White was a better offensive point guard last year than Murray has been so far. Not sure what that means for rotations, it's such a junky lineup on the perimeter right now. Murray and DeRozan is the worst shooting backcourt possible though, it won't work in the playoffs. Maybe start White and have Murray play the three on offense. If he has figured out a 35% corner three that might actually be a good lineup. He'd be a great secondary perimeter scorer who is more than capable of slashing to the rim and knocking in offensive rebounds if someone else can warp the defense first.

I dont think you can make any definite assertions right now about Murrays shooting. We havent seen him in a game since April of 2017. Supposedly hes been working on his shot the entire time. On a similar note, White also set some lofty goals to improve his 3 ball this summer. Both young guys could take huge leaps and transform this offense while being the best defensive backcourt in the league. It's not impossible.

The direction of the franchise will become much clearer this season and it hangs on the kind of improvements that our three young guys make. If one or multiple of those guys look like they could be real pieces on a contending team, then we start building around them. If Murray continues to be an offensive black hole, White is just an above average player, and Lonnie never figure out how to use all that athleticism, then we're probably blowing it up soon.

Lots more players talk about coming back with a shot than actually do it. Murray's definitely got a chance to do it; he seems like a hard worker and he's definitely had time, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Most players dont have Chip. A short list of players who couldn't shoot when they got here (off the top of my head):

Kawhi - went from below average to the most efficient scorer in the league
Tony - admittedly never had to shoot growing up. Developed into a good mid range and threatening corner 3 ball guy
Danny Green & Bruce Bowen - Both of these guys got a chance because of their defense and then became key starters due to developing a spot up 3 ball

It can definitely happen.

Gay had career highs in FG% and 3FG% last year.

Chip also worked with Steve Kerr, Shane Battier, and Grant Hill before he was with the Spurs.

It must really be the offseason if this is getting us excited.

Has anyone ever jumped from the scout team to team USA during training camp?

According to this, Daddy Derrick has.

Stein also confirmed white will be part of a group of 15 in LA next week. Only 12 can go to China right?

Team USA scrimmage is on NBA TV right now. Or twitch.tv/nba for free. White off to a rough start.

Eeesh. That wasn't a good one for Derrick. Hopefully he didn't mess up the invite for next week.

After the game, USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo announced Thaddeus Young and Bam Adebayo had been cut from the senior roster. Select Team members Derrick White and Marvin Bagley III were promoted to the senior roster and will join the team next week when training continues in Los Angeles.

So with White and Bagley there are 17 players going next week. It's unlikely White will make it, but I think these would be the most likely cut candidates for him to make it.

Bagley (not ready)
Lowry (injured)
Smart (injured)
Kuzma (no defense)
One of Plumlee/Lopez (Plumlee is a better screener, but both are terrible. No other bigs outside of Miles)

I think Harris's shooting and Tucker's defense and international experience make them locks. The good thing is that the USA program values defense. White can guard multiple positions so he has a shot.

I'd normally agree but for White's confidence going forward, it could be huge. And it's not like he will be doing this next summer when the big boys decide they want a gold medal.

Bagley withdrew. White has to beat out 4 now.

Now it's more interesting. Still think it'll be tough but it's not out of the question to have him as 3rd string PG.

Marcus Smart still probably won't be able to practice for a few more days. Doesn't look like he will make the team.

I really like data like this. I was surprised at how low we ranked on guard minutes given the amount of guards that we have on the roster.

The wing minutes is surprising. They must have considered DeMar a wing along with Gay. Don't know who else on our team would be considered a wing that plays significant minutes.

White had 4 points tonight. Only got playing time in the second half. He had an up and down showing. With Tucker out that's 14. I don't see how Smart would stay on without getting any run up to this point so probably 13. Unfortunately I think white will be the odd man out.

With 22 straight postseason appearances under its belt, San Antonio is tied for the longest streak in history. This season, the Spurs could break the record, but they'll have to walk a tightrope to do it in the souped-up West.

Quote:

There's a reason Vegas oddsmakers are predicting that seven teams in the West will win more games than San Antonio this season. If that holds, that would leave only one playoff spot for the Spurs to claim. (I did the math.) The Spurs have some terrific young piecesDejounte Murray, Derrick White, Bryn Forbes, and Jakob Poeltl are all 26 or youngerbut the most important players from last season will all be 30 or older this season: LaMarcus Aldridge (34), Rudy Gay (33), Patty Mills (31), and DeMar DeRozan (30). Expecting those vets to keep up with conference competition that is deeper and more talented everywhere you look is asking a lot.

The Spurs have done a great job defying expectations for decades. San Antonio recently promoted longtime general manager R.C. Buford to CEO, a reward for a job well done that so far has yielded four titles on his watch. If he and Popovich figure out a way to keep the Spurs chugging along despite the mounting odds against them, it won't surprise anyone. But this can't go on forever, can it? At some point, all dynasties end and give way to something new.
