Houston stumbled into their rebuild. They made such horrible trades that it tanked the season. They got less for Harden than we did for Kawhi.
Enzo The Baker said:
I think because this rebuild does not include a #1 pick (or top 4 for that matter). That's the main difference. We've had the luxury of building our teams through the draft because we drafted particular players to fit with Tim. We don't have that luxury right now, and we can only draft so many #4-8+best players on a team. Otherwise it's just going to be perpetual.
If we can work out a trade for something like DJ and Lonnie with 3 firsts and two swaps I would consider it. I doubt Morey would like him but we can also consider them as DeMar destination. We have a lot of young guys right now that we can develop and we can get the majority of those picks we give up to align with the remaining 4 years of Simmons' contract.
All I'm saying is I want our front office to fully commit to competing or fully commit to rebuilding. This straddling of the two is just futile IMO.
I don't think Chicago wants to keep him. THey traded for Vucevic, have Thaddeus Young, and drafted Patrick Williams #4 last year. They are set for post/PF without Lauri. I am not sure the price will be super high for Lauri. For a ~12-18mm/year deal, he is a take. He hit 40% of his threes and 54% from the corner. He is a minus defender, but maybe that improves in a better system with better coaching.Enzo The Baker said:
Yea. The FA market looks like it's going to be pretty dry. I don't get the Lauri interest. Yes he can space the floor but 1) We would have to overpay him for what he does and 2) Why sign him if the Spurs have confidence in Luka? (Maybe they don't. I sure don't.)
Absolutely, need to sign a playmaker in addition to Lauri or Portis. I don't think White/Murray are the answers there for the whole game.Quote:
The problem is as much of a black hole as Demar was on defense, he was still a playmaker and was our go to guy at the end of the games. So even if we sign some of these FAs to fill up our cap space and we lose DeMar, who's to say we get better? And if we do, it will only be incremental and I put our ceiling as another play-in candidate getting another late lottery draft pick.
Maybe I'm being shortsighted, but I think we should go after Simmons. And if not, just play our young guys heavy mins all season (hoping one of them turns into a playmaker), get a decent draft pick and approach FA next season with some cap space. Hopefully we don't give Walker a ridiculous extension. He doesn't deserve White/DJ money.

I would think this would help in terms of us getting a sign and trade and getting something in return.

Walker was 4th best percentage wise on our team last year at 35.5% (not including Eubanks and Jones because of volume). That's not spectacular. That's not to mention the number of times he turns invisible and doesn't contribute a thing on offense and how he hasn't learned how to play team defense after three seasons. I hope I'm wrong but that guy just doesn't have it between the ears and he has major confidence issues.
I love White but he's slowly getting into the Anthony Davis 'yea, but if he wasn't injured' category.

Yea I mentioned it earlier. So far the most prominent team ive seen is the Clippers. Not too hot on a Luke Kennard/Zubac combo. I guess we will see.
White missed 15 games in '18-19 due to heel issues. He also got hurt in the bubble as well last season.Quote:

Agreed. I think he'd be a great creator/distributor for that team. Unfortunate that Morey (Morey ball) and Doc (defensive coach) are there.Quote:
If Morey wasn't in charge in Philly, then I'd think a S&T Derozan for Simmons would be the starting point for a deal. Philly is desperately in need of the exact skillset DD brings to the table. Unfortunately, Morey has his 3pters and layups uber analytics mindset.

The Spurs "young core" isn't all that young anymore. Next year will be Murray's 6th season at 25, White's 5th season at 27, and Walker's 4th season at 22.
Samanic, Vassell, and Keldon Johnson may well have some upside, but if White/Murray make a leap it will count as late development. Great if they do, but it would be pretty dumb to make roster decisions based on those guys being anything other than what they already are. Walker might put the pieces together, but even that looks more like a third option or sixth man than a lead scorer or playmaker.
The Spurs are loaded with guys who can be the third to eighth best guy on a good team. No one who can be first or second. I don't think Simmons fixes that, and he's not a good fit with this team either. There's no one for him to run PnR with and we don't have good shooters.

I think White is a off the bench combo guard rather than your primary playmaker.Ag Natural said:Ulrich said:

Yeah Murray and White are vets at this point. They should be filling that role so the team can move on from the DD, Gay and Mills Trio. I disagree that they are done developing though. White in particular looked to jump a level this season before he broke his toe. Plus they are both great defenders. You can win with that back court.

I'm good with going after Simmons, but Simmons needs shooters around him, and we don't have shooters besides the rookies. Morey is asking for a star plus 7 draft picks/swaps and he can GTFO with that ***** White + a first or two maybe. Despite his defense and passing, he isn't ideal for most teams, and certainly not for how our team is set up right now.
PG FAs right now:
Dennis Scroeder (Thinks he's worth 100mm.)
Mike Conley (likely stay in Utah)
Kyle Lowry (Likely doesn't want to lead rebuilding)
Lonzo Ball (I think a great pick for us)
Spencer Dinwiddie (I think a great pick for us, plus owns a home in SA with his GF)
Elfrid Payton (Be a solid guard off the bench, but can't shoot)
Dennis Smith (I thought he would be better than he is. Still just under 24yo.)
TJ McConnell (Can't shoot, but fine for second team)
DeVonte' Graham (Probably #2 choice after Lonzo.)
Alex Caruso (Only NBA player better than Lonnie)
Finding a PG is rough right now. And we really need a starting and backup.
The Hornets have extended a qualifying offer to Devonte' Graham, making him a restricted free agent.

Among the free agents the Spurs are expected to investigate are Golden State wing Kelly Oubre Jr., Atlanta big man John Collins, Chicago forward Lauri Markkanen, Cleveland center Jarrett Allen and Portland forward Zach Collins.
John Collins, Markkanen and Allen are restricted free agents, giving their current teams the right to match outside contract offers.
The Hawks are expected to make a strong play to retain Collins after their surprise run to the Eastern Conference finals.
Markkanen and Allen are deemed more gettable. The Spurs also could use their cap space to work a sign-and-trade perhaps involving DeRozan for either player.

The Miami Heat are positioning themselves to become front-runners to land Kyle Lowry in a sign-and-trade agreement once discussions are permitted to begin with the opening of NBA free agency on Monday, sources told ESPN.
Lowry has long been intrigued with joining Heat star Jimmy Butler and the Miami organization, and now Miami has maneuvered to have two key elements of a possible sign-and-trade package -- guard Goran Dragic and forward Precious Achiuwa -- to offer the Raptors once talks can ensue at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, sources said.

He's willing to listen to other teams.
Sign Kawhi.
Let him rest all year.
Have Joe Wieskamp's dad (a physical therapist) work with him.
Grab a Top 4 draft pick.

Am told DeRozan would have Heat interest if money can be solved (big if). He and former teammate Lowry have very good relationship. A bit difficult to imagine player who averaged 21.6 points and 6.9 rebounds needing to take $9.5 M, though @johnhollinger has noted talk of that.
