After meeting with Rockets officials in Las Vegas, including dinner with coach Kevin McHale, Omer Asik returned to Chicago and signed his three-year, $25.1 million offer sheet Friday.

The Bulls will have until 10:59 p.m. on the third day from when they receive the offer sheet to match or decline the terms, which include a $14,898,000 salary in 2014-15. Though attempts to present the offer sheet were made, the Bulls have yet to receive it

Why is it so hard for us to get things delivered?
Mr.Bond

So it's identical to Lins deal?

Identical to Lin's deal.

Bulls have until 10:59 CT to match. Does not look like they will. Asik is a big upgrade defensively.

Apparently Nazr Mohammed is signing with the Bulls, so they're letting Asik walk.

I guess we won't be able to take in as much salary in a Dwight Howard trade now.

Right now I would rather have Bynum over Howard because think much better chance to keep past 2013.

Howard would at least have to be part of a sign and trade next season to get max years/dollars, so I'd rather have Howard, the better player, for at least a year.

Asik is a top 10 defensive player in the league per some league experts. But he's a bottom 10 offensive player.

This. He's a great defender, especially against pick and roll. But he has never figured it out offensively. He still could though. Marcin Gortat went from a 4.0 points/game player in Orlando to 13.0 and 15.4 points/game in Phoenix.

Asik's shown some promise, but I read somewhere he also averages something like 5 fouls per 36 minutes. True top 10 defenders don't do that. If that stat is true, I'd probably place my money on him being a $15MM stiff in a couple of years vs. great defensive anchor.

From what I've heard/read Asik's biggest offensive challenge is the ability to catch the basketball.

I was really opposed to this signing until I listend to a podcast between two bloggers, one that follows Houston and one that follows Chicago. The chicago blogger was legitimately sad about losing Asik and pointed out that the only reason they can let him go is because they already have Noah and they are way over the cap. Contrast that with my feelings about Dalembert, where I was basically happy to see him leave. I think we are getting an solid upgrade at the center position, but it wont make us contenders.

http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2012/07/23/scola-rockets-said-they-wanted-to-go-younger/

quote:
"They (general manager Daryl Morey and VP of player personnel Gersson Roses) called me right around draft day and they said they had drafted power forwards, and they told me they were going to get some big player to help us right now, which I could be a big part of that,” Scola told SheridanHoops.com Sunday night after Scola’s Argentinian national team lost to Team USA 86-80.

“But then failing to do that, and getting some power forwards , they believed they needed to go young,” Scola said. “They told me they don’t think they’re going to be doing nothing in the next 3-4 years, which is when I’m going to be a player. They’re trying to go younger, and they’re looking 3-4 years ahead.”

Did they say it was a signal they were going to get Dwight Howard?

“I don’t know. I don’t know that much.”

Did they mention him?

“No, they didn’t. But I know they’re looking for him. and I know they told me they may need to clear some cap for something that comes up. But I don’t know for a fact,” Scola said. “When I knew I wasn’t going to be on the team, I stopped asking questions about the team. They stopped telling me too.

“Usually, they used to tell me what was going to happen, and what they were looking to have happen. And they told me I wasn’t going to be a part of the team anymore, then they didn’t tell me nothing.”

Ah no, he was amnestied, which basically means he gets his full contract. If he had cleared waivers he would of been free to collect his full contract frmo the the Rockets and then negotiate.

It is not that he made too much money it's that he used up too much cap to make a run at Howard.

"Doing nothing"= getting 9th place in the west for the next three years. Just tank the ****ing season and get shabazz for goodness sakes!

Looks like Orlando is now backing out of trade talks now since they have no leverage to get a decent deal in their favor.

Can't blame Orlando for trying to get a ton in return, but without assurances that Dwight will stay, I don't think teams will offer the moon. Also the Rockets really are the only ones who can offer what Orlando wants right now, and I'm guessing our offer reflects that.

So the Rockets blew up the team and did not make an aggressive offer for Howard? And a couple of weeks ago I was critical of the Mavs' offseason.

Two things are for sure. Regardless of how the Mavs' season goes next year, they will:
1) Have a better season than the Rockets
2) Be in better shape to land Howard next year.

God bless the Rockets.

I believe the Rockets have made aggressive offers, but Orlando trying to wait it out for more. Plus, Orlando is hoping Dwight changes his mind again, but that isn't going to happen. As for next offseason, I think it will be a sign-and-trade if he does leave whatever team he's on, which hurts the Mavs' chances a lot. But the Rockets' only shot is to land him now and persuade him to stay.

So, will the Rockets put Lin/Martin/White/Parsons/Asik on the court to start the first game?

I doubt Royce White starts. Probably Patterson or maybe Donatas.

I don't see Howard agreeing to a sign and trade deal next year. I'm not saying the Mavs get him but I don't see him cooperating with Orlando.

Royce White was a good pick-up. Although I admit that I like what I am seeing so far from Crowder and James in the Summer League.

It has nothing to do with cooperating with Orlando and everything to do with getting a full max deal. He leaves close to $25 mil on the table by not agreeing to a sign and trade. Also, I do not think he will be in Orlando by next offseason.

Kevin Martin is the only guy over 26 on the roster, and he's just 29. The Rockets might be fun to watch, and terrible. That would probably be best case scenario for them, because their best hope to get a centerpiece franchise player might be to get a top 3 draft pick.

Remember when the Rockets needed a PF so badly that people thought Stromile Swift was an upgrade? At least we don't have to worry about that right now.

He only got probation, that means he is still eligible...sign him up Morey!

I'm not basing this on anything more than a hunch, but I still don't think there's any way Howard starts the season with Orlando. I think the only leverage that Orlando has is to make this bluff.
ZooGuy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Orlando has the chance to get hosed in a deal. Howard will not sign another extension there.

If they were smart, they would take the Rockets offer now. The Rockets have the most draft picks, etc. to offer, unless they want Bynum... still, Rockets have much more to offer.
JerryAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If I'm Houston I take the risk on Bynum. Don't trade for Howard because he will not come back. Keep the team together and make a run at Bynum who wouldn't mind playing there. That's just Jerry's opinion
