White knighting for the college degree of someone you've never met is a weird hill to die on.

Me? I want a championship. Let's go

College is for getting degrees, playing basketball is a side hustle. Whatever weird assortment of credits that Haggerty has at this point are likely worthless at this point, the system has enriched him personally but at the cost of making a farce of the primary mission of the institutions he's played at.

I'm a college professor, and I truly believe in the life changing power of education. Previously, I think we really could look at the athletes and say, "at least they walked away with a degree." Some of them changed their lives and the lives of their children by being able to leverage their degree and the aggie network. Now these kids walk away with a bag of cash that was likely spent by the time they run out of eligibility.

Imagine the insanity of being called out by a poster for thinking college athletes should get college degrees...

You get a degree to get a good job. He is getting 4 million bucks a year, sounds to me like he has a better job than you already.

He can go back to school and get the degree later

Maybe intentionally, or maybe incidentally, but the argument you cite is actually one I agree 100% with, but it's generally invoked in relation to the idea of kids dropping out of college to go get paid as professionals. I wholeheartedly support the right of people to profit off of their own skills if they are marketable. I'm sure SNHU could help Haggerty out when he hands over his 5 transcripts.

There are kind of two separate things going on in this conversation that should be better identified though.

1- Haggerty is doing what I would do if I was in the same situation. If some booster here is willing to pay you 4.2 million to play basketball you take it every dang day. I don't blame the kids for working within the existing system but at the same time why would any of us be ok with a system that encourages players to school hop?

And this leads into the next point

2 - The adults in the room have let the kids down by not setting up the system in a way that hasn't created the right conditions to let the kids get paid while also supporting their progress towards their degrees. Instead the system encourages kids to behave like Haggerty shopping themselves each year to the highest bidder.

To me it's insane that some of you on this forum can find a way to justify a system that encourages a kid to end up at 5 schools in 5 years. It's broken and needs to be fixed ASAP in my opinion.

I think a rule that allows one immediately eligible transfer per student athlete solves almost 90% of this and makes kids be more thoughtful about making a move. Or maybe let kids transfer as much as they want, but say that after the 1st transfer they are no longer eligible to play in the NCAA tourney for a year. So for example Haggerty could play during the regular season, but not in the post season. This would severely depress the market for mercenaries and place way more value on kids that stay at one school while they develop.

Can we get back to portal target discussions? Thread has gone off the rails.

NIL/transfer system is what it is. If your'e gonna play the game you better learn to play it right or you'll get dusted.

I hope it changes because I don't see how it's sustainable but doing your best to win now is the right answer imo.

Is Haggerty better off making prob 8 million bucks off his college career (making contacts at 4-5 schools) or... Making 3-4 million (because he has less leverage) and having a maybe a more cohesive batch of credits (with contacts at 2 schools)?

I guarantee Haggerty has no regrets he plays under the current system. That's what I would pick.

No one batted an eye when other exceptional college students did stuff to maximize their income, right now... Hell kids are allowed to major in things like dance... Nobody cares that they can.

"College athletes" are now paid mercenaries and there's no going back. Attending college should be optional at this point. If they want to focus on getting better at basketball 247 (you know, their career, potentially), they should be able to opt to do that too.

Sup, professor.
Why are you bleeding out on the transfer portal thread.

I'm tryin to see who the next mercenary is here.
Thanks.

Lots of peoples' opinions on mercenary players have been changed suddenly

I'll never back down on my opinion on mercenaries. 5 schools in 5 years is asinine and a guy like that can't be good for team chemistry. I'm sure he's a great scorer, but that also means a high usage rate that takes away from the balance we all loved last year as well. K-State paid big to grab Haggerty last year and then their team disintegrated and their coach ended up fired. We can rejoice at the scoring numbers and beating out LSU, but this comes with some red flags as well that are fair to discuss.

If we've got 4.2 million dollars, I'd rather use that to reward the guys that are already here and build for the future with high school recruiting.

I understand that Michigan just won with 5 transfers, but some things are more important than winning, and at least pretending like these kids are college students that might one day get a degree is one of those important things.

