But his ability to sneak away with the kid wasn't changed by the mask. I agree that this bothered me also.

Perhaps it's because he needed to eat the kid and his grief to fully look like Claude?

In the video it seemed that his eyes were still sunken in and he hadn't taken 100% of his form. The dad said his eyes were off also.

When he was terry after he murdered that kid in the van, he 100% looked like Terry.

Yeah... I guess he made himself seen as Terry after killing the kid mostly, but several people saw him driving the van before he picked the kid up.

Good point. Maybe he's more desperate now due to the investigation?

He did say several times that he was very hungry, maybe it was getting impatient and wanted to go ahead and snatch the kid and thought its appearance would draw too much attention in a crowd so it put on the mask. But that seems like an overly complicated plan when it could have just snatched up a kid that wasn't in the middle of the only crowded place for miles around.

Yeah I couldn't quite tell from the video still, but it seemed like there was something off about his appearance still. The kid's dad/grandfather seemed disturbed when he looked at him with the mask off. So maybe he wasn't quite fully transformed yet.

I'm gonna stick it out til the end, but I feel like the show's gone downhill a little after the first couple episodes. It's still good, but ten episodes seems like a lot.

This is a show seemingly at war with itself. Every new episode contains moments that feel raw and transcendent, and yet there's also so many moments of tedium and repetition. This latest episode isn't much different. It has many inspired moments, and the climax feels meaningful in terms of shifting this story into high gear for the end of the season. And yet, there's still too much filler here, too much detracting from what should be a show that's constantly keeping us on edge.

Ultimately i don't think this show should have been 10 episodes but I'm far too pot committed to give up now.

Because it's 3 hours worth of book stretched out into 10.

It's a show loosely based on the novel at this point. The book was 2/3rds done before we even had the Terry Maitland doppelganger reveal -- it's why since that point in the show we've had so much repetition and long, drawn-out shots... Writers were having to expand King's material on their own.

If that the case they should have just made it 5 or 6 hours long. Why compromise the quality just to stretch it out and sell more episodes?

If I had to guess, HBO optioned it for production and said they needed it to run in the prime Sunday night slot until March 7th... I don't think it's a coincidence it wraps up Sunday March 7th and WestWorld S3 premieres Sunday March 14th.

Basically the show was given the money it needed for competent production and acting -- which is why it feels high quality... This isn't a cheap production and while it's certainly not A-list actors, it's a solid cast that has done a fine job with the material.

But they tried to stretch this thing out too much and didn't pace it well enough. Either it needed to be shorter, or we needed to have a slower build up to the Terry Maitland doppelganger reveal. TCTTS knows more about how things work, but that might explain why the most notable actor (Bateman) had his two episodes of acting/directing and then was out -- that may have been all the time he had for the project so having this thing run 4-5 episodes before the doppelganger reveal wasn't an option.

The good news? The final episode or two should kick us back into the main story so it could have the story quality of the first two episodes.

The bad news? It's a Stephen King novel (not a novella). You want a good ending AND a good screen adaptation? Good luck.

HBO is typically pretty flexible with episode orders. I don't think they ever require that a season be X amount of episodes. For instance, Watchmen was originally meant to be ten episodes, but it was Lindelof who decided to cut it down to nine pretty far along in the process and HBO basically said yeah, great, whatever. That, and True Detective premiered on the exact same January date in 2014 (the 12th) and was only eight episodes. Westworld is likely starting on March 15 *because* of The Outsider. In other words, I think the length is on the creators. They said they needed ten and HBO probably gave them whatever they wanted. Also, yeah, I'm pretty sure Bateman's schedule had a lot to do with him only being around for two episodes. Season three of Ozark premieres next month and he no doubt had to go straight into that. Either way, I'm definitely in agreement that the series should have been shorter. Eight episodes would have been perfect.

What is the relationship between Jack and the monster? When jack got scratched I initially assumed that the monster would turn into him and start murdering. But that obviously isn't the case. Why isn't the monster turning into jack after jack was scratched? Why is jack's relationship with the monster different than the other scratch victims?
Humorous Username

If I've been following the show correctly, I believe the monster uses two humans at every stop: one to impersonate, and the other to help him while he transforms into its next impersonation. Jack is the "helper" that will eventually kill himself or get killed to end whatever pain the monster leaves him with so as to not leave a witness.

Who was the helper early on in the show when Jason Bateman was impersonated? And how long does a helper remain a helper?
M.C. Swag
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I think the helper is something the entity can do, but not something he necessarily MUST do every time. Also, as far as we know, Jack wasn't actually scratched.

So far in the series we've only seen 2 helpers (jack and the man who committed suicide by cop).

Both this and McMillions are feeling a bit like a penalty kill at this point. Still enjoying overall and still watching, but both definitely seem stretched time-wise well beyond what the story needed to be told well, to the detriment of the story.

I think maybe this show is taking it's dramatic pauses too seriously and it's a little stretched, but I don't mind it. McMillions is WAY too stretched. It feels like a student trying to hit a wordcount when their first draft is only halfway there.

I'm on episode 4 and agree it's really taking its time, but I'm liking the vibe and the development. I read the book a few years ago and I think it's following it pretty closely.

They should get some bad ass editor to cut this into 6 hour version which would keep all the great stuff and cut out the unnecessary stuff.

They could also turn McMillions into a 90 minute documentary and it would be better.

Agreed. McMillions is a good story but watching some overweight smoking chick in a miniskirt tell stories about how guys wanted her is not interesting. Stick to the facts and make it shorter.

So what was the purpose of the flashback to the bear cave?

Is that to show that el Cuco is definitely there Bc of the immense grief felt by them being trapped there?

I think it just explains why El Cuco is drawn to that town. But who knows, maybe it's foreshadowing how they'll kill it (trapping it in a cave and starving it to death like all those townsfolk did).

I'm not sure how i feel about how this monster is just given new abilities every episode.

It started out as just a shape shifter. Then it gets mind control. And now, it inexplicably can read the minds of the people it scratches?
BallerStaf2003
How long do you want to ignore this user?

It was always able to control minds and know what they're doing.

It had the black guy deliver the two twins to it and then kill himself when he had no use for him.

There's a difference tho. The "helper" is the mind control.

But until this most recent episode, we never had any indication that El Cuco could access the mind of the person it scratched.
