Also, in preparation for this week, I rewatched the first Mission: Impossible (for the first time in a couple of decades) and Fallout (for at least the 10th time since 2018), and something I noticed is that there's a strong hint at the end of the first movie that Kittridge (Henry Czerny) and Max (Vanessa Redgrave) go on to work out a deal for her to possibly serve as some kind of CIA liaison/informant. Considering the White Widow (Vanessa Kirby) is Max's daughter in Fallout, and Kittridge is back in Dead Reckoning, I'm wondering if that's the connection - through the White Widow's now deceased mother. Especially considering that the White Widow is working with the CIA by the end of Fallout (and was, in fact, all along).

Anyway, just thought I'd point that out, and recommend rewatching both movies in the lead up to Dead Reckoning. I had mostly forgotten what the Kittrdige/Hunt dynamic was in the first movie, while it's also crazy to see how reminiscent Kirby's performance is of Redgrave's. They not only share certain looks/facial expressions, they're both clearly turned on at times by Hunt's bravado. It's such a cool little link between movies. It was also good just to get a refresher on exactly where certain relationships/plot points were left at the end of Fallout.

What was that hint? Haven't seen 1 in a while.

It appears as if Kittridge is about to arrest Max on the train, and she says she's going to need a lawyer, implying that she has a case because of how crazy and off the books the whole ordeal has been. Kittridge then says maybe there's no need to involve the lawyers at all, and implies that they can work out some kind of relationship or deal. It's a super quick exchange, but one I thought could ultimately carry over to this movie, if his connection is to the White Widow (in addition to the government/Hunt).

I don't get it. I think Gervais would've been great in the role also.

Pretty sure he has opinions other people don't like so now he must be persona non grata. I agree he would have been good there as well

Caught an advanced showing this afternoon. Really enjoyed this flick. My 12 year old liked it as well. Hope Tom keeps pumping these things out.

You think *Ricky Gervais* could have played a field agent opposite *Tom Cruise* in the Mission: Impossible movies? The short, pudgy comedian? I'll concede that he could have potentially pulled off Pegg's role in M:I3, where he was basically wise-cracking behind a desk the entire time. But IMO, there's way he could have pulled off the field agent role Pegg then evolved to. Especially considering that Pegg brings a level of charm and empathy to that role Gervais could have never pulled off (and I'm saying this as someone who likes Gervais).

I guess I'm not seeing where his casting would've been an "iceberg" that would've sunk the whole franchise. Seems dramatic.

After Life has shown him to be a pretty solid actor.

I disagree. THE emotional connection of the past three movies has been centered around this specific, four-man team that has evolved and grown closer across each installment. Ethan has grown so attached to Benji and Luthor, in particular, that the movies have now become about how he'll protect/save them at all costs, even if that means things like losing the plutonium in the last movie. You switch out Gervais for Pegg, and there's just no way I buy that emotional connection near as much.

For instance, I can't even imagine Gervais in a scene like this...

I could absolutely see Gervais in that scene. Have you seen After Life? That show moved me to tears several times.

That said, given the jokes Gervais has made about Tom Cruise and Scientology, that does seem pretty funny now, in retrospect.

ok everyone- I'll be seeing the 7pm show tonight!
Is there going to be a 'Spoilers Included' thread so we can discuss the details for those that have seen it?

Also - has anyone seen updated projections for how much $$ this will make opening week?
Surprisingly, there are still seats available for tonight - and Friday night when I will see it again with my other son who is out of town now.

Was hoping for a HUGE opening but not sure it's going to happen...

I haven't watched it yet, but I doubt it. Jeremy Jahns is good about avoiding spoilers, especially if the movie hasn't released.

Ok.. just got home - headed to the spoiler page for specific thoughts but y'all get out there and see it soon before someone spoils the few big surprises

Overall.. I would say Fallout was better but only because it's not done yet.. I anticipate 8 will compete with Fallout for best of them all.. lots of loose ends need to be tied up

What tha…. How it this movie not over performing!!??

#MissionImpossible banked $16.6M on FRI on day 3 doubling its THU gross. FRI-SUN opening wknd #boxoffice on track for about $55M putting cume thru SUN at around $79M. Last MI pic opened to $61.2M

M:I2 had the highest opening five-day for the franchise at $78.5M. If $79M holds for this one, it obviously becomes #1. The three-day looks to be about $54, whereas Fallout's franchise best was $61.5M, though it obviously opened on a Friday and not a Wednesday. All-in-all, despite falling short of projections (which have been off all year, for nearly every blockbuster), Dead Reckoning is still performing near the top of franchise. Fallout went on to make a franchise best $791M worldwide, and considering the super solid international numbers for DR so far, it could eventually come close to that. We shall see..,

Coming in below projections has nothing to do with expectations though. That's what the industry experts were projecting it to make, not fan expectations.

As for my own expectations though, obviously I never expected another Maverick, but I did think it had an outside shot at finally hitting the $1B for the first time with this franchise. I was hoping the goodwill from Maverick would end up boosting it enough to get there.

Clearly not gonna happen, but that was admittedly pretty optimistic.

If I had to guess I think it settles right around the $700M mark if it really legs out.
