speaking of Springer...

we are getting closer to George coming back to the Astros

just 2 years left on his Blue Jays contract

We don't need an aging right handed outfielder who's way overpaid.

We offered 6/156 publicly and Ketch said privately he got a bigger one from us and a bigger one yet from someone else.

That's 6 years and $30 AaV. I have no clue what he's waiting for

He's waiting on the 7th year.

Then he's nuts. If I were the GM I would have taken the 6/156 contract offer, scratched out the 6 and put a 7 in its place and said "Sure. There you go. Seven years just like you wanted."

Whoever is driving the bus (Alex or Boras) is driving in the desert at night, with no lights and no GPS all while wearing MIB standard issue Ray Bans.

I think Boras likes to drag things out to the point where potential suitors miss out on other options and force a bidding war when it becomes his client or bust. Dana said, F that and pulled the trigger on Walker. It wouldn't surprise me if Bregman ultimately signs for less than our offer, either in years or annual salary.

He's in a downward trend on both offense and defense. It's a really bad idea to sign guys based on nostalgia when their performance goes to hell. We got his best years already.

The Blue Jays need to start offering people insane money just to see if it's really just them.

LIke offer Alonso $480 million for 6 years and see what happens.

Probably not many people my age here so most never saw him. Larry Dierker definitely belongs. In the majors at 17, played on some horrendous teams but won 137 games, pitched a no hitter, first 20 game winner, great broadcaster and Astros manager. He was absolutely a horse.

Jim Wynn would have hit who knows how many HR playing in the current band box. When he played the dimensions of the dome were 340 down the lines, 390 in the alleys and 406 to center.
Oh I'd fully agree on Dierker.

The guy who is missing from the list who an old scout I grew-up learning from would talk about was J.R. Richard...insisted that Richard would be mentioned among the greats in the game had the stroke not ended his career very prematurely.

JRR was the right handed Randy Johnson of his time.
People who never saw him just cannot fathom how scary he was in the early years when he really had no control.
And JR absolutely OWNED the Dodgers! LOL
"only one thing is important!"

I'm expecting a few nostalgia signings of former players from the 2017 & 2022 title teams

at the end of their careers

1-year deals and such

We've already done this with JV in 23 and 24. I don't want multiple of those guys on the team. Better to just do the 1 day contract so they can retire as Astros.

What if by then the team is mostly younger guys and would benefit from a veteran presence, similar to when we brought Beltran in for 2017?

Hall of Fame voting has over 15% of the votes in. As expected, Ichiro (100%) and Wagner (88.3%} looking good for induction.

CC Sabathia (90%) off to a more solid start than expected. He was a dark horse 1st ballot candidate given the big market love and solid regular reason and playoff numbers.

Beltran (76.7%) has made a big year over year jump to put him on the fringe, but probably not enough to hold on as he saw a big drop last year between pre results and final count.

Andruw jones (70%) looks like he will have to wait until next year, which will be his 9th time on the ballot..

Andrew Jones is wild. 60 WAR by age 30 then basically nothing. I'd have him in based on peak performance.

the issue with Jones' hall of fame candidacy is not a secret -- right?

some players got a free pass for that era...and some did not

Jones and Berkman are fairly comparable and contemporary players, with Jones having the edge in counting stats based on playing longer. However other that HR, his numbers based on the big edge in games played aren't really there. He should have a bigger edge and doesn't. But the basic and sabermetric non counting stats all significantly favor Lance. And by significantly I mean it's not close. Yes Jones was an exceptional fielder, but Lance was the better hitter by far.

I've been pretty vocal that the writers who vote are idiots and dropping Lance from the ballot on the first try was criminal. Is he a HOFer? I think so. Is he marginal? No doubt and I can see the argument that he's in the HOVeryGood. But he basically got no votes. Putting Jones in would be a cruel joke.

I don't think his swing would do well in Detroit

Kenny Lofton another guy who shouldn't have been dropped at first ballot,, 68 bwar enough to earn at least a few years of votes

His 210 career HR would be park adjusted to 158 if he played in Detroit. Between the dimensions and cold weather early and late I would think it would be a rough place for him to play. But I'm not the GM in Detroit. What do I know.

Yup. Compare him to Ichiro. It's not that different. One will be first ballot. One got like 2-4%.

I'm not saying Baez 2.0 but it's not going to be pretty for him there.

He's leaving a park that is literally the most beneficial to his swing. Anywhere he goes would be worse. But Detroit would be one of the worst overall. It's not just Detroit but he's looking at playing lots of games in KC, Cle and Minn where he would also experience a significant drop in production just based on the parks. Overall, the ALCentral is the worst Division for him on expected HR.

But again, it's not my money.

If Ichiro had come to the US at age 22 instead of 27, there's a decent chance he breaks Pete Rose's hits record.

Rose finished at 4,256
Ichiro finished at 3,089

His first 5 years in the league, Ichiro averaged 226 hits per season. Give him 5 more years of that number tacked on to his career total and he's at 4,219. He also would have liked topped 600 steals (509 actual), 400 doubles (362 actual) and 1,900 runs (1,420 actual).

As it is, he finished 90th all-time in runs scored, 25th in hits, and 35th in steals. Starting 5 years earlier puts him on the short list of the greatest contact hitter of all time.
