Howdy kids, here we go.

Four Brackets - named four most prevalent composers in this tournament (I think?) - Williams, Shore, Zimmer, Horner. First round will run roughly 48 hours to around this time on Friday. I suspect we will have some upsets based solely on the seeding. Enjoy!

Group Round Stats for my Fellow Super Nerds

The cutoff ended up being 16.7%. The hard luck #65 was The Last Jedi at 16.2%, followed closely by Poltergeist at 16%, Blade Runner 2049 (15.6%), and Avengers Infinity War (15.4%)

Distribution of percentages:

>70% - 2

60%-69.9% - 4

50%-59.9% - 8

40%-49.9%- 9

30%-39.9% - 15

20%-29.9% - 16

10%-19.9% - 23

0.1-9.9% - 25

0% - 6

Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter each went 3-for-3 in getting all of their franchise entries into the Round of 64 that were nominated in the Group round. Superman was 2-for2.

No other franchises were that successful - SW was 7/10; Batman was 2/3; Bladerunner was 1/2. Pirates of the Caribbean was 2/3; Star Trek was 1/3; Avengers was 1/2. 007 took the 0-fer

Just 8 votes in and only 2 entries have 100% of the vote. Crazy days ahead.

I feel like that music with its swelling emotion, but impending doom, fits nicely with Glory's first round match-up.

Jaws vs. Glory

Farewell and adieu, to you fair Spanish ladies.

BTW, did anyone else's mobile browser crash & burn when trying to load this page? The deluge of YouTube links crashed every time I tried on both my phone and iPad. Had to crank up the desktop to place a vote.

Not surprised at all. I voted for a lot of the lower seeds, especially in two of the four brackets.

Muck, now that the preparation round robin rounds of ~108 have closed, I'm realizing we never saw Rocky show up. I thought it was nominated. I know I put in 3 tracks for Rocky II, as it is one of my favorites.

Did The Italian Stallion fall victim to the numbers game of getting the brackets to work and commissioner's discretion as to who got booted? Not seeing Bill Conti's masterwork on our list feels like, well...

Nobody nominated Rocky.

Rocky II's signature track which is known by millions and one of the ones you listed is "Gonna Fly Now" which is rife with lyrics and vocals, which disqualified it by the contest rules.

When I got to its group, I spent some time listening to the rest of the soundtrack and made the decision that without Gonna Fly Now, it didn't stand much of a chance of competing at the group level, so I eliminated it and replaced it with Crimson Tide.

Now just 1 left at 100% and man is it a weird one.

I understand. No complaints here, and thanks for all your hard work to create this fun tournament.

I did consider the lyrics as a potential problem, and should have found one of the versions that did not include the "gonna fly now" chorus singers. Guess I figured it was more like the choir chanting in Duel of the Fates or similar songs where people consider it 90% instrumental, while the voices maybe become part of the melody. Maybe I'm also just blinded by my love of Rocky music, as the score during the training montages and actual fights have been on my playlist since I first started buying cassette tapes.
Fat Bib Fortuna

I definitely considered that for Duel of the Fates as well, but felt since it's in a foreign language that nobody knows or speaks, and there's no one alive other than Spilner who can actually tell you what the lyrics even are, that it made a difference.

I ran into some definite grey area and just went with my gut. I love Gonna Fly Now, in fact a guy I worked with at my first job in the athletic department at Rice University is one of the kids running with Rocky on the streets of Philadelphia in Rocky II. It was a tough call, but I felt it was too much of a song to qualify.

Your first job was with Rice's athletic dept? While I can't quite say I worked in the department, I can proudly say the first job anyone other than my parents paid me for doing was selling chairbacks and programs at Rice home games one year in the 90's. Did pretty darn well when A&M was the visiting team, though in hindsight I'm surprised nobody got mad at me for wearing Aggie gear and waving my towel while selling for Rice Stadium.

I need to meet that kid who got to run with Rocky. So many questions...

My 2nd real job was working for Rice's athletic department as a graduate intern in the 1996-1997 academic year, which was there first year in the WAC. I could write a small book on my experiences there that ranged from the hilarious to the pathetic to the amazing, highlighted by

the Rockets' Matt Maloney coming to a game to see his alma mater (Penn) play Rice in basketball and getting booed when they called his name over the PA system (because he sucked).

Being at a game where Fresno State men's basketball was point shaving (upon further review)

Getting to hang out with longtime Astros PA announcer J Fred Duckett, who did PA for Rice as well and would say almost anything you wanted him to except for swear words.

Going with the Rice Volleyball team to Las Vegas for the WAC Tournament, and getting to stay 5 days at the MGM Grand for free.

Watching Lance Berkman destroy a baseball for an entire season - 41 HR in 59 games.

A splendid job for a 22 year old Muck

Now that is one heck of a first job out of college. My Matt Maloney memory was that he had one decent year for us as a backup point guard in the era of the dreaded pinstripe and snarling rocket logo uniform, then they inexplicably gave him like a 7 year contract for $17 million which turned into him getting cut after one season.

My first job was actually being the sports editor of a very tiny NE Texas newspaper that I hated worse than anything. I made it 3 weeks before I abruptly quit in the middle of a Monday morning and took a 3-week road trip, burning through 99% of my money in the process. Great decisions of a 22 year old.

Who wants to tell me what the highest vote getter is so far? One guess per person please.

Three double-digit seeds in the lead so far

Do you guys agree the voting window should be 48 hours for these first 2 rounds? Cuz I'm already bored.
