finally got through it. it worked so much better than the theatrical release, but was still basically just a typical snyder flick to me. that is, some cool moments, some cringe moments, but basically just fine.

i'm curious though...what was snyder's original plan? i know about his daughter (awful story), but did he really think WB was going to release a 4hr cut of this film in theaters?

if he'd gotten someone in to help with the writing and the story a bit, i think it actually could've been pretty good if broken up and released as two, 100-110 minute movies.
I imagine it would have been a 2.5 hour movie. The editing process for this cut basically seemed to be "did we film it? Its going in!"

Can someone give me a quick synopsis of the Superman black suit thing, please? I haven't read the comics recently enough to know about that.

IIRC, it helped absorb more yellow sun rays which helped him recover from dying more quickly.

  • Superman showing back up and Steppenwolf's fate was just way cooler and if they added the John Williams score to that it would have been the best lol.

I am a long-time nut of John Williams' scores, and rank Superman: The Movie as among his very best work. I did miss the nods to his score that Danny Elfman placed in the original release score, but Tom ?? did a fine job of working in Hans Zimmer's Superman theme, especially in this cut:

My son and I watched the whole thing this past weekend and both loved it and didn't think it seemed like 4 hours. I did miss a few things from the original:

  • A few funny lines/scenes (Pet Semetary especially, Aquaman talking truth while lassoed, Flash jumping up after landing on WW)
  • I like the music when Flash is running and slowing things down in the original better
  • I still prefer Superman in his red and blue suit but I understand why he had the black suit from the comic storyline
  • I liked the twinge of John Williams music when he showed up in the original

All that said, we both agreed this version was MUCH better and we don't ever want to watch the original one again. Things we noticed that we really loved:

  • The increased violence was awesome lol
  • Beginning WW scene was more awesome.
  • More Flash (saving who was Iris I assume? and then the ending sequence which just was really cool)
  • More of Cyborg actually IN ACTION. I thought he was just an afterthought in the original but not here.
  • How Lois ended up reuniting with Superman vs. the original where Bruce had her brought as a secret weapon.
  • The part where Clark is walking through his ship and it was playing quotes and Man of Steel themes was great.
  • The last battle actually seemed like the whole battle was ALL of them working together as a Justice League vs. the original where it seemed like it was one or two of them at a time doing something.
  • I thought Batman's Batmobile sequence was so much cooler in this one and then him getting on that big gun on the cliff.
  • Flash's ending (worth mentioning again)
  • Having Darkseid in it made it better as well as foreshadowing.
  • Superman showing back up and Steppenwolf's fate was just way cooler and if they added the John Williams score to that it would have been the best lol.
  • Joker appearance

I really wondered how this cut would be and didn't have high hopes at all so it exceeded my expectations by a mile and I hope this prompts Hollywood to let Snyder finish what he wants to do now. I read an article about the supposed plots for his 5 film "trilogy" and it sounded amazing and now that I've seen this I'd really like to see that happen. I doubt it will but one can hope!

Can't really argue any of this. There also was a twinge of Danny Elfman's Batman score included in his original score for Justice League that was missing in this much improved version of Justice League.

I've watched this one 4 times and have truly enjoyed it. This was the movie that I wanted back in 2017.

During the Death of Superman storyline in the early 90's Superman dies from fighting Doomsday. When he returns he is wearing a black suit.

This is just a nod to that story.

oh, another obvious takeaway....so much cyborg in this version.

i'm not saying fisher is right or justified in any of his explanations or reasoning, but i can definitely see how he'd be like "wtf?" after seeing the theatrical release

I figured I wouldn't like this movie much. I've never seen any of the DC movies before this one. However, I REALLY liked it. Now I want to go back and see all the movies I've missed.

I'm certainly not trying to judge, in fact I'm pretty envious that you've had a minimum of 16 free hours in the last week to watch movies.

Well, there is only so much I can do toward landing my next employment ... so when I'm not doing something to that goal, I spend time working around the house or with my hobbies, tending to family stuff, and getting to watch movies. But often I watch something like JL while doing these other tasks.

I'm on my second go round since my wife wanted to watch it as episodes, but I've gone back and watched a few scenes (like The Flash at the end) multiple times. If it wasn't for her I would probably be on my third watch.

Can't believe I'm about to link a Shapiro vid.

A friend sent this to me, and I've never agreed with Shapiro this hard on anything. Like, even down to the details.

I've always hated the look of Whedon's Avengers movies, especially the first one. It looks like a tv soap. I honestly wonder if they even bothered hiring a cinematographer.

The benefit the Snydercut has is that we have evidence that this could have been a much worse movie. It's hard to miss how much better it is than the 2017 movie. I can't say that makes it an enjoyable movie for me though. Cool parts here and there, but the length of it is punishing with characters I was not invested in. I like Batman and Wonder Woman fine enough and Cyborg and Flash's storyline were serviceable enough. I don't think their character designs looked that good, but that's just a personal preference. I also didn't feel that Steppenwolf or Darkseid posed that big of a threat. I think my biggest problem is that we are meant to like these characters on familiarity or just because we are told they are heroes. One moment from Whedon I wished they left in was the "Just save one" person. Overall, didn't hate it, but wish I enjoyed it more. Don't think I will be rewatching.

There was a point about halfway through the movie that Cyborg was pretty much responsible for everything they had done and the rest of the JL were kind of just along for the ride.

Cyborg having significantly less screentime in the original release may have contributed to it being horrible. I haven't watched it since it's original release, but I remember not being able to follow along very well.

Watched it today. Much better than the original I will say.

The ending annoyed me with the Flash as well, but mainly because:
1. Flash says he can't do it much longer
2. Cyborg gets knocked down but then flies back up to the boxes
3. And then WW, Aqua, and Superman fight for what feels like 5 minutes. WTF is Cyborg doing that entire time? I kept screaming at the TV "Say one!!! Idiot!!!!" It took WAY too long and then Flash gets hit and by that point I was annoyed as hell.

Flash running in the last sequence looked pretty bad to me, like he was obviously just acting like he was running slow. Like on a sitcom where someone like Michael Scott is being dramatic and pretending to run slow. It just looked really off to me.

Overall I liked it though. However at the end credit scenes I found myself not really caring about anything it was attempting to set up. In other words it didn't really spark any interest in the DC Universe for me.

You missed the end credit scene??? Where Flash has inadvertently created the multiverse and they bring back Clooney's Batman? And then show how he got his Batnipples, from Mr. Freeze's titty twisters?

Dude, go back and check it out. So worth it. You have to watch all four hours again to unlock it, though. But an option will come up as the credits start that asks "Uninvert Nipple?" Choose "Yes" and you'll be able to see it.

Finished my second watch last night and everything I liked and disliked still rang true for me.

Going to rewatch BvS with the new aspect ratio, then watch the ZSJL Justice is Grey edition for my 3rd watch through. This is the black and white edition of JL that went live this past Tuesday.

They tag line is something about how now you can download it, it's odd.