You are working off an outdated way of viewing college sports, and especially college basketball.
Until they change the rules, you are going to see a lot of teams losing a chunk of their current players to the portal and having to recruit new players at the same time.

I also have gone from viewing players that transfer more than once as a negative, to just how it is. If their currenty school cant pay them what another school is, its not dumb for them to take the money.
He can always go back to school somewhere and get a degree if he needs it, meantime he is making MILLIONS of dollars more going to a new school.

Problem is the best freshmen are 1 & done and not cheap. And if they have a good freshman year and return, they're going to need to be paid millions to stay for the sophomore year rather than transfer. Lol

Haggerty isn't making 4.2 to come here. LSU reports were 3.5 and it sounds like he took less here as its closer to home and Buckys instant success.

Texas A&M Men's Basketball Transfer Portal Update Massive Addition as Activity Picks Up (April 12)
Portal window opened April 7 and things have accelerated in the last 48-72 hours. No major surprises on the outgoing side beyond what was already reported, but the Aggies just landed one of the biggest names available in the entire transfer portal. Bucky McMillan and staff are moving fast and the program is clearly positioning for a big jump in Year 2.

Blockbuster Incoming Commit
Texas A&M has landed Kansas State All-American guard PJ Haggerty. The 6-3 scoring machine averaged 23.4 PPG this past season and is widely regarded as one of the top 5 players in the portal. Beat writers (TexAgs, ********, Aggies Wire, The Eagle) are calling this a home-run addition that instantly upgrades the offense and gives McMillan a proven high-volume scorer. Haggerty announced it himself and the Aggies fanbase is fired up.

Departures Update
Ruben Dominguez (6'6 sophomore wing/guard) has officially committed to Xavier after entering the portal. He started 27 games last year, averaged 10.2 PPG and shot 40% from three a solid piece but one the staff evidently felt comfortable moving on from with the new additions coming in. Josh Holloway and Pop Isaacs remain in the portal with no new destination announced.

Core returners like Mackenzie Mgbako are still locked in from all reports; no fresh exits there.

Other Names A&M Has Contacted
Jimmie Williams (Duquesne transfer, 6-5 junior) Averaged 15.1 PPG; A&M has been in contact along with a long list of other schools.
Tyshawn Archie (McNeese transfer guard) Fresh contact reported today by Aggies Wire.
Toledo transfer guard Also noted as being in discussions.

These are early "in contact" notes typical of the first week of the portal. Nothing committed yet on these fronts, but they fit the size/versatility profile McMillan has emphasized.

Overall Outlook
The Haggerty commitment is the clear headline and gives A&M instant credibility in the portal this cycle. The program is still hunting length and rim protection while building guard depth. Beat writers have live trackers running and more movement is expected in the coming days as visits and offers ramp up.

I have it on good authority that we're willing to pay $100k over their best other offer, just to ensure money's not an issue and to prove we're committed to championships.

And by good authority, i mean total fabricated bullsh*t.
But if you say it with enough conviction, somebody will believe it, and the rumor mill will take a life of its own.

Saw a tweet from Luke tweet saying we are in on Moustapha Thiam from Cincy and I would LOVE that. A true 7 ft rim protector that can rebound and has decent offensive skills as well. Really really hope we find a way to pull that off!

Luke has shot down several reports of A&M being in contact or in the running for different players. He said it's common for some agents to just lie and throw different schools in there to pump up the appearance of demand.

If we assume that Mgbako, Hill, Vinson, McDermott, Green, and Shelby all return(I'm aware this is a big assumption) in addition to Clemence and Haggerty already announcing they'll be here next year and with our two incoming freshmen Mundey and Irving, that would leave us with roster spots for 5 more transfers/Euro pros, I believe. Here's what I believe our needs are: a true C, a SG, a backup PG, and two wings.
Here's a rough depth chart if Bucky wants to go 10-12 guys deep in his rotation:
PG: Haggerty/Transfer
SG: Transfer/Hill/Mundey
SF: Transfer/Transfer
PF: Mgbako/Clemence
C: Transfer/Vinson/Irving
Practice players: Green, Shelby, McDermott
Thoughts?
