Not qualifying last time was a major shock, nationally and personally.

I get really nervous and scared during qualifying. I'm worried (I'm not joking) that if the USA doesn't make the WorldCup I may not live long enough to see the next one. It's been a fear of mine since the 2002 WorldCup in Korea/Japan...

As I have told many people, when we played T&T in the last round of 2018 Wcq I was watching upstairs in my Harvey-flooded house, and I couldn't decide which event was more devastating. I figured come summer, my house would be repaired, but the USMNT still wouldn't be in the World Cup for at least four more years.

My house wasn't fixed in time for the first game of WC 2018, but was done during the group stage.
