For the wormhole, I always saw it as a subtle nod to 2001. The movie has the monolith around Jupiter, but the novel and screenplay had it around Saturn. Jupiter just ended up being easier to create and film.

Who needs a nod to anything? Just put it on the dark side of the moon. Or in Oakland.

Because Interstellar is an homage to 2001 in some important ways. Besides, what's the distortion surrounding a wormhole like?

Great movie. Lots to think about.

Regarding wormhole location, wouldn't Uranus make more sense?

Two years, most of it slept away, just seems like a waste. Put that wormhole behind the moon so we notice it, and can also reach it in 6 days or so.

Watched with captions. Second viewing was so much better.

I'm sorry, but I can't read 14 pages on this. I've got a question:

If humans were dying and eventually would die off,, how did they "build" the wormhole, etc to get MM off of earth to get to the black hole to tell his daughter how to get off earth?

From Edmunds/Brand's colony. Those are the humans that got smart and came back through time.

ah! Ok...brand would have gone even if MM didn't, right? And she probably would have gone to that colony first if mm hadn't gone with her. But I still don't think that explains the "ghost" (I.e. Mm) making contact with his daughter even before he left.

No wait!!! The smart humans created the worm hole...how did brand, or anyone else for that matter, get to that planet to make the smart humans if the humans created the worm hole?

queso1, it's the time travel paradox. Future humans creating the wormhole is the same situation as Cooper sending himself to NASA.

I think "future humans" were referenced as the creators to avoid religious context, and because aliens would feel like a cop-out

I didn't realize there was a name for it. Thanks.

I guess it's one of those things you just have "accept" it and move on.

So I'm not wrong when I assume the robots were indeed shaped like a monolith as a nod to 2001? Thought it a very odd design for a robot, but thought they were awesome by movies end.

I watched it again last night. I really liked it the first time in the theater, but enjoyed it more this time around. I think I was better prepared to listen to what they were talking about during many scenes, especially the black hole/tesseract scene. Plus, I had hell understanding dialogue in the theater. I could understand them a little better when watching it last night.

Seems weird but this movie is actually better each time I watch it.

Can't wait to watch this again. Been wanting to watch it again ever since I saw it in IMAX but never got around to going again. Will be buying the bluray this week.

I gotta say... all the extras on the Bluray are outstanding. Love it when they go in-depth about the science in addition to the story.

The ship exterior scenes were a nod to 2001 also. The movements had a fluid stop-motion feel to them.

So I bought the BR and have watched it twice thus far, and unlike my one theatrical viewing (when I stepped out of the theater the first thing I saw in the lobby barroom was a TV playing a Texas Aggie can of whoop ass on Auburn, which took over all my thoughts for the next several hours and kept me from doing any thinking about the movie).

So now that I have watched the movie multiple times, I noticed something that I did not see discussed anywhere in this thread. When Cooper is hurtling through the black hole, he encounters the Endeavor at some point. That encounter would have been what, 2 years after he left Earth? Brand clearly saw Cooper, so it wasn't a dream. Is time running back and forth in the black hole/ wormhole? If he really does see the Endeavor so soon after leaving Earth, then why does he not arrive back at Saturn in that timeframe rather than when his daughter is dying an old grandmother?

I absolutely loved this movie. It is the best pure science fiction movie I have seen (and I have seen both 2001 and Contact).Got the score this week and listen while I work almost non-stop.

Doyle referred to the wormhole as "their space" or something similar, meaning outside the time dimension. Therefore Cooper and the past Endurance were not both necessarily existing at the same "time".

I watched this movie for the first time last night.... Great movie, but made me feel dumb....

Also I'm starting to get tired of Nolan movies... Don't end without a good conclusion!!! Inception, the last batman, interstellar!!

Great movie but need to watch it again. I was several glasses of wine along when I started it. Missed alot of the dialogue like others. Absolutely loved the robots.

The only thing that really bothered me was MM's complete disregard of his son. Also, it seems like MM has suddenly aged a lot. Did the role as the aids guy take that much toll on his physical features? He just doesn't look the same.

Inception the whole point of the ending is to make you think one way or another. He is literally performing inception on the audience. What did you not like about batman? And interstellar might be my favorite movie of all time. What specifically did you not like about it? It was bittersweet that he missed his whole family growing up.

The only quibble I have with Nolan is that I think Inception and Shutter island are almost the exact same movie.

If I had to get super-specific and take a wild guess, I'd say...

2017 = Nolan summer blockbuster based on an original script/idea of his
2019 = Smaller budget drama (maybe Howard Hughes?)
2021 = First Bond movie with the new Bond

Is Dunkirk an original script/idea of his? If so, you're 1/1 so far!

Ha, yes. I'll take it. I'll hold to my 2019 guess as well, but that Bond prediction will probably have to move back a couple years at least.

So this was on FX over the weekend and I stopped on it Saturday night mid way through the film. Right at the point they were stepping out of the Ranger onto the water planet. That being one of the most action packed scenes, along with the discussion of time relativity just after and finally MM watching the decades of messages had me hooked. As a dad to three kids (2 girls), the father daughter emotional struggle pulled me in. I finished the movie with a sort of WTF feeling to the end but then since it was being shown immediately again, watched the beginning up to the point I had previously started. Gives you a different view watching the beginning for the first time already having seen the end. Overall, a good movie that had kept this non sci-fi fan entertained and emotionally invested in despite all the minor flaws.

Didn't really care for this film at first. Now I watch it all the time.
