With tomorrow's release upon us I figured it was time to spin this off into its own thread.

As for my own viewing, I think I'm going to split mine over two nights, probably Thursday and Friday.

I've rewatched both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition in the past couple of weeks, along with Wonder Woman just prior to WW84. Feeling primed and ready to go.

I don't think anyone expected great reviews for this, much less a review *this* glowing, from Variety, no less. I mean, this is insanely high praise...

Quote:

It takes an extraordinarily diverse skill set to direct a great comic-book movie. You've got to be a visual-effects wizard; a maestro of story and pace; a popcorn humanist who can find the relatable dimension of a bunch of freaks in capes and breastplates and spandex; and enough of an artist to tie the whole thing together into an indelible Big Vision. It's no wonder that in the years since Hollywood got eaten alive by comic-book culture, the superhero movies that have achieved a genuine sweeping transcendence can just about be counted on one hand: "The Dark Knight," "Spider-Man 2," "Black Panther," a few others.

To that hallowed list I would now add "Zack Snyder's Justice League," the thrillingly restored four-hour-long director's-cut version of the 2017 DC Comics extravaganza. The new movie - and make no mistake, it really is a new movie - is more than a vindication of Snyder's original vision. It's a grand, nimble, and immersive entertainment, a team-of-heroes origin story that, at heart, is classically conventional, yet it's now told with such an intoxicating childlike sincerity and ominous fairy-tale wonder that it takes you back to what comic books, at their best, have always sought to do: make you feel like you're seeing gods at play on Earth.

I think I'm more excited about following this than watching the director's cut JL

I really liked BP, but not sure it needs to be in the "best of all time" super hero movies list, per say. I'd put Captain America: Winter Soldier in there, the Avengers (2012), Iron Man and Infinity War as well. Maybe GOTG and both MCU Spideys. The Dark Knight might be the best super hero movie ever. BP was definitely in my top 10 for the super hero and MCU list not doubt.

I was disappointed that the first JL was not very good. Had high hopes. Looking very forward to watching it this weekend once I get some time.

I'd put The Dark Knight one and Endgame two. I've seen Endgame probably five times since the theater and tear up Every. Single. Time. I love that movie so damn much.

Will be shocked if this cracks my top five, but am totally open to it...

Can't argue with that at all. End Game is up there for me too.

I think the first Guardians of the Galaxy deserves some recognition too

Not to derail but...

I went to see what my Top 10 was and wasn't too surprised. Some of those like IW and EG are tied score wise. GOTG2 and Batman Begins just missing the cut.

To keep this Justice League related, I found this pretty promising. These guys rated the original in the 40s and 50s and have scored the Snyder Cut in the high 70s and low 80s. That's a huge swing.

I'm glad to see some higher-than-anticipated praise for this iteration of the Justice League movie. I have cautious hopes that it can live up to the expectations I've put on it over the last few days.

Going along with the rankings... Batman Begins is a severely underrated CBM.

Btw, my vote is to just make this de facto spoiler thread starting tomorrow as well. Any general reactions can be posted in the DC thread. I figure this is a unique case, where we've already kind of seen the movie but not really, so no need to be super formal about spoilers and all that. Unless there are many objections...

Yeah I think everyone just had a bad taste in their mouth from Batman and Robin, and Nolan, although a good name at the time, wasn't the superstar he is now. People get tired of origin stories, so that knocks it down some.

On the list of most underrated CBM, Batman Begins is well below Man of Steel and Shazam imo.

I just hope the early high remarks are because it deserves it and not because the first cut was so bad.

Personally, I consistently see way more praise and love for MoS than BB.

Man of Steel gets better with each rewatch to me. There's still a few things that irk me, but that's going to happen with such a classic character.

Hans Zimmer's score was nothing short of epic and amazing. Shannon was great as Zod. Faora was bad ass. Crowe and Costner brought it in the fatherly acting department, even if Costner's lines were questionable.

Agreed. I liked it more on my recent rewatch. Same as you, I still think it has a couple glaring issues, but it's definitely aging well. And yes, the score is incredible.

Overall, I think MoS is probably superior visually and emotionally. But I still hold that BB is one of the most structurally and thematically sound superhero movies ever written. It's just a masterclass in blockbuster screenwriting.

I'll get a stupid question out of the way, is there any place to rent this tomorrow or is HBO the only way?

That is such a Superman quote to me. Man of Steel's writing was 1000000x better than BvS.

But a lot of people **** on it and the DCEU as a whole. You never see that for BB.
