Also... they gave like a 15 minutes presentation of Mission Impossible and OH MY GOD! They showed a bunch of footage, but about 10 minutes of it was a "making of" on how they did this INSANE stunt of Tom Cruise literally driving a motorcycle off a f'ing cliff. I can't wait!!!

so is this pretty much just Tom Cruise pushing these things because he wants to do the whole worldwide press tour and try and get more theaters back to full capacity?

because I gotta say, we saw from SpiderMan that people will turn out to watch good movies that they're excited about. i honestly think Top Gun Maverick would have killed at damn near any point in 2021. i think the same for MI:7, though he now want some distance between it and TG?

mostly, i'm just pissed because i'm ready to see these damn movies

It sounds like it's more about the press tours/filming than it is about waiting for theaters to get back to full capacity. Under the old dates, Cruise was going to have to do a giant, world-wide press tour in May, and then another in August/September. And since M:I 8 will likely be filming during both of those releases, that was going to be an issue. Also, M:I 8 was never going to make 2023 anyway. So there would have been big Cruise/Paramount blockbusters in May and September of this year - only four months apart - and then another one at some point way down the line in 2024. Whereas this new plan admittedly feels cleaner, with a big Cruise/Paramount blockbuster each of the next three summers now. It sucks that we have to keep waiting, but I do at least see and agree with the strategy behind it.

Paramount sounds like a mess, and Cruise is just an absolute force of nature.

The stories I've heard about Top Gun: Maverick, and Cruise demanding money to reshoot parts of it - because he didn't like his hair or whatever - are just incredible, and in the same vein. He knows he has the studio over the barrel, that they basically have to do whatever he says, and, for the most part, to his credit, he's almost always right.

for these movies - he will be right and they know it! Spend that $$$ - reap the rewards.

does the insistence on a 3-month theatrical run annoy anybody else?

streaming services have been around long enough that the movie industry should have figured out a way for shorter theatrical releases and even day and date releases to appropriately compensate everybody.

it reminds me of the way blockbuster stuck its head in the sand and stuck with brick and mortar instead of adapting.
