The Ags have reeled in another silent commit. Another arm

I expect to see a few pitching decommits with all the pitching we are getting.

'Struggle' is a bit of an understatement, but super early in his career so who knows

Highly regarded prospect that likely only made it to campus because of TJ his Sr year of HS.

Supposed to have good "stuff" but had trouble locating it. He got shelled in his last 2 outings giving up 7 ER each against Georgia and Florida. He did well vs us 2IP 1H 1BB 0R including getting GG and Sorrell out (walked Haco).

He fits the profile we appear to be chasing of guys with really good stuff. This pitching staff is going to really test the new coaching staff. Big improvement in stuff but very inconsistent track records.

An write up from MLB.com on his performance at the draft combine last year…
Quote:

Paz rated as the top high school pitching prospect in Texas before he had Tommy John surgery last summer. The LSU recruit looked good when he returned to the mound in a bullpen for scouts on May 29 and his heavy sinker kicked up a couple of notches to 93-95 mph on Wednesday. He also threw three 83-86 mph sliders, including one with the highest non-Barr spin rate (2,952 rpm) and a trio of 87-mph changeups.

As far as Freshcorn right now, his ceiling is projected as a pick somewhere in the 120s.

That's similar to where Sdao was before his leverage year where he decided he wanted to come back for one more year. With the new eligibility rules, Freshcorn now has another leverage year.

I'm not assuming he comes back in this case, but the chances of him returning 1 more year are greater than what they first were.

Freshcorn is one guy I could see making a big step change up with better coaching. I hope that's with the Aggies but if not, then the pros. It seems he gets nearly all his velocity with his upper body. I'll bet a year from now he's no longer pitching with that off balance follow through.

Yes, appears he was a late cut from our side. Awful timing for a kid that really wanted to be here and I hope he finds somewhere quickly. And to be clear, I hate the game not the player (ME in this case).

As you would expect, Premium is being 100% rational and level-headed about this. (Actually most are but what I can only assume is a family member is rage-posting ).

I go to the Premium board to see what Brauny/Richard Zane post. And then head here for the more level headed comments

Well, sucks for the kid, feel for him, But, Mike is paid to win, and if he and his staff, believe that it was a necessary move.. I'm in.. and it shows that Mike is making tough decisions and not coaching on feels alone.

If they felt this was necessary then he shouldn't have been offered in the first place. We're going to have many pitchers next year and some will contribute little. If he ended up being one of those, the impact to the team would be negligible. It would have been more understandable to surplus someone on the staff that has already demonstrated marginal ability.

It lends credence to some of the stuff going around about Kelly.

It's unfortunate but it's a business now. The man is being paid to win and he needs to put together the best roster he can. Fortunately, the kid should have a littany of choices to sign with, especially if he's an SEC caliber arm.

Maybe he just doesn't want to be in competition with that many arms. Or with the change in pitching coaches, maybe he doesn't align with our needs.

It doesn't sound like it from his post or the report that his relative is ranting about it on premium.

It's the portal / transfers, not that he isn't good enough out of high school. I think this kid is legit; he throws harder as a 17 yr old than most all of our roster last year. Alas, there are still only so many spots...

Regarding timing -- tomorrow is summer move-in date so yeah it does really suck. Again, hate the game not the player. None of the people yelling mad are going to give HC a pass next year if the pitching doesn't improve.

Hate the timing, but over-recruiting and cutting/letting loose players is part of the game. You get players to commit at 14-16, and development isn't linear. Some guys rocket up draft boards and some plateau. Especially in the transfer portal era with limited roster spots, it's hard to take too many freshmen unless you think they can be a role player in year 1 and starter in year 2. I don't know the specifics on this kid's story, but I'm not surprised it happened to a few players.

Look it sucks for the kid, but I ain't going to be mad at Coach Earley about this… Earley is coaching for his job the next two years, and he has to win now. If him Barry, Cain and Pennington thought this was the right decision.. you have to respect it. And appreciate that they did the hard thing and not the easy thing
Joe Deertay

Kelly knew he was going to be gone… so he did nothing but basically call pitches last year

Agreed. And people seem to be forgetting that these kids can be drafted and never enter college no matter what commitment they made.

You have to imagine a new position coach did a full evaluation on all the pitchers in the roster as well as the recruiting class. And then he had some hard decisions to make based on what he saw.

That would be what I imagine.
