Just a few random thoughts.

BCG was A&M. At least the A&M of the 20th century.

Not a silver spoon entitled brat with high test scores and doting parents.

No, he was the guy who picked himself off the floor, clawed and scratched for everything, and made no apologies for disturbing the potted palms.

Then a basketball school fed his ego and stole him. Egos do get hungry.

Then we went for a mid major who was trying to prove something. He proved he was a good enough coach here to attract the attention of Maryland and we lost Turgeon.

We need to lock Bucky down. Seriously. Two things: we give him what we were paying Buzz, retrii oh active. ($4.8MM). But to get that money, he has to pick up a PhD at A&M.

If we can turn the coach into an Aggie……we might find our next Shelby.

No chance buzz gets canned before year two…NONE. They're not UK or Duke or UNC. They have the 3rd ranked recruiting class according to some services. He'll be fine

That recruiting class ranking is because a local 5 star signed with them. From what I've read it sounded like that guy was committing to Maryland regardless of who the coach was. Not like buzz all of a sudden can recruit.

They have the #3 recruiting class incoming and Payne will likely be back after a medical redshirt. He's getting next year

If they stink next year the yeah he may not get a year 3

There is 0% chance he doesn't get next year though, barring scandal

I think we have as much chance of getting Payne next year as Maryland does.

Hmmm. Would Payne play the Agee role? Would he be willing to be AN option instead of THE option? He was a focal point of the Buzz offense last year at the end and this year before he got hurt.

I didn't understand why Maryland wanted him (especially at the price they paid).

I honestly didn't understand why we wanted him at the price WE paid.

Water under the bridge. It's nice to have Bucky here now. Buzz games were just not fun, even in wins. Similar to Jimbo outside of 2020.

BCG was actively looking to leave the year before he did. He wasn't stolen by anybody. It wasn't a secret in coaching circles. I would say most coaches are like that and to get somebody to stay long term is the extreme exception.

People here love BCG for taking us from a winless season to aspirations of winning it all. But they ignored everything else about him and only wanted to focus on the good things they believed and not the truth about Billy

I'll never understand how "wins" weren't fun

Watching us beat #2 Bama and #1 Auburn at home was pretty ****ing fun

They swung and missed on any other choices. They didn't have an AD so they ran at of options.

I will admit to also lurking on the MD basketball fan sites. One factor I hadn't considered is the success their former coach, Kevin Willard, is having at Villanova (15-5 and took UConn to overtime Saturday). Sort of the reverse of us getting enjoyment from Buzz's problems at MD. Rubbing salt in the wounds.

They see what's happening here too.

So do the guys that followed him I'm sure.

Yeah that's a pretty funny take that's popped up since Buzz left.

If Buzz was ever going to get fired it was because the entire athletic department hated him. If he had a down year this year the fan base would've said "we lost a bunch of seniors, of course we're gonna have a down year, he needs time to build another core group of guys".

I mainly still can't believe Maryland hired him of all places. A&M is one of the only places in the country that his shtick played well at. Maybe Virginia Tech too. Both are places where basketball is a permanent after thought to football (and sometimes even baseball here). Going on a 5 minute diatribe about thank you notes or team travel plans isn't gonna fly at a place that wants to be in the final four every year.

I don't even think it's that. Nobody cares about that when he's winning.

But Maryland made a Sweet 16 last year, and this is the fast rebuild era. They don't want to hear about the long journey up the mountain or whatever. I also think they'd be more tolerant if they were just kinda bad, but they're absolutely terrible.

But I said way back when the rumors first started coming out that this felt like a bad fit.

IMO buzz jumped to get what he thought was another 3-6 year extension on his HC career. I thought, for him, it was a good call. He was going to suck ass here this year if he stayed and might have gotten canned. Maryland's so bad it might play out the same way

Buzz threw some of his staff under the bus when NCAA enforcement came calling. People were let go and had to start over somewhere else. My heart pumps piss for him.

Quote:

He also allowed some non-coaching staff members to participate in on-court activities and, according to the NCAA, did not "promote an atmosphere of compliance because of his personal involvement in the violations -- and because he did not monitor his staff's involvement in violations."

I was an extension of his paycheck, maybe not his HC career.

As crazy as it sounds IF (huge IF) he turns it around next year he might be looking to jump ship at the end of year 3 IF (huge IF) somebody would take him. I would think he would be looking at a football first school again.

If we were suffering 40 point beat downs on a nightly basis like Maryland is and after the way buzz flirted with Maryland, I don't think the ad would be too tolerant of him

Plus, Two blowout losses to the sips would go a long way towards pissing a lot of folks off

Not saying it's a sure thing but there's definitely be a chance and he'd be on an extremely short leash for the following season had he been retained

I can't see anyway they let him go after 1 year. And yes I know his team is terrible. There would have to be some off the court stuff going on for that to happen. It would be so expensive of a move for them.

Plus he has a top 5 recruiting class coming in, so they probably allow him to see if he can do anything with that increase in talent.

If this keeps going as bad as it is and they don't can Buzz, would the 5-star reconsider going to Maryland because it might damage his NBA chances?

He has a billionaire donor that wants to win. That never hurts in recruiting.

I keep seeing people mitigating this disaster of a season because Payne got hurt. Even if Payne had been completely healthy all season, in games where they played teams with a pulse they were mostly obliterated. Looking through their schedule I can find maybe 1 game where Payne might have been the difference between a win and a loss.

This is shaping up to be easily the worst season of Buzz' career, given the expectations and the setting, far worse than his first year at Va Tech.

I think most Maryland fans know this season would be bad with our without Payne. Its an excuse card you can still probably get away with playing in year 1 though.

No doubt they figured it wasn't going to be good, but the Payne injury is still being used by some of their fans and media. It's copium that is wearing off because things just keep getting worse.

Kenpom aside, I wonder if, in March, Terp fans are going to look back on this season the same way we looked back on Buzz' first season back in march of 2020. I remember being slightly encouraged at the end.

I also remember being horified by an early showing at that Florida tournament, so maybe that's where the Terps are now.

My point is that we got better and finished well enough to cover the stink of the beginning of that season. I don't see that happening with Maryland. They are terrible and will remain so.

I need somebody to write the book about that season. All these players left. We didn't play for a month. Long time Buzz assistant left. Maybe Jaxson Robinson can do it
