i cannot wait for this movie. It is one of humanities' most interesting stories anyway, and to have it treated with the talent and budget this looks to have received is exciting.
i mean, think about it... thinking up quantum physics and realizing that you can dig up some ore, spin it pure, smash it together or compress it, and magically blow up a whole city?
and if you have miscalculated neutron reactions badly, or your understanding of the atom (which you have never seen yet and your understanding is mostly theoretical) is seriously flawed, possibly react the entire atmosphere and destroy the world?
combine that with a race against the nazis, maybe japanese, and with soviet spies everywhere?
should be awesome. might even go to the theater for this one.
I've said this elsewhere, but I *highly* encourage people listen to Last Podcast on the Left's currently ongoing series about this whole situation. (Note - despite their name, it is
not presented as a left-leaning podcast, I have not heard them delve into current politics at all).
The Manhattan Project itself is already super fascinating, but everything surrounding atomic research with WWII is equally if not more fascinating. It's really interesting hearing about how Nazi Germany had a huge headstart on the research but was massively beat to the punch by the American effort. Japan apparently identified it as a crucial element to the war, but decided to focus their resources elsewhere given their lack of access to the materials required. Russia, despite being an ally, was viewed as the next big threat by those in charge, so Russian spies were definitely a problem (and Oppenheimer himself had strong ties to communism, their podcast goes into depth about the US intelligence efforts into that as well). Leslie Groves (Matt Damon's character) was a complete badass who got **** done.
I was already very excited about this movie. Listening to the backstory and all the story surrounding, I am even more excited to see it. I'm
very curious to see if they delve into anything outside of what the Manhattan Project did.
